Scientists get death threats over Large Hadron Collider
Really people, enough is enough. Death threats? Seriously? According to a fresh report from the Telegraph, gurus working on the mysterious Large Hadron Collider are receiving all sorts of strange messages, e-mails and faxes as the go-live date (this Wednesday, supposedly) draws ever closer. For those curious about why some folks are up in arms over this thing, we'll simply point you to this very informational rap video; for those opposed to nerdy hip-hop, let's just say its primary goal is to "seek out new particles including the long-awaited Higgs boson responsible for making things weigh what they do and the possible source of gravity called dark matter." Somehow or another, the paranoid among us think that carrying out those tasks will rip the world wide open or leave you stuck in 1990 with nothing in your CD player but Ice Ice Baby. Okay, so maybe that last scenario is worth getting worked up about.

If this "machine" (THE most advanced piece of technology ever created by mankind) were not the total brainchild of European scientists, and if it were located, say, in Oklahoma instead of on the French/Swiss border, Americans would be thrilled. They'd be waving Old Glory faster than usual, praising their own success more preposterously than usual, and chanting "USA, USA" louder than usual. Unfortunately, the whole thing is 100% European. The US has nothing to do with it (been too busy wiring trillions of $ to private contractors in Iraq). And so US citizens are "afraid". They were also afraid of the Concorde ("sonic boom could create a shockwave which would destroy buildings", they claimed), of vaccination, of interracial marriages, &c... ; the list sadly is endless.
Well, dear US citizens, shove this one up deep and dry where the sun don't shine. And please, don't pollute our serenity with your noises while the World is marching on.
People, if you want to make statements about this machine ending the word.
Back it up, calculate it.
If you cant than shut the hell up.
Dont judge or certainly do not take action against what you dont fully understand.
of course... that frightening scenario is only possible if you OWNED a cd of ice-ice-baby...
Any coincidence that the date would be September 11th????? Hmm.
Sweet. Now we can create another universe. This is great. Everyone is RIGHT!! Creeationists have a point, and scientists have it spot on!
So, what the hell is the fuss all about?
Given that we've had the same fear with nuclear weapons a few decades ago, and going all the way back to alchemical fears...I guess, we should just fire it up!
Now, as for the religious angle - I firmly believe that if anything, it proves that God's creation is simply beautiful.
richie,
I makes no sense to compare different situations from different times. Splitting the atom and smashing protons together are different things and have different concerns.
I personally am very terrified of what might happen on Wednesday. I don't see any reason why we need to do any of these experiments. What is the use of knowing whether dark matter exists or how the world was a split second after the big bang? There is a whole world full of meaning, culture and civilization waiting for us to discover but instead most people aren't interested in life but prefer to focus on the things that have mo real value.
There are so many things that need to be fixed in this world and I am disgusted with the scientists who ignore reality and like kids, just want to blow things up and see what happens just because they can and the politicians who knowingly allow harm if there is a chance in the end to profit. But this time it is too risky. Even if the odds were 1 in a hundred billion that anything bad will happen it is still too risky
I see no reason to be interested in space or inter-dimensional travel or string theories or whatever. I live on a beautiful planet that I love and that loves me and don't want to risk do anything that will harm it.
