Skullcandy to cram color mirasol display into MFM Pro headphones
Remember that Freestyle Audio player that was supposed to blow folks away with its integrated color mirasol display? Yeah, that one that still hasn't shipped? Qualcomm is apparently uninterested in that tiny little factoid, as it's proudly pumping the MFM Pro headphones as the "second color mirasol-enabled design for the US market." According to Jim Cathey, vice president of business development for Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, the deal with Skullcandy is being made to "move mirasol displays into the hands of more consumers," but considering just how long we've been waiting for the aforementioned DAP, we'd say the burden of proof is squarely in its court. Oh, and the ship date for these cans? There isn't one.

There are so many things wrong with your comment.
avester @ Sep 12th 2008 4:23AM
Skullcandy is the Alienware of audio, apart from the fact that Alienware performs good.
gad get @ Sep 12th 2008 5:10AM
No, Skullcandy is the Bose of audio--- oh, wait.
telepheedian @ Sep 12th 2008 6:50AM
Except Bose at least tries, well, a little bit anyway. The prices are insane, but it they sold them at about 30% of the actual price they would be a steal.
Seriously though, the $70 skullcrushers they had on display at Target are some of the worst headphones I've ever seen outside of the $10 pile. Low build quality, scratchy treble, no bass (even with their "bass booster" knob turned up). Also, their demo was set WAY too loud, making it hard to make a real judgement, no volume control whatsoever.

Can someone fill me in on what a mirasol display is?
j_g_puff @ Sep 12th 2008 5:28AM
Yes. In situations like this, I turn to a tool called 'google':

That looks so easy to pilfer. You just yoink it out of the cheap plastic noggin-harness and scarper before the tune-touting fashion-nonce can understand what's happened.
gad get @ Sep 12th 2008 6:10AM
I love the way you talk! :D
j_g_puff @ Sep 12th 2008 7:05AM
I love the way you dance! :D
Andy TGD @ Sep 12th 2008 7:20AM
Hey j_g, you've got a bit of a fan club going there! ;-)
gad get @ Sep 12th 2008 7:46AM
I don't dance. Ever. Sorry.
Andy TGD @ Sep 12th 2008 5:54AM
Um, I like the concept and all, but am I the only one who thinks you'd look like an idiot (or a cyborg) walking around town in these?

Agreed. If I see a twat wearing these my fists will say hello to his friend. Cue the point where someone hacks them for adverts or whatever.
Gman @ Sep 12th 2008 7:05AM
When did skullcandy open? I never saw anything made by them, and then a few weeks ago I started seeing a ton. Also, do they make anything besides headphones?
gad get @ Sep 12th 2008 7:48AM
Just snazzy packaging.

Skullcandy got a full page piece in Inc. Magazine's latest issue about the top growth companies in the US. They've had a lot of exposure all of a sudden.

I was very impressed by my $14 Skullcandy ink'd earbuds...I couldn't believe the bass. I'm sure these will sound great.
telepheedian @ Sep 12th 2008 10:43PM
Those are the only product they make worth buying, and only if you really need cheap earbuds instantly. The bass on those is definetly there, and the sound canceling is existent, but the sound quality really isn't that great, the bass overpowers the rest of the music, leaving it with a sort of muffled, lo-fi sound. Then again, they're only $15, I actually have a few pairs because I needed a replacement ASAP.
Chris @ Sep 12th 2008 1:03PM
I would stay away from anything worth more than $50 from Skullcandy. I've had a hell of a time getting a pair of high-end headphones warrantied. It's been 6 months now and they're still refusing to make things right.
gad get @ Sep 13th 2008 4:17AM
Nothing they make is worth more than $50.
Josh @ Sep 18th 2008 7:35PM
I have a pair of Full Metal Jackets, they were alright - bit heavy on the bass - but ok for about £35. They then broke - the cable just stopped working.
I just switched to the warranty replacement pair that Shure sent me to replace my E2C's (had the common wire over the ear cracking problem) and i'm just using the E110's. Much nicer and the same price if not cheaper!
