this image kind of makes me want to try my windows task bar up top, does anyone else do that?
i just changed it lets see how it is for the day....
I have it at the top for Vista and keep it at the bottom for XP. Just seems like That's how Vista should be. :p
I tried that lots of times on XP, the taskbar on the top is much more "natural" and handy for me.
Only problem, most app don't give a fuck about where you place the bar and keep spawning windows starting from the top of the screen, so that their titlebar is hidden under the task bar.
After countless alt+space > "move" trips, I always end up givin' up and moving the bar back to the bottom. :/
You can avoid that setting the taskbar to autohide, but I don't like that setup.
I'll probably get raped for saying this but I have windows xp patched to look like apple osx using flyke osx. it looks great. sue me. So yeah, it's at the top..
Yup, been auto-hiding task bar at the top ever since they introduced the task bar. Seems weird on a new install to have it at the bottom.
i use ubuntu and its at the top and it works a hell of a lot better...i know its not the same os but same concept
Fading out neutral comments sucks. They're usually just as relevant, but not funny. Don't just change the comments; make them better!
You're talking about taking something from WinMo and applying to PC's. Think the other way around.....
The samsung omnia has a freakin OPTICAL MOUSE with A POINTER in WinMo 6.1.
That with WinMo 7.1, Zune client, and the HTC Touch HD
can't wait
I've always had the taskbar at the top. It's just more natural when it's close to all the other menus. I never understood why MS made it default at the bottom.
Amazing. As long as that screen is 3.3 inches+.
fail, i am looking at iPhone, the screen is like 1024x700 at least..
iPhone is 480x320
800x480 that's exactly 2.5 iphone screens side by side
WVGA's been done before, mostly PVPs like Cowon and Archos
as for smartphones the EXPERIA X1 has been advertising its screen for ages now, lets hope this one actually releases
I have to say that's a good looking phone. One of my favorite things about the iPhone is that it does have a nice screen, it's good for web browsing and general use. I like HTC's too, so this looks like a very nice phone!
Finally we are back to the HTC Falcon, except thinner, bluetooth, and WiFi. My god it took 6 years for them to get here. I knew they would be back, but I didn't think it would take this daanng long.
It's 4" based on the photo and specs ;)
@Drvec
It can't be 4" (115 x 62.8 x 12mm). Its pretty much the same size as the iPhone which is 3.5" (115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm) The spec looks nice except for the no flash. I've been using the flash from my other WinMo phone to pick up dog poop at daily night walk. Hopefully this is not one of those regional tri-band HTC been pushing out.
@ no_one fail, "i am looking at iPhone, the screen is like 1024x700 at least.."
LMAO man not even close. Try 480x320.
It is the same resolution of my first gen Eee PC 701, "verticalized." Incredible. Here's hoping Apple or some one else one-ups them on the next gens.
@HemanC
It doesnt have to be the same size of the iphone, as they have 2 different aspect ratios. HTC=16:9or10, Iphone=3:2 The HTC will inherently have a larger screen if the the dimensions of the body are the same, and the screen reaches the width of the body.
@rock99rock
Even though there is a possibity of what you said is true. Looking at the info we currently have, the screen doesn't look like it reaches the width of the body. No known phone I know of will reaches the width. Maybe for shock reason? I do hope this will come in true in the future. As I hate the border as well as the next person.
Who care about this closed source, POS device? My Nokia Internet tablet has 800x480 screen, and I had it for years! And BTW, it's been said before but bears repeating: THE IPHONE IS A POS, AND SO IS YOUR FACE!
When measured in photoshop with the leaked width of the device, the screen comes out as 2 inches wide and 3.3 inches tall, giving a screen size of 3.8 inches. Definitely bests the iPhone 3G, in the same size package, and thinner too.
a WVGA screen is certainly nice. but IMO, it doesn't matter if the hardware is utterly fantastic --- it's dead in the water if it runs Windows mobile.
@HEMANC:
borderless screens coming soon :)
http://www.i4u.com/article19215.html
LG making screens with no frame!
