DevTeam releases PwnageTool and QuickPwn 2.1, wants to rumble
With firmware 2.1 now out for the iPhone and iPod touch we bring you the inevitable PwnageTool and QuickPwn response. Apparently, the DevTeam took offense to a previous posting where we questioned the relevancy of continued jailbreaks in the age of the AppStore and official, worldwide iPhone distribution.
So, we'll put it to you dear reader: as much as we respect these guys for their gen-1 iPhone unlocking and pre-AppStore era work, is PwnageTool and the ability to jailbreak your phone still as important as it was?
Update: By a three-to-one margin it's clear that you still love your Pwnage! As such, we'll continue to cover the DevTeam's exploits just as obsessively as before.

I'm looking forward to this, 2.0.2 keeps crashin on me apps
Nice try Making up Engadget - only a few days ago your editor through the DevTeam under the bus - saying its useless after Itunes 8 came out - SHAME ON YOU ENGADGET!
NOW GO TO YOUR ROOM!
Let's Get Ready To Rumble!!!!

If I am still running 1.1.4 on my iPhone, could someone explain to me how I can upgrade to 2.1 and then re-jailbreak my phone again? I used ziphone to jailbreak it the first time.
Google for guides online. PwnageTool will do the work for you, just follow the instructions. The only trick is that you have to hack the modem (an option that is by default off), otherwise you end up with a nice brick :)
So in summary: use the pwnagetool, but be careful and flip the right switches. Nothing too complicated about it.
Just use Pwnage to create a custom 2.1 restore file. Restore with that file in iTunes 8. Bootneuter (included with pwnage) will undo the damage done by Ziphone.
"but be careful and flip the right switches."
I just want to clarify that the only danger of flipping the wrong switches as far as I know is more investment of time to create another custom restore file and reinstall it on the phone. It is a safe process.
First, upgrade it to 2.1 in iTunes. It should then be locked (emeregency calls only).
*Then* you unlock it with PwnageTool or QuickPwn.
You can find download mirrors for both QuickPwn 1.1 and PwnageTool 2.1 here: http://www.iphone-hacks.com/2008/09/13/quickpwn-11-pwnagetool-21-for-mac-osx-released/
And of course they are relevant!
Without homebrew on Iphone or Itouch I wouldnt even think about buying one.
Looks like the author of this poll is getting pwned
The jailbreak is a big deal for the very large amount of non-officials 1st gen iPhone owners.
thank you, one person that thinks straight!!
Yes and I think this vote miss one very important thing: Yes, but not that much. App Store is great, but there is still need for Cydia/Installer.
And just wait, when DevTeam releases a unlock for iPhone 3G they are back!
That was my take on it, actually. The jailbreak/unlock isn't becoming less relevant. It's becoming relevant to fewer people.
The app store and its robust catalog certainly do ensure that not as many people need a jailbroken phone to get the software they want. However, for those who need functionality that Apple or AT&T won't allow, there is still no alternative to jailbreaking.
As more journalists start to fall outside the circle of those who need to jailbreak, this will continue to happen. You have to look at the bigger picture to see why the pwnage tools are still just as important as ever, even if you no longer need them yourself.
The only reason why jailbreaking still holds some attraction to me is OpenSSH!! All other apps are pretty useless: video recording apps suck big time since the iPhone's hardware is quite limited (maybe something to be added in the 3rd generation iPhones). The biggest problem I see is the proliferation of cracked AppStore products (which we all expected) but I hope never gets too big... If you like, come on, buy it! :)
But.. OpenSSH FTW ^^, I've saved myself a few restores after having those "lovely" frozen boot logos by SSH'ing in and renaming the Applications folder... Finishes the boot process instantly and then you can rename the folder again and all is well! Plus I can backup individual files (like sms.db or notes, etc...) and actually create my own little app to read them... And those are the reasons I jailbreak my phone!!
OHHH... OpenSSH *AND* Scrobbled... AND "TaskbarNotifier" (still can't believe Apple does include this one by default)!
Well I need them because I bought a 2.1 iphone and I needed jailbreak/unlock so I can use it on T-mobile.
There isn't an unlock for the 3G yet.
he might be using a 1st gen iPhone, i dunno, since there are almost as much 1st gen as 3Gs.
That's my reason. However, they need to break the 3G first. I don't want to leave T-Mobile.
brains...BRAINS!
guys, he is wishing he has brains, poor guy =/
BRIAN! I NEED BRIAN!
