Oppo joins the Blu-ray revolution with BDP S83 deck
Oppo, best known for its upconverting DVD players and universal decks, has apparently decided to join the BD camp with little to no fuss. The BDP S83 was spotted over at the company's CEDIA booth, and while no real details were provided ("it's loaded" is all we have to go on), we can't see any harm in having yet another alternative. Unless it's $350+, in which case we'll roll our eyes and stomp away with our arms crossed.

Whoa! Now we might be getting somewhere, if it also does SACD and DVD-A.
No love for the tipster?
It has logos for VRS technology (DVDO deinterlacing) as well as DVD-A and SACD!
This could be a DV-983H and then some!
With a planned release date of Winter 09, according to the HT Guys at the HDTV podcast.
Does "winter 09" mean Jan 09, or Jan 10?
I'll bet the price is close to $500 but that it outperforms most $1k+ players.
Think about it. Oppo DVD players are "cheap" but still three times the name brand budget players. But way better than many more expensive players.
I wouldn't say that Oppo players are cheap, they are actually pretty spendy, but I do believe they are worth every penny.
This will probably be the first or one of the first Blu-ray players that are actually worth owning. The Panasonic BD50 came close, but it isn't quite there.
Could care less about the SACD stuff, but DivX, etc, would be nice. MKV? Multi-region?
i wonder if will have region free playback on the dvd side of things along with pal to ntsc conversion and region free blu-ray
I already have a PS3, so it's a must for me that the next player I buy has at least region free Blu-ray playback and preferably region free DVD playback. I would be surprised if Oppo didn't offer that, so this Oppo may become my next dedicated player.