@HemanC
Actually, I reckon it will be about 3.8 inches as its wide vga, the iphone isn't a 16:9 screen
That looks like the phone I've been wanting for about 2 years now. Just hope it has plenty of memory, FM radio and if MS can sort a Zune client for WinMo, then I'm sold.
give that sucker windows mobile 7 and the rumored zune client and that will be a huge seller. that screen is just awesome.
I've been waiting for a Zune client for WM for forever. If they could pull this off, M$ and HTC would really have a killed device here. Though, wiating to put WM7 on here would be nice too.
http://htcsource.com
Unfortunately, HTC will probably screw it up by not including a 3.5" headphone jack. I have an HTC Mogul, and there's no way to listen to music on it, because the A2DP sound quality is so bad, and nothing works with the HTC's proprietary mini-USB + Audio port.
Well WinMo 7 should be just in time for it or maybe for a later edition.... I going to skip the X1 and get this baby.
The Modaco forum page on the Touch Pro has several posts from the guy who leaked the shots. He says there is a 3.5mm headphone jack on this phone.
incredible screen
What the hell !!
We planned to have this res all along, but we thought that we would tease it out first, then stiff our loyal fan-base when we have squeezed enough out of the market.
HAHAHA I like your comment Apple Computer Company!
i hate cdma, but im stuck with verizon
and if they make a verizon version (which i doubt they will)
im sold. no matter how much it is.
Dude, no sweat, VZW's getting it in 2012! Yay!
That's funny because CDMA is the most solid data network in the states..
VZW will be moving to the GSM standard of LTE for their 4G networking... so CDMA may become a thing of the past in the coming years.
Holy Crap that screens looks huge.
Holy crap that screen IS huge!
This is awesome! Plus, I'm sure it'll get hacked by the end of this year to run Android.
HTC FTW!
Maybe this is the G1?
HTC and Google playing with us with leaking the reference design pics out and
the "real" G1 being this..
I know, just wishful thinking - LOL
Sadly, any attempt by HTC to sell this handset in the United States with an OS other than Windows Mobile will be met with Redmond's 500+ sharky lawyers. Contractually obligated to be Windows ONLY. Don't you love anti-competitive practices? Why make a great product when you can just lawyer up and wipe the playing field clean?
The best we can hope for for this particular handset running Android is importing a non-US version.
That sucks, given that TouchFLO falls far short of making WinMo crave-worthy.
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/09/03/mossberg-reviews-htc-touch-diamond-cant-disguise-winmos-flaw/
Todd WTF are you talking about? HTC makes the G1 which runs Android and is set to go on pre-sale in mere days for T-Mobile US.
Looks very nice HTC
using your real picture as a Avatar is creepy as hell. Am I the only person who thinks so?
It doesn't make a difference. Both of your comments are pointless.
Yes, I realize what I've done.
@Tony, I do usually post "pointfull" posts, but I'm usually creeped out my selfportrait avatars, since I found this one particularly creepy, and this thread to be active, I thought it'd be a good venue to address this peeve of pine. Sorry :p
Agreed. If you're going to use a picture of a real person, they should be dead.
I'm sorry you creep yourself out Frankie.
And I was sayin it looks very nice, because before the Touch Pro/Diamond, etc... I didn't really like any of their phone designs.
can we have it this year pwetty pwease!!! (God, Sat.. er Santa hope y'all listening.)
WOW. this should have been the touch diamond.
hopefully this thing has a quick and responsive UI... anyone who used the regular diamond knows that it simply isn't fast and smooth enough.
c'mon htc you're the last phone maker i have hope in.
Spot on, that's the thing i hated about Diamond. I really hope the UI is smooth because it's hard to say no to that screen.
AGREED. This is how the Diamond should have looked. HUGE SCREEN, HUMONGOUS RESOLUTION.
Crap that phone looks great. ill give up a real keyboard for that huge of a screen. PLEASE PLEASE SPRINT just give me some hope that ull pick this up. All i want is a screen like my ipod touch. then my MOGUL can retire to that place old cellphones go.
