Do you really wanna buy songs over-the-air? And is syncing over Wi-Fi faster than USB? The iPod Touch is also a great web browser... I don't see how Wi-Fi on a Nano sized device is any good.
I CANNOT believe nobody has mentioned the recorder thing! It cuts out all of the third party devices and opens up the education market in a massive way! Sansa doesn't have a one up anymore....
Like the colors. Don't care about the form factor, just looks like a skinnier 2g (which means people with a 2g nano have a good upgrade path). Feature wise it's pretty much the same as the Zune.
Apple should have made a ITouch Nano if they wanted to make waves. Pretty much a yawner of a product roll out. I hope their next event has cooler stuff with their notebooks.
Gonna stick with my 3g Nano and hope they make a better IPhone or a Touch Nano..
This is such an improvement over the fat 3G Nano. I own the 1G and 2G Nano, with my primary use being the gym. People need to realize that the #1 use for the Nano is exercising, so you can't do a touch screen, and the fat form factor is dumb.
fat?... for heaven sake the 3g just a bit fat that a credit card. But this new model is largest = a burden. While the battery is a improvement but the big and vertical screen is just a useless feature.
I'm going to be a bad Mac/iPod fan here and say that this presentation was just Meh. It's sad to say, but the Zune 80 now kicks the iPod Classics butt in terms of features. And the Nano is looking a bit meek too.
I'm shocked - seriously shocked! - that they didn't give their entire line-up wifi, despite Mr. Jobs saying wifi is the future of iPods. Also, take a note from Zune and start handing out (at least some) of those feature for free. It's just a software update to get "Genius" on year-old Nanos and Classics.
To be fair, the capacity update and new Genius feature is nice.
I won one these from Mac/Life magazine. I think I'm opting for the orange. I usually would go for silver or black, but the new colors seem to pop nicely.
I pass. Apple pitches this thing as the active iPod and yet it is got an odd (non-ergonomic) shape for "active" use, on top of that, you need an attachment for Nike + and another attachment if you want to use bluetooth, so my question is: what is that "thiner iPod yet" claim worth for? I ain't a stupid fanboy Apple...next time give me some substance if you want my business.
Wow some of you guys on this sites are f@ggs. "Oooh its too thin! I hate the curves, make me sick! It looks ridiculous!" Same thing said about the 'fatty'-people bought it. Same sh!t said about 4gNano-people bought it. "iPhone wont sell"- sold millions. Dont have a clue at all. Year of the Zune! Are you off your heads?????! Ive never even seen anybody with one! Oh thats right.. are they still only available in the U.S while they try build up some sort of demand that amounts to more than a few hundred Ballmer c0ck sucking losers?!
I think they came out here in Canada too. I think I saw one in a Best Buy when everyone was crowding around the iPod Touch. Anyways, I haven't seen anyone carrying one, and I know of nobody who has one. Microsoft has a ton of work to do to even get a sliver of Apple's marketshare. It seems that all they have done is chip away at the other manufacturers.
I know its a 4th Generation product, but really though, the tittle is really bothersome. Stop naming crappy things with the next iteration (G) symbol next to it. It just seems like a really cheap gimmick, "OMFG Jurrasic Park 3G!!1! " besides isn't real 4G something entirely different. By the way, design wise, seems like they got lazy or dumb. what happened to the wider "nano" that comfortably fit in the palm of the hand...? Did sales suffer due to an unfamiliar i-format
The Zen X-FI is a full £10 cheaper has better sound quality has an actual SDHC for an extra 16GB has better screen and has better video support. The only real reason somebody would want one of these is because they own music for itunes.
I must admit you are right. While the form factor of the ipod NANO 3g is way better in comparison with the zune but this new nano is just "mimicking" the zune form factor. It's just annoying, clearly not for jocks and runners.
accelerometer ?. believe me, you don't want it, this can be funny to show to your colleagues the first day but nothing else much.
"Sorry people, whether you are a fan or not, this year is a Zune year. Apple killed them selves with this overhyped event all for 2 or three news!!"
hahaha hmmm, I think Ive heard that it's been the Zune year for like three years. I gave my Zune back because it was pretty much bullshit n I'd have to say I'm very happy for the iPod I traded it for. Playing games that are pretty much PSP quality like Spore kinda blows the Zune out of the water...
Hmm... I must admit, I'm a partial Apple fanboy.. But, this nano is a bit tall for my liking, and curved edges? They sort of feel like one of the knockoffs. It's like Apple made a knockoff of a knockoff. However, the new interface does look really good. I reckon the prizes for the interface (including accelerometer) go to Apple and the external design goes to the new Zune that everyone's talking about.
Also, I forgot to add, I will probably get the new nano as the zunes aren't available in Australia :( And the Apple cachet sort of makes it just that little bit more wanted
No. What you don't realise is that the Zune hasn't been released anywhere but in the United States and Canada. Meanwhile, the iPod is everywhere and what's more, it's popular everywhere. Everywhere you go in the world, people listen to iPods. The Zune may have made a bit of an impact in its home market, but worldwide it has a lot to do. How long did it take for the Zune to make a dent in iPod sales in America? Has it even really made a dent yet? Well it still has to do all of that again worldwide...
Some of you really make me laugh. You go on and on about the fatty 3g, and now when its not fat you guys are still complaining... Lol you guys contradict too much.
Just me? They aren't making things thinner! They're just rounding off the edges and making it appear thinner. I'm tired of this "innovation". Plus, wtf is up with them charging for every living thing. I'm getting tired of Apple.
To me, it's practically a software update with a couple of design differences. I like the 3rd carnation of the nano. But, the new Zunes are way better. I believe it's around the same price but double the capacity and tons of features.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Wi-Fi? Really?
Do you really wanna buy songs over-the-air? And is syncing over Wi-Fi faster than USB? The iPod Touch is also a great web browser... I don't see how Wi-Fi on a Nano sized device is any good.
Browsing on the ipod touch? really?
Browsing on the ipod touch is slower than a computer isnt it?
Amazingly , the answer to these questions answer your silly questions as well.
One word of caution: while the top casing is curved, the underlying LCD screen is flat.... hence there is an air pocket created between these layers.
I predict that there will be complaints of dust getting under the screen in the next few weeks....
You know, I think you might have a point there, let's just hope that Apple thought of that before :D
I CANNOT believe nobody has mentioned the recorder thing! It cuts out all of the third party devices and opens up the education market in a massive way! Sansa doesn't have a one up anymore....

