HTC's Touch HD unveiled in very much official glory
We're still sans a press release, but a friendly tipster found this quite official page at HTC's very own site, depicting the sexy Touch HD from every angle, with every spec exposed. The rumors were naturally spot on, but that doesn't mean we're any less enthused about the 3.8-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera, and 3.5mm audio jack. Connectivity-wise we've got Europe-friendly HSDPA, GPS / A-GPS, 802.11g WiFi (we weren't clear on that one before), Bluetooth 2.0+ EDR and a microSD slot. On the software side there's TouchFLO 3D on top of Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro. There's also a front-facing VGA camera for video calls, 512MB of ROM and 288MB of RAM. HTC expects the 1350 mAh battery to score you 390 minutes of 3G talk and 450 ours of 3G standby, with 120 minute video calls just for kicks. The phone measures 12mm thick. Still no word on availability, price, or how you're ever going to stop us from cramming Android onto this thing.

I'm a big iPhone fan, but I must admit that I love this screen!
SOLD on hi-res screen grounds ALONE.
Still gonna wait for the HTC Dream, though. If it disappoints, I know the Touch HD will be there.
Also I can't believe the front facing camera does full VGA!! I can't wait to see how that works (frame rate wise). This phone has exceeded all my expectations and I haven't even touched it yet (no pun intended).
Ehh it is standard for GSM 3G video calls that the phones have a VGA camera, nothing new there!
Yeah but how many phones actually have a VGA display to show it?
Which do you think is more clearer: the Meizu M8 with a 3.4" LCD 720x480 or this 4" 480x800? I'm not really sure.
@Steven
A 3.4 inch with a res of 720 x 480 would be charper as the pixles are jammed in closer, but that doesn't mean it will be easier to read. I personally think that the 800 x 480 on a 3.8 inch screen is better for the fact that you have 80pixles more room to work with and its still extremely sharp.
I'd go with the 3.8" on this occasion, unless you seriously prefer the other phone better, try going into some shops and comparing - that's the only real way to find out which one you want (obviously gotta wait for the phones to come out first :P)

;)
High res screen is amazing, but resolution seems to be a non-issue when you have the proper OS. My iPhone (hate to say it) renders web pages better in some ways than my desktop screen. I'd prefer longer battery life and lower, better implemented resolution rendering than big-specs.
Love the tech of HTC, but 5 minutes with WinMo and I'm as frustrated as a Motorola-owner.
I'd also prefer a 2MP camera if it can take decent low-light shots. Megapixel marketing is insulting to the intelligence of those that know even a little bit about cameras.
I agree that the screen resolution is amazing, but I am somewhat saddened to see that it only has 65,000 colors. I'm anxious to see what the screen looks like in person.
I want One! Touch Pro wait!
YES! ;) A phone that will actually make Apple improve the specs of the next gen iPhone. It feels good to have the 3G iPhone with an 1st gen iPhone data plan (Unlimited data w/200 text)! I respect the Touch HD but the SE Xperia X1 will be my next phone along with my 3G iPhone. After havin' the iPhone for more then a year, I'm gettin' tired of all touch screens!
Yes, it is sweet. I am trying so hard to hold out until WiMo 7 comes out but HTC is trying very hard to sway me. My TyTN II is just fine... I can do it...
if only it had a slide out keyboard.
Say, "3G iPhone" one more time...
haha, the SEXperia X1. it's a SEXperience.
you are totally right !!
You cant imagine how much i'm glad I didn't rush to get the touch pro !!
I was stuck with my iphone till I get it, hopefully I can wait some more till christmas to get this beauty.
This will not only compete with the iphone 3G (Although I don't think we can actually compare them as this owns the iPhone in every way!) , but even the next iPhone (to be out in 2009)
Android, okay, but winmo is alright if you need it too. When's it coming out and who's carrying it! That's what I want to know.
How is tha " Texting " feature..since its not a SLIDE, do you still turn it sidways to text..??
same CPU as Diamond? Who want to waste few seconds for each 'touch'?