Why did you guys make this a "Breaking" post, and "Digg" it? Attention whores much. Leave the Dev team to do what the Dev team does, don't argue because something isn't out five minutes after the firmware's released.
i just need jailbreaking for disable the fucking dictionary...
A dictiorary might not be a bad thing for you ... Unless you are typing in another language I suppose
you said it! Atleast apple should give us the option of disabling it if we dont want to use it.
thats right... dictionary sucks, can't change it & even can't disable it
I need the jailbreak because the AppStore policy is bad and all the apps which arent allowed there are in Cydia or Installer! So what about a torch app which turns the screen brightness to 100% instead of just showing a white screen? Or a mobile scrobbler which syncs the iPod on your iPhone with Last.fm... I love Winterboard and BossPrefs is a must-have if you easily want to turn off edge! I can record videos and I really really can't live without the ability to change files! And I always back up my iPhone manually as the iTunes backup takes about 5 hours and the last time I lost some camera photos as iTunes ruined my backup and said its damaged or not compatible!
Light by Erica Sadun does just that, it is free. Air Sharing does file sharing over wifi, it is also free.
I agree with the winterboard and all those, it would be nice to customize MY phone some more but it's not a deal breaker for me.
True, but nearly none of the 3rd party apps have been ported to 2.0/2.1. Most apps are dev tools or springboard customization (though Winterboard and its animated skins rock).
Jailbreak isn't what it used to be. BRING BACK FREE APPS!!!!
Jailbreak is so important since you get root access, forbidden apps like mxtube, and categories and because of access on winter board. Also did I mention cracked ipas???
I hope there will till be development, not because appstore makes it redundant, but rather 1 of my iphones is a gen 1 iphone, that requires jailbreaking every time a new version is released. It was never activated, and is not on an official iphone plan (even though I use ATT). My 3g is fine and legit, but when I got my wife her 1g iphone, they were not honoring corp discounts, of which we get 20% off service through her company. Hence why I jailbroke it.
Now everytime I update the phone to a new firmware, the phone works, but the radio stops (using the std upgrade path). Using the dev team methods results in a perfectly working iphone.
So yes, in the end, there will always be a reason for the dev team, atleast for people with jailbroken first gen iphones
Hey, us Linux users over here still need a jailbreak.
It's needed badly, because in the land of Slovenia, there is no official iPhone 3g. We can go and buy it at our neighbours, the Italians, unlocked and almost ready to work. The big problem, however is, number format. In order to normally use the iPhone 3G in Slovenia, you have to add the right number formats. That's why I badly need jailbreak.
The second thing is autocorrection, in order to be able to write in a foreign language on the iPhone, one has to turn of the autocorrect feature. Again it's only possible with jailbreak.

Doh - duplicate.. need a way to delete dupes
I already got my iPod Touch 1Gen with 2.1 software jailbroken and love it even more, now i can call it, "the funnest iPod ever" just like Apple. I think Jailbreak is good for Apple cause people that does not have a iPod Touch or iPhone and read about Jailbreak want to go and buy either one of em' just to jailbreak it and be able to do more in that Amazing piece of Hardware and Software!!!
ive had my iphone jailbroken since the day i got it, and never updated it until the devteam jailbroke the next firmware. there is so much that can be done to it that you cant do with it locked down. until apple releases something to customize the phone(themes, icons, etc...) i will always be jailbroken. there is also so much stuff in cydia/installer for free that that alone trumps the app store IMO.
The only fun things I could find are Qik, NES.app, and Cycorder. I had all of those when I had 2.0.2 jailbroken. Winterboard ran a little slow, and it made my Wi-Fi not work at all
I get a 2001 error when using pwnage tool, an ideas?
I got that too, my screen went White, disconnect then reconnect the iPhone, an restore to the custom firmware again, it should work second time :)
There will always be a need to JB because not everyone wants to be SHEEP and play follow the leader. Iv got a Touch and ill continue to JB it because i like being able to customize my ipod the way i want. And install any APP i want. NOT the way STEVO says i should.. And ill continue to help my IT dept and friends and coworkers JB theres also.
You are a SHEEP. Simply buying an iphone/touch makes to one of us.
Yes, I do own and use a 1st gen iphone. I jb it but for ME it was not worth the hassle to do again with every new software update from crapple.

