Lenovo IdeaPad S10: the heat it generates is remarkable
We've been pretty underwhelmed by the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 thus far, and the news that this machine runs particularly hot (and not in the good way!) isn't likely to win over too many, uh, fans. The keyboard itself gets pretty warm, with temperatures measured between 38 and 42°C (100.4 and 107.6°F). That slightly edges out tests performed on the Eee PC 900 (101°F / 38°C), and leaves your Cloudbook (83°F / 28°C) as cool as a cucumber. There's no word on the bottom side's heat signature, but with keys like this we aren't expecting good things.

Buy an MSI Wind!
It seems to me that this is somewhat misrepresented. It's not like that's the idling temperature of the S10 in a 70 degree room. That's the temperature after some intensive testing, in an 80 degree room. It's not really surprising that it heats up, after that, seeing as it's a netbook.
I'm more interested in what the temperature is like running Word 2007 and Firefox, in a 60-70 degree room.
And... That wasn't supposed to be a response to you, Marcello.
At least I won't need to use the heater in the winter. The heat output may seem like a bad thing, but it's actually an advanced self-defence mechanism for the planet.
It's definitely Lenovo's hottest holiday item!
You could boil a kettle of tea on that goddamned thing !
boiling point = 100º....
Flashpoint... water boils at 100 degrees. Did you go to school? 50 degrees won't even make a pot of tea blink, although it would provide a hefty burn if thrown over a nerd.
it would feel like you're using it while sitting outside in the blistering sun, where you wonder if you're doing damage to it - no worries, it's now built in.
@Samboini, talking about being a nerd, boiling point is 100 deg C under 1 atm air pressure. it is actually possible to boil water at 42 deg C when air pressure is low enough. flashpoint is probably climbing mount Everest, but his tea won't taste very good.
wow you guys have no sense of humor. did you get picked on in school so much you cant let it go?
v3xx, honestly if anyone else said it they probably wouldn't have got low ranked. It's just Flashpoint deserves it.
Well that's not too bad compared to my MacBook Pro which routinely goes over 40ºC according to smcfan and when I'm using both OSX and XP (vmware), I have to run the fan full blast to keep it below 45ºC.
Well, it is a nice heater during winter though.
Wow.
Insert paris hilton catch phrase (That's Hot)
An english site (Engadget) is quoting a French site, which is quoting a Chinese site. Did some smart guy here actually bother to check the original Chinese article?! Something could be lost in translation. I don''t know. I'm just sayin'... Some site says the temp was measured after 1h of test at 100% CPU load.
Wow, my Cat would never get off the keyboard if I bought one of those. At least she only noses at the eee700.
I wonder if Lenovo will start shipping a 'hot plate' accessory, powered by the heat from the lappy!
HOTTTT PLATESSSS!!!
Don't touch it, don't go near it, DON'T EVEN LOOK AT IT!
every home needs a laptop heater.
good. winter is coming .. and i need to buy netbook and also heater... 2 in 1 ! ;) lmao
It's a feature.
Lenovo's marketing spin dollars at work!
Holy Jesus Christ on a pogo stick!
they should market this in the north and south pole....
"not only will it cook for you, but it will do your math homework"
Looks like Intel's Atom doesn't run as cool as promised.
The Atom in the MSI wind has merely a thin piece of aluminum for a heatsink that air is blown off of. Its not finned in any way, shape or form. Just a flat piece of aluminum. And it doesn't get warm at all. Lenovo must have done something wrong, cuz I don't think its a trait inherent to the Atom, but more to the implementation.
I wonder on what surface the device was placed during "warm up"..not a lap, right?
Netbooks, you used to be cool man...what happened?
Netbooks still cool, you pay later, LATER!
Epic fail? My MSI Wind barely gets warm to the touch, even when charging the battery... Weird.
That's a real shame. Especially as its innards are the same as pretty much every other netbook, including Dell's offering, which is fanless.
According to notebookreview, the hottest part of the Dell's keyboard (37c/98f)is cooler than the coolest part of the Lenovo.