All the lag issues are fixed in cooked ROMs....
Its not good when you have to rely on your customers to provide you with a smooth OS.
None the less nice phone, too bad it has scungy touch buttons down the bottom. Nothing spectacular in the design department.
faster cpus generally draw more power. also, as the person above said, this has been fixed in cooked roms, though as the person below them said, HTC should be fixing this too. (too lazy to look up for names)
HTC already fixed this more than a month ago with the 1.93 ROM! Will you fanboys stop spreading BS please?
ok, sorry, sorry, not a fanboy. to the contrary, i LOVE HTC's new phones. just going by what other people said. jeez. ok diamond owners, go download that official ROM! (actually, HTC fixed lag far faster than Apple did...)
No longer an issue.
HTC's official ROM fixed this problem, as did cooked ROMS before it.
So you can cease and desist with the uninformed trolling now.
Beautiful
*GIG!* That's what iPhone needs.
I just got my touch diamond 2 months ago and I'm a little jealous on this one. They truly learnt from apple on how to make people want the next iteration of their devices, a 3.5 headphone jack and the new screen is (if battery life is decent) a big enhancement.
But what makes me happy: I see an Icon for stock courses in one of the galley photos, so there will be a new enhanced version for my touch diamond as well soon :)
Btw. WinMo in combination with the TouchFlo3D is a really good combination, no problems at all so far!
Thats probably the sexiest phone ever. Hopefully the full specs will be fantasmic. Does anyone know if WinMo 7 will be a free upgrade, Don't get me wrong I'm 90% sure it won't, That would make this the best phone ever.
HTC has been pretty good about updating Windows versions. I am pretty sure they are close enough with Microsoft that this and the Touch Diamond/Pro have had design influences (accelerometers, multitouch support, etc) to be in place for that software update. Windows Mobile 7 could make these devices outstanding.
The front cam makes me think WM7 will be available as an upgrade (WM7 has camera gesture recognition)
But, bare in mind WM7 has much different requirements, and will probably be powered by NVidia's Tegra beauty.
TareX, I think you are right on your prediction that Tegra is going to be a cornerstone with Win Mo 7. I do think Microsoft will stick with the tried and true "Works on various setups" mentality, Tegra is going to be a very powerful setup but I can't imagine Mobile 7 requiring more then the specs of this phone, look at the specs on low-end smartphones now... and the next version will be removing the boundary and making both smartphone and "pro" versions the same.
Yup WM7 is already running on current phones (like the Samsung i780).
See here http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/k6PMR15jrq6h8tJldt
@ Ike Turner: Windows Mobile 7 is not out yet, and that Samsung is running on WM6.1, nothing more.
@Saad
Did you bother watching the whole video before posting ?
I guess no...
Hey check out the product tour and you might be surprised to another htc device....
The HTC Touch 3G....
This is a momentous occasion, you realise.
I think we're looking at the first 'true' iPhone competitor running WM6.1 Pro. And by that I mean this is something that even the iPhone and Apple fanboys can agree with probably be a fantastic phone. Most of what have been deemed 'iPhone killers' are somewhat lacklustre, and HTC hasn't really created anything that can compete with the iPhone blow-by-blow (things like lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack, smaller-sized touchscreens, etc. tend to make people put them in slightly different leauges).
Exactly...
This is mine on Day 1.
Hopefully it comes to Sprint and/or AT&T. I'd prefer Sprint since their Simply Everything Plan is a lot more affordable to me and you really do get "everything" as opposed to AT&T or Verizon.
However I hear that AT&T 3G network is a lot better? Speaking of which does this phone support 3G in the US. I read somewhere that it doesn't...
Actually, I was thinking this would be a great Android phone. I'd love to see an instantly switchable WM/Android dual boot option. That would be keen.
in my experience, Sprint's 3G network is much better than AT&T's, at least where I live in the Bay Area, CA.
