Buy a Zune. Buy something other than an iPod. Don't get me wrong, I love the iPod interface but the product is junk. Who do you know who still has an old iPod? Not many people, if anyone, and for two good reasons. First, they usually break after a year, maybe less. Second, they are "old" every 6 months because there is a new model on the shelves. Why pay good money for an mp3 player that you either send back every 6 months, or replace every 6 months?
I have had my iPod touch for 3 years now and it still works. Granted I've dropped it maybe twice and the battery life is probably 3-4 hours now, but it still works for me. New iPods, especially the Touch, look more fun but with lots of gadgets come more problems/more fragile objects. I like the microphone feature on the headphones too.
That's such a stupid reason. Same thing can be said about EVERYTHING in this freakin world. You probably don't wear your clothes from two years ago, but nobody's stopping you from doing it. You don't NEED to get the latest models/fashion/cars/whatever.
I have a gen 3 which works fine. I had to replace the battery last year. It was very east to do. The gen 3 is arguably the best iPod ever produced, or so I'm told. I can't say it's ever given me any real trouble.
I know several people that hold on to their old ipods for a long time.
I think the more likely reason you don't see them as often, is that most people want the new best thing. I will admit my video ipod 5g recently had one earphone go out on the ipod side...I could hypothetically get it fixed but right now I think I'd rather get the perks I'd get with an ipod touch.
I still use my ipod nano (1g) almost daily (Nike+). So I don't know what your talking about. I was thinking about getting a new one, but didn't like the fatty (3g). I guess I'll get one soon. And the Zune? Well, still looks a lot like my ipod nano (1g). At least the design... boring
Also not true I'm thinking of replacing my Mini I've had since February 05. It gets used about 4 hours every day been dropped many times and still works great. The only thing I had to do was change the battery 6 months ago it took 15 minutes and $20 from Ebay. I'm only thinking of upgrading it because I want to show photo's to friends and family. I probably give the mini to my son.
A couple years ago I wanted to get an mp3 player, and I was hell-bent on getting something other than an iPod. I bought, and subsequently took back, a SanDisk, Samsung, and Creative Zen Micro. The first two because of weird problems, and the Creative was a pain in the ass to load music onto. I finally decided to just get an iPod Mini, and if I really didn't like it, I could always just take it back. Turns out that I loved it, and it still works great to this day. I'm not still regularly using it though, because in between now and then, I bought a 5th gen iPod, 3rd gen nano, and an iPhone 3G.
I still have a 3rd generation in the glovebox of my car connected via iPod auto connector. I live in Texas so the car gets very hot yet the iPod is still going strong (except the battery but no battery will work well after being subjected to that kind of heat and always being plugged in).
My 3rd Gen 40GB still works fine and manages to get 2 or 3 hours from the battery. It is 5 years old and has a lot of mileage on it. The reason I replace them is to get new features and because I like new stuff. I've had _zero_ issues with the equipment, other than the ear buds, which do suck. I just leave them in the box.
I do wish they'd ditch Quicktime and "de-bloat" iTunes though.
WRONG i still have the 5G 30gb video along with a lot of other people i know. The classic is not much of an upgrade for it to be seen as well "old" if anything i say it looks better! few people still hold the 4G (photo?)
Wrong!! I, and tons of other people I know, still use our 3G, 4G, and mini iPods. They work great. I've dropped, kicked, tossed, and skidded my 3G 16gb iPod more times than I can count and I haven't even needed to replace the battery. I do also have an iPod touch that really rocks because, like most adults, I have a job that allows me to buy whatever I want without asking my parents for cash.
Well, I own an iPod Mini from 2005, I bought an iPod Video 60GB in 2006 (which was stolen) and last year I bought a Zune 30GB when it was on sale for $99!
My Mini's battery started acting up within the first year, and it doesn't hold a charge for more than 15mins. Took it to Apple for evaluation, and according to their tests, the battery lasted 2.5 hours of playing music, which according to them was reasonable! :-s I don't remember what the advertised rating for the iPod Mini was!
As I mentioned, my iPod video was stolen within 6 months.
The Zune has been PERFECT over the last year! I'm really happy with the way it works and it is sweet! I've never been happier with a PMP! The battery life is still respectably good! It works for 4 hours or so on a single full charge!
I still have my 3rd gen iPod from 2003 and it works fine. I have a friend with a 1st gen iPod from 2001 and it works fine. Please spare us your ignorant drivel.
P.S. let us know how your Zune is working 5 years from now. Until then, zip it.
I've got a ye olde 5G iPod Video since about 2 years ago, and damn has it taken some abuse. Still works fine though. Battery duration still good, little to zero crashes that I can remember, no problems porting my library from my old PC to my Mac... Only thing I would change about it is that the metal case on the back scratches too easily, so i have to have this silly rubber/silicone condom thing on it.
wait... I don't understand how anything you just said justifies that the ipod is shit... you just stated something vague like "noone even has old ipods" do you have a computer from 2001? no???
+ no ipod has FM which is hillarious. Buy from FM on the Zune will rule. What a great way to find new music. + the Channels thing will kick ass ... have the billboard top 100 always on there.
+ wireless sync at home
Also you get all of these features on all the devices ... not just expensive ones like with Apple.
Like for so many others, my ´03 iPod 3G 20GB is running just fine. And it has done some serious travelling... Now it lives in the car providing the Pioneer 6900 with the 2622 songs I can think of (anyone in the family) wanting to listen to while driving. Sync it up when I get new music, never any problems. My wife has a nano 2G, I've had a shuffle 1G, but now run with a 2G. All good. Thinking of getting the new touch or a 1G for remote controlling iTunes-to-hi-fi at home.
So bite and swallow. Or just swallow, your comment was so lame there's no need for teeth.
The phone has 256MB of RAM and a 1GHz processor, which do the job reasonably well, though the Anna interface will likely leave something to be desired for many smartphone users.

Wrong Matt. I have a 3rd Generation iPod, from 2003 (I think?), that still works, and my 5G iPod Video has been working great for like 2+ years.
Stop the FUD.
The new nano interface is great, but the iPod Classic with the split-screen is garbage.

oops i meant my iPod mini

The iPod Mini? It acts as my car's PMP now...
Pretty sure my iPod (w/click wheel) from 2004 still works flawlessly. I don't use it, but I gave it to a friend, who DOES use it.
P.S. My 1st-gen iPod nano also still works flawlessly. My mom uses it.
Haha, loser.
@ Matt: BULL. CRAP.

@nick
The touch has been out for like a year.