Without a Jailbreak, my iPhone wouldn't even do half the things it does now. So yes, it's definitely still relevant.
Now leave the Dev Team be :P
Agreed. Jailbreaking adds a bazillion times more functionality to the iPhone. Without jailbreaking, the iPhone wouldn't be worth the money.
For these people who live in some of the many countries which Apple doesn't bother to officially import the iPhone to, it is extremely crucial to have a jailbreaking option so it'll be possible to install support for the local language. So many thanks to the DevTeam!
Besides, Apple must realize that its whole "unsupervised-software-for-the-iPhone-is-extremely-dangerous" attitude is pathetic since millions of its Mac users run such software everyday and there are hardly any viruses for the Mac.
Honestly, i only use jailbraking to use Winterboard, and maybe one or 2 apps that are not in the app store, or free in the app store. the main use is winterboard though. If apple allowed winterboard to be in the app store, then i would prob not jailbreak any more.
Pwnage tools keeps the playing ground fair. A lot of apps work on dontations or are just free from dev teams to promote other products. The app store can change terms for any reason. Running homebrew on a device I paid for should be my choice , not any elses.
Keep jailbreaking so I can use themes, logos, ringtones and Cydia.
Report the news Engadget , dont make policy on information or your visitors may diminish. Cnet?
jailbreakming is the only way to get emulators on the touch and iphone right?
of course it's relevant ... pull your heads out of your ass endgadget. you have been removed from my rss feeds.
It use to be necessary for my iPod touch but now that I have an iPhone 3G it's okay. I have access to over 3000 apps on the App Store and the internet everywhere, I don't need more than that. I have fine with the strict policy on the App Store, they have made some really awesome apps so far.
It's quite relevant, as 3rd party apps was only one of many reasons to Jailbreak. Filesystem access, more control of running processes are just two. Not to mention the ability to run apps that didn't make the App Store's TOS, some for bullshit reasons. So yes, I believe it's still relevant to get full control of a device I paid for. Thanks Dev Team.
I jailbreak not because there are any amazingly interesting programs on Cydia. I pretty much only install ssh, bossprefs, poof, and winterboard. I like having ssh access to the filesystem. While others had to restore their phones when they wouldn't boot due to too many programs, I just ssh into the phone and temporarily disable the watchdog process and I'm back in business. Of course, that particular problem seems to be fixed now but there are other interesting things one can do with ssh access to the phone.
I need these guys to keep going personally because I need the unlock to use on T-Mobile (1st Gen Phone is fine with me since T-Mobile has yet to get 3G in my area). Sure, the app store is getting more and more things in it, but there is a whole different community out there writing apps and such that are great to have on my iPhone. I hope for all of our sakes these guys never decide to throw in the towel, our iPhones need them :)
DevTeam rocks !!!
-Much more customization
-More "cooler" apps
-Emulators
-SSH
-No Rejection Policies
-No NDA
-http://www.macrumors.com/2008/09/13/apples-app-store-rejection-policies-raise-concerns/
When the OS supports background apps and you can get OpenSSH in the App Store, *then* and only then will I say jailbreaking is past its usefulness.
( ) How do you say pwn?
( ) How do you say PCMCIA?
pown. p-c-m-c-i-a.
Pwn is pronounced "own". Pwned is pronounced "owned". Pwnage is pronounced "ownage". It was typed with a P once, unintentionally, and it caught on, but you don't *say* it that way. Drives me nuts whenever I hear some kid on say "pooned" or "pownage".
I cite Red vs. Blue: "Dude, you got owned. I saw it. Fucking OWNED."
I gotta wonder how they were trying to pronounce PCMCIA. "Pakemsia?"
More important than just jailbreak is the unlocking. Try doing that through the App Store...
I'd love to get in on a lot of this homebrew action, but considering how much I pay for this phone, I can't risk it.
What's this risk you speak of? The iPhone is extremely difficult to brick, and I am using the term brick in the true meaning. You can always restore it to pristine state.
The only risk you could put your phone through is if you planned to use BootNeuter to unlock it and use it on another carrier. If you have an active iPhone account, the worst case scenario is you would do a full restore to return to official software.
Now trust me, just one month ago I felt the same way. Had a beautiful new iPhone 3G, shiny new applications - what would be the point of jailbreaking, why risk it? Trust me, though, once you take that brave step, you won't want to run the iPhone OS without it ^^
Yup. Still matters. Until I can scrobble and have Winterboard themes through AppStore it will always matter.
