iPod touch 2G - first hands-on

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
ATTN ENGADGET: pleeeease determine as soon as possible if it is possible to use the IPod Touch as a phone using VOIP.
Many, many people want to know. It's a slam dunk purchase in my case in what would otherwise be a shockingly hollow product release... if you can even call it that.
TIA
Check out mic'd cellphone headsets. They have three black stripes on them, one each for left and right channels, and a third for the microphone. If the touch has support for such a device, than if nothing else, jailbreaking it would add support for their headset-phones, and therefore VOIP.
If not, which I'm sure it probably doesn't, than no.
Find a new touch and take a flashlight do the inside of the headphone port, you'll have your answer.
Who wants a 2nd gen iTouch? I´m pretty sure all the iTouch fans want a 64GB version.
Me. I bought the 16 just now. I find 16 more than plenty, since I don't go lugging around entire albums where only 1 or two songs are good in it. The wifi, planner/scheduler, all those cool 3rd party apps, mp3, video, and possible VOIP (SUPER PLUS if it becomes possible!) just sold me.
I need something for quick notes, time management, and for a little entertainment. The iphone would've been my first choice, but 1) I hate pinned-on monthly expenses and 2) I use my bberry free of charge =].
On a different note, I am now downloading 2.1 for my 1G Touch...
Why no A2DP support? I was hoping to get a new Touch but I think my Moto Q9h will serve me better. And I can upgrade to 32GB microSD when they get to be $30 in six months or so. Without A2DP support I don't want this, I hate wires. Once Apple gets that support though, I'll definitely get one. People can say what they want, but I don't think any sync solution (or media/software store) is as easy to use as iTunes.
@Bill Jobs
I wouldn't sell.Quite frankly you have the better deal right now.But if ya did,I'm sure you could get it a little more for it since it's hacked.I've been seeing some in good condition go for at least 500 bones.
Does it still sound shite, like every iPod ever made?
Anyone that loves music, does not buy Ipod, everyone knows that.
I'm just really upset about the built in nike+ integration. I knew the software was coming, but why the hell would apple only put it on the Touch?? I would pay 50-60 dollars for a nike+ dongle that ran on wifi or bluetooth and connected to my iPhone. I have been looking forward to nike+ software for a while now and today was going to be a good day with that being announced. Such a disappointment.
I also wonder why that dongle that comes in the 30 dollar nike+iPod kit will not work with any iPod. I thought they all used the same pin connectors?
ive sucked steves dick and im still hungry.
your right put the headphones in your penis way better sound quality:)
bill gates gives great butt sex
I dont get it..
Apples keynote thing said the ipod touchs back is a mirror type..
except engadget has the iphone type..
Which is it?
Or do you get to choose which you want?
It is a mirror back, the ceiling is just dark. You can see the camera reflection and the lights.
Where is Flash support?
I really wish it has bluetooth too...I guess I'll stick with my G1 Nano+bluetooth sleeve...
Shelling 229 and rolling (think software updates) for this device aint worth it. Id rather go for the cowon s9 with a smaller screen and w/o wifi. The main advantage right for apple is the brand/fanbase as well as the extremely workable SDK. Why wont other company take notice? Or is it that difficult to play ball when apple's init?
Recessed headphone jack is a brilliant idea. I wont have to worry about breaking off the end anymore.
Strange no one mentioned how it's around 30% faster than the previous Touch (and the 3G iPhone).
And honestly, that same comment about what "should have been added to the first generation" is cliche since it's used whenever ANY product's successor is released. ( http://www.highspeedsat.com/auto-gps/nuvi.php ) In all electronics there will be a compromise, whether it be the cost to manufacture, size, battery life, or the time spent getting something to work and ship on on time.
Anything less than 32GB is too small, even 32GB is pressing the lower limits of acceptable storage...god damn flash memory craze.
And $399.99... SERIOUSLY?! Ugh...
I would love to have an iPod touch, but that's just a rip off.
I just ordered a Creative Zen X-Fi, 16 GB with SD card slot, and wi-fi (for music streaming only) for $185 from Amazon. It's got a "powerful" built-in speaker. X-Fi is the "final breakthrough" in realistic sound reproduction. Did I say expandable memory? Then I saw the news about the new ipods, panicked a little, but now I'm thinking, let's go with the Zen.
