iTunes 8 kills AirTunes, iPod touch causing BSOD
We were all excited to stream Genius-generated playlists from iTunes 8 to our Airport Express last night when -- poof -- "-3256 Unknown Error Occurred." This cryptic error, along with another under the equally descriptive name "-15000," has been keeping iTunes 8 upgraders from using their Airtunes on remote speakers. Turns out the issue is one of Firewalls and Firmware. The solutions come from users at Apple's discussion boards. Basically, you need to either turn off your Firewall and / or allow iTunes to accept incoming requests or update your Airport Express to the latest (7.3.2 as of this post) firmware version via AirPort Utility 6.3. Meanwhile, Windows-based iPod touch users are seeing Blue Screens of Death when plugging in their players due to some other undocumented problem. The solution there looks to be a reboot with the touch plugged in to force the system to recognize the device, run a sync, and turn off photo syncing (not the most elegant solution, clearly). Let's hope Apple at least updates this with something more descriptive than "-3256" in the future. Customer service reps at Apple say they're aware of the problems and are working on a fix.

"update your Airport Express to the latest (6.3 as of this post) firmware version"
I don't get this... latest AE firmware is 7.3.2 not 6.3...
This should be two separate stories
I have the same infra MacBookPro(iTunes8)->AirportExpress/AirTunes->Apple HiFi and i havent this problem. I can stream my tunes without any problems.
best,
Melwin
I had BSOD issues on Vista and 3G iPhone.
After lots of troubleshooting I found that unplugging my HP printer stopped the blue screens. I looked for updated drivers for the printer and found none. I've not had a chance to try any other troubleshooting to get the phone and printer to co-exist together.
It was serious. I have a Vista computer and when I updated my iTunes and connected my iPod Touch, it showed the BLUE SCREEN and I freaked out.
WHAT THE HELL IS THE PROBLEM IS APPLE?
I hope Apple makes the software(especially iTunes) carefully.
ummm...
HOLY SHIT ITS PINK!!

Installed iTunes 8 yesterday and my 3 AirTunes work fine. I didn't know there was an issue til today.
I' ve heard other people with the same problem. I think you can write about your problem in http://applediario.com, they always have good ways for explain you how resolve problems.
These days you need to wait about a month after a new update comes out for anything.
The thing with the touch and the blue screen is all a part of the Get a Mac-campaign. ;)
How about turning my 2.4ghz PC into a 286? Man talk about bloatware. :(
iTunes 8 has also caused my girlfriends macbook problems, when iTunes is started it "creates thumbnails" for all the albums, but immediately locks up and crashes... Every single time. I even tried to uninstall and go back to 7.7.1, but to no avail, as the library structure has been altered by a newer version of iTunes and isn't accessible. So back to broken iTunes 8.0 we went, even after cleaning everything up in the background with applejack. Anyone else had this problem? Know a solution? Steve?
P.S. No problems on the MacBook Pro.
looks like they seriously need to pull the plug on their lame a$$ commercials with Mac and PC. everything they release now sucks and all the people that wait in lines for hours are nothing more than their guinea pigs to find out what problems they need to address
I'm a long-time apple fan, but sh*t they're on my short list lately. My mac mini
sorry to repeat, first post got truncated.
I'm a long-time apple fan, but sh*t they're on my short list lately. My mac mini's (less than 2 y.o.) hard drive is failing. iPhone 2.0.2 apps freeze and crash daily, unable to place calls, sluggish typing, and now they want me to download iTunes 8 for what a fancy screen saver and some crappy music marketing ploy. No Thanks.
I upgraded to iTunes 8 last night and had no problem playing music through my Airport Express this morning. I even used the iPhone remote feature just fine from my bathroom while pinchin' one getting ready for work.
And as long as I'm providing too much information--I'm running a Macbook with Leopard. Cheers!!
Wow. They got their software working on one of their 20 configurations.
Bravo.
Seriously why is it that just about every soft/firm ware release from apple these days involves day, weeks or even months of annoyance and/or outright pain before it gets up to speed? It really sucks that they seem to releasing half-baked stuff and relying on their gets-it-right-rep and user's goodwill to get them by while they actually get the thing working.
I don't get it apple - you are ahead why not take your time and actually deserve the gets-it-right rep?
Wow. If you iFuckers could be as objective and professional when reporting Microsoft and/or Windows problems as you were with this epic fail, this would actually be a decent blog.
It also seems to break Remote on iPhone which is a shame... Apple, can we have a fix?
So heres how it went:
Last night, installed Itunes8, upgraded Touch to 2.1. Everything was peachy until this afternoon when i installed drivers for a logitech webcam. First reboot after install, BSOD at windows loading screen. Unplug touch, loads into windows fine. Plug touch in, INSTANT BSOD. Uninstall Logitech drivers, all is well again. odd? yeah, no kidding.
Works great for mac users! I have absolutely no problems, been listening with AirTunes all day and have synced my iPhone a billion times since it came out... Must be a windows only related issue...
"Basically, you need to either turn off your Firewall and / or allow iTunes to accept incoming requests or update your Airport Express to the latest (7.3.2 as of this post) firmware version via AirPort Utility 6.3."
– That might not be sufficient. On my machine both, Firewall settings and Firmware, are correct and up-to-date.
I had to switch on "Configure IPv6" ("Automatically") in the preferences to make iTunes 8 stream again to Airport Express stations via AirTunes.
Although this is also suggested in some of the forums, it's rather buried deep in there.
I have a solution to the problem and posted it on my blog. It is very simple to get your tunes streaming again.

I'm having the same problem. I have a brand new Macbook and Airport Express and recently installed itunes 8 (required for new Ipod touch). Now when I stream music to the AE, the music skips incessantly (every few seconds) and it's unbearable.
I updated the AE firmware - didn't help
I followed Scott's instructions - didn't help.
I'm now reasonably sure that nothing is going to help. I kind of hate Apple.
I must add my fix is related to the Windows version of iTunes 8.
