Steve Jobs just announced that the iPod classic will only come in a single $249 120GB config from now on. Seriously, that's the only model of classic available now, storage junkies -- better snap up those outgoing 160GB models while you can.
This is lame. Making fewer choices when you could just as easily make more choices is insipid. Make the 80GB, the 120GB and the 160GB available. I prefer the choice and dislike being given no choice at all. Typical Apple, they go good with one hand then do poorly with the other hand.
I totally get that and I'd love to have as many choices as possible but as far as the bottom line goes and staying profitable, it's not really in their interest to continue with so many product lines with so many options if they're seeing that one line isn't as popular as the others. I'm sure there's people that would love a 160Gb or 320Gb iPod or even bigger capacity, but right now they are in the minority.
Maybe Apple is looking at the bottom line and if the 160Gb model wasn't selling as much as the smaller capacity ones, they decided to discontinue it and just bump up the the remaining Classic model to 120Gb. I'm thinking they're heading toward completely replacing the Classic line with the Touch at some point. Apple's never been known to keep all their product lines, only the ones that remain profitable and popular. And the "lossless" junkies out there ... well, I think they might just be in the minority as far as iPod sales go.