I agree... I hope Sprint gets this phone ASAP as I was getting ready to upgrade my HTC Touch to a Touch Pro.... now I may wait for the Touch HD... By the way for all you who feel compelled to bash WiMo... I have a iPhone, and iPod Touch and two WiMo phones... all for development. I love them all but in fairness the Apple products are more fun but the WiMo products fit into my business infrastructure better... even with the new VPN and exchange functionality of OS2.0 I still don't get certificate handling my enterprise is setup to use. Bottom line... there is room enough for both... Apple drives WiMo designs and user interface to new higths and WiMo drives Apple Enterprise features to new hights (Can't we all just be friends?)

Don't lie andrew (dot dot dot) You don't use phones for business purposes (dot dot dot) You're writing style and spelling suck (dot dot dot)
I count 7.2 mini usb connector sizes for the 480 dimension.
If a mini usb connector width is 6.8mm, i get 95.1 mm for the diagonal or 3.75 inches.
Your my hero ^__^
What video codecs they do support? Can I watch DivX/XViD? MKVs? Downscaling from 720p to fit screen?
For quite some time I'm looking for a smart-phone which can also back up as video playback device. iPhone, Samsung and LG offerings are quote disappointing in that aspect. iPhone simply doesn't support anything outside MP4. Samsung/LG never really publish proper full list of supported formats; often video playback is even not mentioned in official tech specs.
Please wait patiently till Nvidia Tegra emerges with their first devices before 2008 ends. They promised 720p playback at 30fps.
dude its WinMo look for an application called TCPMP
its the VLC of WinMo
@grimreaper: 720p @ 30fps is an impossible target. best screens now are 480x800. And many devices actually already deliver that. check for example cowon a3.
@JohnTitor: thanks! that "VLC for WinMo" thing looks very very promising, especially when combined with such good screen :)
ATT NEEDS THIS!! I'll set my Iphone on fire and do a HTC touch dance in my living room. The screen is very very nice! And the cocaine lovers will love it also, it'll support a very nice 3 inch+ line hit. "coffee straw or rolled up dollar for snorting fun sold separately."
Day ruined. First the world didn't end today, then they didn't give me the money because certain someone in some other Western Union Office wrote E instead of B in my surname, and now as soon as I found a cell phone I like, I see something better! Completely ruined.
In one word: WANT! But only if the TouchFLO 3D is not TouchSTUTTER 3D.
If they have like 3.5mm on it, as well as mini-usb, GPS, wifi and sub-1000 dollar price tag, I'm sold.
Exactly.
In the midst of all the initial excitement, many people seem to forget this will be a painfully slow device. Swipe, wait, wait, wait, there's the animation.
Sorry but you don't put a .1 update to WM6 and PRESTO you have a fluid fast OSX. This phone should have been postponed till WM7 was out.
Also, the MSM7200 processor family has been used for development builds of Android. This phone looks amazing.
If I could get this with a QWERTY and a directional pad it would be perfect. That screen looks absolutly HUGE.
I don't like that the iPhone is causing all the phones out there to ditch the hardware buttons. We were moving back towards it and now we are moving away from it again. Oh well, one step forward and one step back.
You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but I know that I won't ever buy another phone that is not a touchscreen typing device.
The touchscreen typing/input experience varies significantly between users. You can claim that I've simply drank the kool-aid, and I'm not nerdy enough to have compared my wpm rates between qwerty/touchscreen, but I'm pretty confident that I'm much more proficient at typing on the iPhone than I ever was on my Blackberry, not to mention that having a keyboard built into the software allows for much more screen real estate when you DON'T need the keyboard. Sure, they are coming out with some nice slider qwertys, but at the expense of sleekness and an overall solid feel, generally.
Until they can unveil a new revolutionary interface that allows you to input text without looking at your thumbs, I'm all about the touchscreen. 480x800 just makes it all the sexier, as long as they can make the software not lag like it does on the Diamond :)
I won't buy any phone that *doesn't* have buttons. I've been watching all these iPhone knockoffs (in either specs or design or both) with horror - does nobody realize that approximately 99% of the market is still in clamshells with buttons, and that we want good phones too?
My wife recently got an LG Vu920 and jesus christ, that thing made me want to throw it across the room the first time I tried it. I was on a web page, tried to drag a scroll bar, ended up missing the scroll bar and hitting the "home" icon by mistake instead (I think it was "home", it was some icon that took me somewhere else). After waiting about 30 seconds for the page to load, I now had to wait for the thing to acknowledge my "stop" command, then acknowledge my "back" command, then re-load the same page I was on again. All because of the goddamn touch screen!