One more thing...how do you say pwn???
I upgraded my ipod touch from 1.1.4 to 2.1 yesterday, paid the $10 ad everything. I've always loved my jailbroken ipod, but the free apps through the App Store were awesome. I feel no need to go back.
Until the app store releases Intelliscreen for all Iphone users; I'll be forced to jailbreak my phone. I can't live without Intelliscreen!!!!!
It's not that we need more applications for the iPhone, they're there if we want them. It's about sending a message to Apple that if they're going to provide a platform for development, there need to be few if any limitations on content, no entry fee, and appropriate regulations to their store. Right now that just isn't happening. Apple's developed a great product, but their distribution system and the policies around it suck.
I love the dev team (minus the pwn/lame name). I'm on an unlocked jailbroken iphone, first with an 8gb running 1.02 unlocked firmware way back in August 07. Now using a 16gb 1st gen iphone using the pwn method. Just upgraded last week to 2.02. I'm on t-mobile using my old plan paying $5.99 for the internet, $5 (for unlimited text), and $25 for my minutes (shared with my familia).
Hell YEAH I'm looking forward to these firmware updates. I which installer and Cyndia was more varied with its apps like it was prior to the app store launch.
Its not "where we questioned the relevancy of continued jailbreaks, Mr. Rucker, its *YOU* who questions it, and its *YOU* the dev team is taking a shot at. As long as apple continues to deny amazing applications based on cosmetic decisions or competition to their own applications, hackers are going to work around the clock to beat them.
I am impressed by their work and dedication to the community, for no other reason other than they love the iPhone and want to continue working with it. Besides, if it weren't for the jailbreaking community I doubt we'd see all these new features like an App store just a year after launch.
Of course these hacks are relevant!!! How else can I use SSH to save important or special voicemail message or play NES games on my iPhone? These are two of the things I utilize most!
I love my iPhone, and I have Tmobile. I don't want to be on ATT. Therefore, for me, there is only jailbreak. So, I suppose relevancy is in the eye of the beholder. For me there is no other option. For those running Linux, there is no other option. I'd say there is a large healthy minority who want things our own way. You can ignore jailbreaking if it no longer interests you but I want my phone running to the best of it's ability on the carrier of my choice, and frankly Tom, since is the first I've heard of you, what makes YOU relevant?
The only reason you need to jailbreak your iPhone: Qik.
What about all the people who don't have legally available iPhones in their area, such as in Israel?
PwnageTool is still very relevant.
Thanks for the effort from all those people involved in jail-breaking the iphone, in all the teams and in all the groups!
I certainly don't have the skills to do it, so I'm very thankful that they do and that they are prepared to put their time and their hard work into it and to share the results with the rest of us.
I wouldn't touch an iphone unless I could jail-break it, simply on principle... I don't buy computing electronics that I don't have some degree of control over: mobiles, desktops, laptops, PDA's, iPhones etc.
Add to that a long-standing resentment to the mistreatment we all get from the mobile phone companies, and jail-breaking becomes a real gift for me :o)
Keep up the good work!
It's not so much that Cydia or Installer is filled with multitudes of great apps and games, but rather that it enables doing some apps that AppStore apps can't. For example, QuickGold is an amazing addition that I can't live without (or I could, but it certainly helps with one of the horrid deficiencies of the iPhone, namely Springboard), and is impossible to make with the official SDK.
So, thanks Dev Team! You make my life so much easier :)
QUESTION: Does qwikpwn slow down your iphone, i keep putting it on and taking it off when things seem not to work right. When i take it off bugs are still there. Is it the phone or qwikpwn doing this. Even with yesterdays firmware update my phone crashed 3 times while on the internet.
The pwnage tool is the ENTIRE reason why I bought the iPhone...without it, the iPhone is just some restricted piece of crap. Useless App Store apps cannot solve the iPhone's shortcomings that Apple placed into it. Can't download files in Safari...WTF.
Admittedly, the JAILBREAKING process is losing relevancy as all the developers who once offered their apps for free via Installer / Cydia now (rightfully) make money off of them in the AppStore. And the apps the Apple declines that do show up in Cydia / Installer.app often now cost more than an AppStore app. 95% of the apps on my iPhone come straight from the AppStore.