As mp3 players go, the iTouch is sexy, but, kinda, sorta, big and heavy. And all that glass :(
The Zen X-Fi seems like the way to go right now (it even has a 32GB version for about $250. Come on, for on the go surfing, get a laptop.
I've had the touch since Christmas and it is without bought the greatest of all my gadgets, especially since the apps store came on the scene (not that all the apps are worth downloading, there's a lot of crap, but the few goods ones are worth the wait). For £169 you simply can't beat the touch for entertainment value, never been bothered about the iPhone, £45 a month, I don't think so, I actually use my phone it would be trashed in a couple of months.
This NEW iPod touch 2Gen isn't really new, it's a 1.5 version. Still, personally I think if you haven’t got the touch and you have a bit of money saved up, you can't go wrong with this device. Playing about with a touch down PC World and drawing a positive/negative conclusion is what I did at first, then I got one and it all changed. I would rate the touch as my top gadget ever, even though it is essentially just a screen. I'm not loyal to manufactures if there's something better out there I’ll drop them like a stone, but there isn't anything better just a load of pretenders.
I somehow knew the only redeeming feature of the Lets Rock event was the 16GB Nano. I have a 16GB iTouch, it is a great device for surfing the web and watching movies, but it's still big in the pocket and the music control is somewhat cramped when you're walking on the street and you want to change the song or adjust the volume - touchscreens are easy if you're sitting somewhere, not if you're walking, running or standing on the tube/bus, when you need the faster physical buttons. That's why I use the iTouch on the train to/from home, and my w580i Walkman phone when on the move (with Bluetooth headphones, and it sounds way better than the iTouch!).
So, the physical volume buttons on the Touch are a welcome addition, but it will never be a "pocket friendly" device - and that is why it is not selling by the truckload.
Now I'm tempted to buy the 16GB Nano, because my w580i holds "only" 8GB on its M2, but I'm put off by the lack of FM, and that's why I'm eyeing the new Sony NW-S630, which has it for about the same price - and probably will sound much better.....
I don't known why some people claim to be pocket friendly = slim. While it's true for a clearly fat models but the real factor to be pocket friendly is the wide and height size.
I hoped so much... *sigh* ... never mind.
Better luck next time Apple, i will stick with my "old" gadget.
Nice addition - the speaker that is. Still would like to see a price drop ala the iphone :/
Can they make a Itouch with a Data Plan No cell phone service.
Why is being thin so exciting? wouldn't it having twice the battery life be better? how about about an SC card slot? or a microphone?
wow! i was going to buy an ipod touch for my birthday, but this one looks more sexier than the first one, so ill wait for this one, has anyone know if this its released yet??
WiFi, speaker, downloadable apps, and volume button-it finally caught up to my Palm TX...
pocket friendly = small................maybe. 2 gen Touch is smaller but still unpractical to carry around, methinks
I am so waiting for a 32/64GB Nano
The new 2g iPod Touch i have been told by these fix it guys on the web that when they took this thing apart they found a bluetooth chip 2.1....now i understand speculation that this is for the sole use of nike+ but rumours on the inside also suggest that 2.2 update will be out before the new year and will be a massive upgrade....some speculating that the upgrade could include bluetooth connectivity? who knows
Hey, does anyone actually give feedback to Apple itself? Bear in mind that, above all Apple is a business, the spoon feeding of updates is the way to keep the business running... Apple can't really focus on satisfying everyone, they do focus on providing a product with the highest quality possible within a philosophy of usability that, no other company seems to be capable of. For those bothered with the SS back, i'm sure Apple would provide a surgical steel back if the market was willing to pay for it, even titanium... Because not all of us can afford to wear Brioni tailored suits, they opted for the SS back :-)
Don't forget the massive possibilities offered by the free SDK and the excellent continuity of the software updates and the iTouch is a product to make a good spin for the money. As for those asking for 64GB of memory, better improve ur encoding skills/knowledge, that's loads of memory even for the purists requiring the best audio and video quality...
The iPod Touch actually have BT hardware built in, more specifically a Broadcom BCM4325 that is BT2.1 +EDR, whenever the software will support is incognito... For those questioning whenever it worth the money or not, the hardware worth every penny and considering the continuity of the software updates, there will be a lot of news for the Touch...