Am I the only one who can't see what the hell is going on, on those screens? The glare from those is insane, bad design tbh.
I think the best part of this update has to be Apple ditching that horrible shiny back and returning of the all aluminum casing.
I'm going to be a bad Mac/iPod fan here and say that this presentation was just Meh. It's sad to say, but the Zune 80 now kicks the iPod Classics butt in terms of features. And the Nano is looking a bit meek too.

How does the "shake to change song" feature work when you're running?
You can turn it off in the settings, also when LOCK i on, shaking it does nothing.
wow I hated the "fat" nano when it came out, but this is even worse! Also, what's with the black clickwheel on the silver?
The first Nano design I want, 16gb for all my music, thin and small. Sold.
surely with a curved screen you're gonna get reflections ruining the view at whatever angle?
Meh.
I won one these from Mac/Life magazine. I think I'm opting for the orange. I usually would go for silver or black, but the new colors seem to pop nicely.
This is totally a copy of Meizu's M6 :-)
The only thing I own that has a curved screen is an ancient crt monitor.
I don't think the 4g Nano is going to change this.
Err, the nano design looks exactly like KDDI:au + Sanyo's collab. design by Naoto Fukusawa for their INFOBAR 2 phone. What a rip off.

I dont think its that bad. I'm more for the ipod touch. But the colors are amazing. much better than they were in the past.
the orange color + no reason to own one makes me sad.

Wow, that's definitely one ugly looking iPod.

As a 2nd gen iPod Nano owner... it feels better in my hand than the fatty.
Not sure about sales of the fatty... but having 9 colors of the new Nano will assure lots of sales.
Wait... that looks just like a Zune. What's going on here?
Apple's playing catch up.
trying to get rid of their awful screen size but kept the horrible scroll wheel, bad news bears.
The Zen X-FI is a full £10 cheaper has better sound quality has an actual SDHC for an extra 16GB has better screen and has better video support. The only real reason somebody would want one of these is because they own music for itunes.
Prefer the square one.
Now you just need this... pathetic Apple fanboys!! Ew!!

No really, Seems like a chinese fake iPod
Admit it iPod fanbois, Zune is way better.
You can bash but please do a comparison. Feature by feature Zune beats iPos hands down!
ENGADGET PLEASE DO AN IPOD 4G VS ZUNE COMPARISON AND LETS SEE WHO WILL WIN!

one thing, you don't have to use itunes. works great with songbird