With that said, the Pwnage Tool is still VERY much relevant as it does more than just jailbreak the iPhone. It allows 1st Gen iPhone users such as myself (and any other iPhone user not on a 3G network) to use the world's best cell phone. If I suddenly couldn't unlock my iphone I would be very disappointed. I would more than gladly donate some extra cash to the DevTeam to continue their great work.
If you have an iPod Touch (don't call it an iTouch... I hate that), then Pwning it is all but pointless. But if you have a phone you want to use on a network that isn't going to charge you an arm and a leg and then still scan your couch cushions for more extra change, then Pwning is not only relevant, but essential.
I just looked up the instructions for quickpwn to jailbreak 2.1 and let me tell you its the complete opposite of quick, 14 steps including upgrading itunes then uninstalling itunes then installing an old version and updating again.
Hmm you probably are referering to one of the copycat sites.
To run PwnageTool or QuickPwn, you just need one step: launch the application and follow the prompts.
Where are the options:
º No one cares.
º Engadget should stop accepting so much money from Apple so that we get less crappy Apple 'articles' flooding the site.
?
How about this for a reason: 500,000 1st-gen iPhones in "unsupported" countries which want to run firmware 2.1? That's half a million people.
I am one of them, I need my 1st gen iPhone to be unlocked, and I want the latest firmware. Without Pwnage, not possible.
With the 3G iPhone, at least you can buy an officially unlocked version. However, I still would want to jailbreak it because I want to be able to install "unsanctioned" applications. I want to do whatever I want with my phone: Switch between my 5 different SIM cards, and use cool apps such as the one which creates ringtones from any song in my iTunes library right there on the phone.
How can you even question their relevance?? The app store is soo limited... you can't do anything cool with it... it's fine for excactly that- apps... but no skinning, modding, emulating, unlocking, tethering... there's so much you can do with a jailbroken iPhone that can't be done with anything else on ANY other device...
ok so has anyone here actually quickpwnd their 2.1 iphone yet. I had 2.02 jailbroken and had so many problems with speed, lockups, backing up, etc. Now with 2.1 a majority of these problems are fixed and i'm afraid if i jailbreak again it's going to start being sluggish again. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I can tether my iphone 3G to my Powerbook.
Jailbreaking is essential for me just for that. !!
En....dudes you lost the plot!
Yes, you can get an iphone anywhere. However, it requires switching to certain services that may or may not be what you are looking for. And unlike the iphone with appstore, those services aren't so open to personalization. If you want an iphone without a data plan and don't want to have to renew your contract, the dev team kicks butt and takes names. if you want an iphone on tmobile, or some other smaller SIM network, pwnage is the way to go. for their unlocking, they are awsome. however, the stability of these programs (read: i have had my phone maginacally enter dfu mode 4 times in the last 2 weeks while using cydia) is questionable, tho hopefully 2.1, which improves app stability across the board, should help.
weakest post of alll time on engadget.
Come on really? a damn blog about gadgets smashing the creators of something that allows us to use our gadgets 100% the way we want...
2 heads are always better than one - especially when one of the heads is a group of my peers.
Good point.
The question of whether or not it's relevant to be able to hack any gadget should never be asked here. It should be a given.
Engadget, what happened?
Happy to support pwnage. I always look forward to their new posts.
Keep on Truckin'.
HighFIVE.
Keep up the pwn, I'd love to see it on the 3G, (does it unlock the 3G iphone yet?) I moved from the US to Canada recently and even though I paid the cancellation fee with AT&T, Rogers is making life difficult for me by telling me that I can't use my 3G phone with their service and that I'll need to buy a new one. So I'm stuck using my 1st gen iPhone until the 3G is unlocked.
I'd like to see apple stick up for legitimate phone buyers and allow them to unlock. Now that we are all paying through the nose to break contracts we should be able to use the device as intended with any carrier available.
Thanks dev team, you rule!
I want pwnage to never stop just because for the sake of what it is. A modified firmware. :)
OF COURSE IS RELEVEANT! duh! :)
Just jailbroken and unlocked on my 1st gen iphone.
I have had enough of my local carriers (o2) piss poor signal.
Now im going to put my contract right down and get a sim only deal from Voda.
EDGE was non existent anyway so no losses there.
I am extremely grateful to have this option thanks to the dev guys.
Please keep up the good work.