I've still got my Samsung SGH-A707 and while it is decent, there's been basically no development in clamshells in the 2 years I've had it. Not in this country, anyway - of course, in Japan there are probably 100 phones with buttons *and* a 480x800 screen and there have been for years (seriously, you can see some of them here: http://www.nttdocomo.com/features/foma906igallery/index.html).
Touch screens are the biggest step backwards in cell phone UI and usability in the history of cell phone design. And manufacturers wonder why overall consumer sales are down...

Could they stealth release this as the android phone too... oh i wish.
i need this
WOW. Whole lot of sexy in that pic.
Looks like this is the first real game-changer since the iPhone. :-o
Screen looks amazing. Looks like this thing will best the iPhone in literally every category, as long as the interface doesn't studder like the Diamond does. That was the major deal-breaker for me w/ that piece.
Just hope it has plenty of onboard storage, AND an SD slot. A Zune client would be awesome, too.
(HAD to mention the iPhone! ;-) )
Oh man that is such a sexy phone!
If it has winmo 7 then this thing will trump the iphone with hands behind its back. But no matter I will be getting it.
Looks awesome.
But if I know my HTC (and I unfortunately do) that battery will last for about 30 minutes of surfing before needing a charge.
Very nice. BUT.....do we trust the source? Is this a Photoshop job? If we do, is it GSM or CDMA? Is this a "world other than the US" model and will we see it here in the states in the next decade?
Nokia n810 800x480, its really nice to use screens with high DPI.
I bought my Toshiba G900 last summer and it has 800x480, what's the big deal? It runs whit WM6.1.
//kw
why did somebody BLACK BAR whatever's next to the 3G?
That is the location that shows the 3G Carrier network the phone is on. i.e. AT&T :)
carrier not revealed yet. ghey.
I could be wrong but in the past, ATT phones said "3G" whereas Sprint and VZW phones say "Ev". I haven't used the Diamond/Pro so I can't vouch for that. IT's a shame too because I was looking forward to maybe getting this but ATT is a dealbreaker. At least things are still moving along with HTC putting out tons of great devices in the near future. I second the interest in an Android or WM7 version of this.
The black bar is likely covering a carrier ID. There are only a handful of people out there with access a carrier's hardware prior to its release. If the company gets a hold of that picture _without_ the black bar, they will know it is one of their units. And from there they will surely trace it down to the person who's been showing off their toys without permission, as it is a small pool of testers to sort through. We all know they surf the tech sites looking for stuff like this.
Yep. It says HSDPA at the link so it looks like ATT if it's coming out in the states.
Multi touch?
As long as Apple holds the patent on that multi touch technology, no handset can make it up to the iphone in terms of usability comfort!
I mean multi touch as in a way to interact with the screen not MultiTouch (tm) as in apples specific implementation. So I'm quite sure others can join in on it and make their own impl? Take MS Surface for example... it can handle multi touch.
We need invent a new term for multi touch usability...
@ Ryan Trevisol If you are using Mossberg as your review source then you are surely lacking. He's so pro apple and didn't even know some of the settings on the phone for his poor excuse of a review.
What you can't see is that it has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack on top. Yes, I've seen this unit in person.
Out by Christmas huh. So this kinda kills the Diamond. I bet a lot of people who were waiting for the Diamond are just going to wait the extra couple months for this now. That's definitely the case for me.
Throw the new Touch Pro keyboard under that and I want, I want, I want.
I've been waiting for this phone since the PPC 6600, hopefully I can put my XDA Flame to rest soon.
@ JDL That's assuming it will come to their carrier. But I agree with you because I have been looking to get the diamond for sprint but this is the phone I wanted the diamond to be in terms of screen size. It was my main gripe with the diamond. Details on a release date and carrier could make me wait for this.
Have you really seen this device in person? What's the display size? 2.8 : ( or 3.5 : ) ?
I get it to be 3.8 inch thick when measured in photoshop.
Wow, HTC has just about every form factor covered. All they need now is a flip phone(new HTC Star Trac).
WVGA=Omnia what?
