Widescreen DS refresh on the way?
Nintendo might be cranking out new DS Lite colors left and right, but IGN says something bigger's brewing in Kyoto -- a third iteration of the DS with dual touchscreen displays, one of them widescreen. Those are pretty significant changes, so we'd actually say that sounds more like a second-gen DS rather than another rev of the current hardware, but IGN says the rumored release date of April or May 2009 doesn't jive with a whole new unit. We'll see when we see -- hopefully we won't be waiting long.
PS.- That's just IGN's mockup, don't get too excited.

@phanbuoy-GREATEST SHOW EVERRR!
Good God. Does The Big N understand how to make money without rereleasing the same hardware over and over again?
Give me a break. Lame fake render. And no reason for dual touchscreens IMHO.. would just make it heavier and more expensive. The hinge wouldn't tolerate you banging on the top screen for long. Just makes zero sense.
I would rater have a longer battery life, browser that supports flash and an updatable OS
Ever have one of them depressing thoughts when you realize everything you want is so far away?
I want a PSP+DS+iPhone+Android device... lol
I want it to be more power centric like the PSP with downloads in mind (I know the iPhone is beefier, I'm talking in relation to DS).
I want it to be touch screen and sleek. Meaning its comfortable to hold, durable, has a touch screen, and still has buttons along with dual analogues.
I want it to have apps and browse the web up to iPhone's standards (Firefox mobile or Chrome), but not be locked down.
I want it to run Android as I see it as the future OS for phones.
If only Sony could design a touch screen PSP that isnt too big for your pocket that came with at least 8GB of flash memory. Work a deal with Google to have Android on it but with the right to change the interface to XMB style.
you coulda said
I want it to be:
1)
2)
3)
... just sayin
ur right
1) Andoid OS + XMB interface
2) Flash memory + Bluetooth + GPS + 3G + wifi + 3MP cam
3) Touch screen + buttons + analogues
4) iPhone size range, maybe have the buttons slide from the side like the Dream has for QWERTY
Want in one hand shit in the other, see which fills up first.
heres a quick photoshop i threw together with what google images could find me.

it would also need a home button which I forgot and the shoulder buttons would be on the other side on top of the part that slides down. When not slid open these buttons would also function the camera for the phone.
that is the ugliest thing i've ever seen! bad ign!
Uglier than Betty?
I'm thinking the next handheld released by Nintendo will be something that should fight piracy a bit harder, whether it's through firmware like the PSP is doing, or some other method, but they've got to do something.
how about a widescreen lower touchscreen with the ability to show a full qwerty for web duties
call it the ninbook DS
If Nintendo used 2 Nvidia's AXP 2500 and SLI'ed them them with VGA res with dual touchscreen that would definitely be something to talk about. That would definitely be a dream DS with VOIP capability... I guess I can keep on dreaming.
This would be nice to have if it had internet browser that actually worked better than on the PSP, but I'm happy with my DA Lite because I still play GBA games. But that's just my opinion.
The PSP is how to NOT design a portable game unit. The DS is. If people want all of those features then look at the Pandora unit coming out this month. It fits about all new possible features listed here.
Nintendo is a game company First 2nd and Third. Like 3M is basically a 2D company. They dont vary from there major strength. If it had a feature that can do something beyond a game... Thats nice. But not a major items..
A DS with better wifi security would be very nice.
Naw, the new iPod Touch has to be way better.
"That's just IGN's mockup, don't get too excited."
Actually it's not IGN's mock up it's mine, they asked to use it. :p
philnolan3d.com
That's a bitchin' DS.
How about WEP support...
No.
As long as the DS continues to print money, and the PSP's only form of competition is brightening the screen, I really doubt nintendo will make a new unit.
As for the mockup and rumors, WHY would you want the top screen to be touch? There is no advantage for gameplay mechanics, and it would just lead to people breaking the hinge on their DS. Terrible idea.
That said, I really wish Nintendo would release a new DS, and then support it with some strong 1st party titles. As far as I see it the DS is where the GBA was at the end of it's lifespan. We've already seen the platforms best titles and it's mostly a home now for developers of shovelware, where they make the same generic games for every movie, tv show, or toy that comes out. The console lacks enough serious developers.
At least it's not like the PSP, where most of the great attempts are still mediocre. =/
Does it have to look like an Iphone?
the only thing I want on the DS is for both screens to display in 3d. WiFi, I don't really care for, and I'm not interested in bleeding edge graphics--especially on such a small device.
that thing iz freken ugly!!!!!!!