what is it about our society now that seems to want to believe that we are all about to die.Have our lives become so meaningless that if we aren't worrying about the end of the world somehow, that we cant justify our existence. I blame the internet for all the hysteria, before this, the few crackpots that were out there used to huddle in corners whispering, or standing on street corners with a piece of cut out cardboard strapped to them with the words "The end is neigh" written on it. Now they get hold of a PC and shout for all the world to hear, and people listen because they cant see the nutter who spreads these rumours. The 10th will come and go without incident, by friday everybody will have forgotten about it, then by saturday we can all go back to youtube and scare ourself with some other rubbish, like planet x where we are all going to die in 2012, and if that doesn't get us, then we are all going to be enslaved by the powers that be because in reality they are all lizard people. It would be funny if there wasn't a lot of very scared people out there. Does anybody really think that if there was any real danger to these experiments, not one of the scientists of the two and a half thousand plus that work on this project, all or most i would suspect with family's of their own, they would want to protect, wouldn't have become a whistle blower by now. Of course they would. To us mere mortals, this is black magic and like all ages through the centuries, things that people don't understand they fear and invent the " what i'f's " that causes people to fear the worse made up scenario's of the end of the world... In some ways we haven't evolved past our cave man instincts, see a shooting star or a comet and its the end of the world. here is something to be concerned about though with these experiments, something that people should have gone loopy over, and that's the cost, what with growing poverty, health service failing to pieces, life saving medicine being withdrawn because governments cant afford to give them to patience and so on. Their answer to all that was to spend 19 billion on a big magnet to watch particles go whoosh.. That is the real crime in all of this.
There we go again ..scientist s with ambition ..
remind me again what Sc&%$ has created all these weapons of mass destruction ..
Ahh yes ...nobel prize winning scientist with ambitions ..
Ambition is an evil self centered force ...totally endorsed and promoted by our society
They all agree there is a slightest chance it will turn bad ...so if they all agree dont do it ...research 1st what the outcome will be don't just play god and assume ..
Science as we know it : gravity, speed of light , etc etc etc
All just lies ..they dont know squad and if you just stop a second to blindly follow the idiots in white coats you could See this too
all you have to do is look back in history
Theories get put forward scientist agree and a decade or so further its proven all these theories are BS nothing but :::THEORIES
Are you all that stupid ....
Just listening to the BS from the source:
QUOTE
John Huth, who works on the collider's ATLAS experiment, called such fears "baloney" in a recent interview, and noted that in normal physics, even if the black hole were stable, it could just pass through the Earth without being detected or without interacting at all
QUOTE
and then he goes on one paragraph further and contradicts himself in the next paragraph
QUOTE
You're talking about such incredible power inside both the accelerator and detectors that you never really know until you turn it all on what's going to happen," he said.
QUOTE
doppeldenk ...What the &%$#...
You all cannot see this ..??
So what is going to happen with this experiment ?? Same as always It might go well it might not ......just now they might blow up the world instead of just them self in their basements ..
You people blindly following the scientist is a joke ...
Just one more thought ...why do u think they are experimenting ..
for the good of mankind ...LOL I don't think so ...
It will be for weapons or energy which they will use to enslave us all longer ..
You really are all that blind ...
learned nothing ?? Blind following of the elite to your own destructing and enslavement .
How can u even trust scientist that are so dumb ...making comparisons with this to C`finding`America
when anyone with a shred of brain knows this was another very old lie and is beeing taught in school ever since
We all should know America was long known to the powers before they send Columbus over there
THERE is ample proof of this if you care to read ...
so iam ment to elive and trust scientist that make a comparison to an ancient lie ..
QUOTE
"When Columbus sails west, he thought he was going to find something. He didn't find what he thought he was going to find, but he did find something interesting," said Lykken, who works on the Compact Muon Solenoid, one of six experiments inside the collider complex.
QUOTE
I pity mankind for it stupidity as a whole

Gosh, it's just a big atom smasher, and the possibility of something dangerous to happen is too small for that something to happen ;) If it would have been real risk, scientists would inform us, or take measures against it, or, after all, never would have thought of taking this idea to reality. So stop worrying, listen to common sense and do not let this rumor by fools take over your mind.

Man's technology has exceeded his grasp. - 'The World is not Enough'
Zealous Nobel Prize hungry Physicists are racing each other and stopping at nothing to try to find the supposed 'Higgs Boson'(aka God) Particle, among others, and are risking nothing less than the annihilation of the Earth and all Life in endless experiments hoping to prove a theory when urgent tangible problems face the planet. The European Organization for Nuclear Research(CERN) new Large Hadron Collider(LHC) is the world's most powerful atom smasher that will soon be firing subatomic particles at each other at nearly the speed of light to create Miniature Big Bangs producing Micro Black Holes, Strangelets and other potentially cataclysmic phenomena.