I was seriously considering the Lenovo, but now I think I'll wait to see how Samsung's netbook turns out.
(I'd consider the Dell if it had a proper keyboard)
Anyone know what the figures are for the HP Mininote? That is the hottest notebook I have touched.
Christ on a bike thats hot, Good Job winters coming.
How are you supposed to type anythng with all those numbers on the keyboard?
Portable Furnace.
Yes, but will it make toast?
well, heat rises. maybe it's by design that the heat escapes through the keyboard rather than scalding your lap.
but, yeah, that's fairly warm.
That's nothing. My Compaq (with OSx86 on it) pulls about 80 degrees Celsius just idling.
Crotch burner, no?
well... you won't need that usb coffee heater anymore.
I hate hot laptops or hot pc's.
I just cant wait for quantum computers to solve that annoying problem.
(ps: how about we all slowly start using Kelvin instead of celcius and fahrenheit would make a lot of things easier)
well... look at the bright side.
you won't need that usb coffee heater anymore.
After your done using it, just flip it over and viola you can cook your eggs for breakfast
Apple, you reading? Lenovo's horning in on your turf! Time to lay the smackdown!
China brings its One Child Policy to America!!!!!
Bellend!
Blow me!!!
On the plus side, it probably will increase typing speed for fear of burning your fingers off
It's all standard to Apple's policy
bad news nooo ; ; i think i will stop think about getting one and go for msi wind maybe it is the best one atm . i ad 701 its so hot i dont want more hot mini pc its too hot here in my country
Wow. If that doesn't bake your potential children, then I don't know what will.
Well... I do... But that's beside the point. D:
I always thought that Asus' slogan "Rock solid, Heart touching" was a bit silly but this IdeaPad certainly got my creative juices flowing in the same direction... how about "Lenovo - Nut roasting, Egg boiling", just to cover both sexes.
The bottom side was cooler, with temps between 28C and 35C at the hottest (again, under trackpad).
The fan is blowing out 28C air.
The screen is 28C as well.
David
To make it official (official that the MSi WIND owns the others, that is), here are my readings from off of my WIND:
Keyboard Top (L-to-R): 31, 33, 33
Keyboard Bottom (L-to-R): 32, 35, 35
Wristpad (L-to-R): 33, 38, 33
The trackpad was the hottest area on the keyboard at 38
Now I'm waiting for Samsung's netbook. When will it end?
I have a Lenovo 3000 v100 (conventional) laptop computer that regularly exceeds 101 degrees on the left half of the keyboard and lower casing. I think the Lenovo design team must intentionally design their systems to vent some heat through the keys.
Me? I put a fan-driven laptop cooler underneath the laptop when it's in my office, and the keyboard temperature drops way down. I don't know if I'd go to that trouble with a netbook, though.
wow
first the fucked up shipping date that is delayed for 2 months and now this overheating problem.
I think Lenovo should just stick to their rock solid thinkpad and ideapad, netbook is really a good game for Lenovo.

I'm starting to think Lenovos run much hotter / have more heat management issues than other computers. I have two here; and granted they are full laptops, this article gives me some pause to question Lenovo's success in temperature management. I could keep my old Dell between 42 and 55, and there was not heat externally on the keyboard and screen. When I first put clocking software in the Lenovos, it registered 90. Slowing the clock, I get it down to 65, but that's really the lowest I can get it. More relevant to this article, the heat radiates throughout the whole PC - and the entire left half, esp keyboard, gets pretty freaking hot!
Christ, you guys think that's hot? My MBP's *idling* temperature is 40ºC.
Yea, my MacBook Pro get's uncomfortably hot. Not sure what the temperature is, but if you press your skin against it, it almost burns.
Lenovo is learning well from HP . lol
please keep in mind that this was right after running pc mark 05 for a hour or more and the room temp is 27C.

Thanks, k2001. I'm glad somebody read the original article. It appears that not even Mr. Flatley did: the mangled translation reads, "The temperature at the bottom of the body is also covered in a high-temperature components of the reached 40 degrees Celsius above the standard." Seems to indicate that the bottom is about the same as the top, no? In any case, I don't regret my order. It has a decent price, a nice keyboard, a recognizable brand, and a hard drive large enough to hold all the software and files I need for graduate school. Besides which, I can't believe that some readers still can't comprehend the attraction of a notebook light enough to carry around. It's not going to be my only computer. I seriously considered the Dell, but I can't use even a 16GB drive, and my current Latitude is the worst POS I've ever owned.
Can we spell "Engadget, you FAILED."?
This sucks, first they told me they were offering the wrong video card, then a 2.5 month delay for my s10 and now this heating issue? Glad I canceled my order
Lenovo won't allow customers to choose the OS that is preinstalled on their products (you are stuck with Windows). I hope they enjoy the decrease in sales from others who WANT a choice, and who choose other manufacturers' products which cater to this demand.
That "burned me" enough not to purchase anything from them. Ironically, that looks as though it saved other parts of my body from being roasted by their poorly-implemented thermal design.
LOL at anyone buying these toy "netbooks"
Useful if you're looking hide your identity and need to loose your fingerprints though...
Yeah, a great idea! At least, until you realize you're the only person in your geographic area without fingerprints.
.
well said.
Stop complaining, you bunch of pansies. Atleast you get free roasted nuts. You know how much the street corner vendors charge for roasted nuts in NYC?
That's nothing. My MacBook, as of right now, is 170ºF and shows no signs of cooling down, even in an air-conditioned room. (The computer is really the reason I have the AC on in the first place!)
No one is going to mention that this was not NORMAL operating conditions?
Geez.. talk about one sided.
These measurements were taken after a benchmarking program such as PCMARK was run. Try running ANY laptop at full capacity for several minutes, and see how hot it gets.
Hah..This makes me feel better that I just sold all 3 of these on Ebay. Not sure if its really that hot cause I never opened the boxes as much as I wanted to.I was trying to decide to keep a S10 for myself and sell my latitude x300 that I got for $200 on ebay or vice versa. At the end I just can't part with my beloved x300.Thus far this is really the only negative review I read so far, though it just came out.Well I'm happy with my decision to sell them and made some moola....Really my x300 kicks all these netbooks rear, tho I find myself lusting for one when I see one.Ahh..I guess I'll wait for the duo atom netbooks, whenever they figure that out.