Particle physicists have run out of ideas and are at a dead end forcing them to take reckless chances with more and more powerful and costly machines to create new and never-seen-before, unstable and unknown matter while Astrophysicists, on the other hand, are advancing science and knowledge on a daily basis making new discoveries in these same areas by observing the universe, not experimenting with it and with your life.
The LHC is a dangerous gamble as CERN physicist Alvaro De Rújula in the BBC LHC documentary, 'The Six Billion Dollar Experiment', incredibly admits quote, "Will we find the Higgs particle at the LHC? That, of course, is the question. And the answer is, science is what we do when we don't know what we're doing." And CERN spokesmodel Brian Cox follows with this stunning quote, "the LHC is certainly, by far, the biggest jump into the unknown."
The CERN-LHC website Mainpage itself states: "There are many theories as to what will result from these collisions,..." Again, this is because they truly don't know what's going to happen. They are experimenting with forces they don't understand to obtain results they can't comprehend. If you think like most people do that 'They must know what they're doing' you could not be more wrong. Some people think similarly about medical Dr.s but consider this by way of comparison and example from JAMA: "A recent Institute of Medicine report quoted rates estimating that medical errors kill between 44,000 and 98,000 people a year in US hospitals." The second part of the CERN quote reads "...but what's for sure is that a brave new world of physics will emerge from the new accelerator,..." A molecularly changed or Black Hole consumed Lifeless World? The end of the quote reads "...as knowledge in particle physics goes on to describe the workings of the Universe." These experiments to date have so far produced infinitely more questions than answers but there isn't a particle physicist alive who wouldn't gladly trade his life to glimpse the "God particle", and sacrifice the rest of us with him. Reason and common sense will tell you that the risks far outweigh any potential(as CERN physicists themselves say) benefits.
This quote from National Geographic exactly sums this "science" up: "That's the essence of experimental particle physics: You smash stuff together and see what other stuff comes out."
Find out more about that "stuff" below;

Well wednesday came and went like i said it would, and we are all still here. I think what this has done is shown us that it is time for places like you tube and the like to be forced to have cencorship other than the usual illegal stuff, Only the other day i watched a fancy animation on you tube showing them switching this thing on and the earth then being swallowed up in a black hole. why do these people make these things, i can tell you why, to scare people so much it is damaging. Perhaps you think i go too far with what i am saying here, freedom of speech and all that. There is freedom of speech yes, but trying to scare people is something entirely different. There are reports now of a young girl out in india who was so terrified of being ripped to peices by this fictional black hole and the end of the world scenario, that she actually killed herself out of fear of having to face the wednesday switch on. This makes me sick to my stomack that people have been allowed to blow this danger out of all propotion, mostly just for kicks, and the media for trying to get the biggest headlines. this young girl payed the price with her life.
it is time that there was some cencorship on the internet, there is more damaging things than looking at a naked body that this society is so hung up about, but still allows the young to be exposed to phycological damaging you tube vids made by the frindge lunatic paraniod. I know a lot of people where scared out of their minds about this switch on, i run a forum and ive spent all week calming peoples fears, so i do know. my heart goes out to the family of this young girl who lost her life for no reason other than people scare mongering. I only wish more people was exposed to the interview of that brilliant man Stephen Hawkins, who has said in an interview with the BBC that the LHC does not have the power to create a black hole that will destroy anything, That what the LHC are doing is creating an experiment which happens a million times a day in the earths atmosphere, even more powerful than what the LHC can create and nothing bad happens. The media have focused on the words BIG BANG to sell more news paper or get more viewers, in reality, this isnt the big bang, this is after the bang, not the actualy bang itself. All this fear, and a loss of a young life, and all for nothing.
Turning this thing on is insanity! These egge heads don't have a ounce of common sense. Bunch of idiots.