In regards to ATT v. Sprint, AT&T in my experience has the coverage, but Sprint has the speed, and, even pre-Iphone 3G, the available bandwidth to be reliable.
better than the iphone? yes.
and i own an iphone.
You probably haven't tried it yes, but the specs and the screen is way cooler than iPhone.
Better in what way ... the UI is nice but not that functional and you still see the dated navigation of WM6 popping up now and then.
I like the design a lot it has class, but ... windows mobile still sucks ass
Yes Wifi (of course) but it wasn't official before. I hope any UI/other issues from the Touch Pro have been ironed out. I.e. I hope its not just the same software in a different shell.
Me likes. Now I just have to decide: this or a Blackberry Bold. Basically, touchscreen or keyboard? But that 5mp camera is looking mighty sexy right now... I wonder if they are thinking of making a Touch Pro HD. Because that would be awesome.
You can have both (Touchscreen AND Keyboard) if the HTC Dream (running Android) turns out to be more decent than that prototype everyone's showcasing as the official "Dream/G1".
We'll all find out on the 23rd.
But the question is;
"is the Touch screen Glass capacitive or the everyday cheap GPS run of the mill Resistive?"
Hopefully/probably the same as the Diamond, which is glass capacitive.
No the Touch Diamond/Pro are Glass resistive (so it can work with a stylus, nails etc..)
oh u mean the like the cheap gps the iphone uses dam troll
YOYO, you have no brains, BRAINS!...
cheap GPS, as in $99-$149 wal-mart GPS units for the car/pocket...
Gosh, you just love the iBrick so much its always on your ...oh wait, you don't have one...
you don't understand why HTC (samsung and other WinMo device manufacturers) sticks with a resistive touchscreen and stylus input.. These manufacturers all hail from Asia and most of their products are first (of course) intended for their Asian market.
Since countries in Asia uses a diverse alphabet (mostly different for each country) and most of their words are not spelled with letters but with 'Word Blocks' (meaning 1 word=1 symbol) and/or syllable blocks, they do not use the standard Roman Alphabet (aka the QWERTY keyboard) as a form of input.. Most Chinese (Japanese and Korean as well) still use a 'graffiti' style character recognition , or Caligraphy Input, which (for obvious reasons) USES A STYLUS.
this is also the reason why HTC (et al) sticks with Resistive screens.. because, Styluses (as well as fingers) work well on resistive screens while capacitive screens works ONLY with fingers..
No, there are versions of the Capacitive Touch screen that has a flexible glass substrate that includes a resistive layer matrix under / or over the glass that responds to pressure...
So you can have best of both worlds. Stylus and Capacitive touch.
No, you wouldn't get the best of both worlds, you'd get two different input methods, making the screen dimmer, less responsive (because it would take more time figuring out which touch receptor you are using at that point), and more expensive.
Not to mention much more bulky.
Wow...that is a good point. I never thought about that in regards to the Asian market not wanting capacitive touchscreen. That being said, I find it near impossible to use a qwerty on-screen keyboard on a resistive screen. So, I guess the only real option that leaves us qwerty folks with is the awesome iPhone touchscreen or the awesome physical keyboard on phones like the HTC Touch Pro... I really liked my old HTC Hermes keyboard, and I really love my iPhone keyboard, but I cannot type on the LG Vu or the original HTC Touch...
It's resistive. Hence the stylus.
Though I know it is an overused cliche, but this actually does seem like it is an iPhone killer, at last spec wise. Good to see Apple get some competition to push the technological boundaries.
Argh! I just know that the first thing I'm gonna read on my Touch Pro when I get it is an Engadget post about how HTC just released a Touch HD Pro with a physical keyboard !!!
Dude that's what i was thinking. I might have to wait and see what happens.
2 things I want from a true competitor:
- glass screen
- multi touch support
It's a glass screen (like the Diamond/Pro).
Whta do you want multi-touch for besides zooming in/out of pictures (and the browser , double tapping is better for one handed usage though IMO) ?
Multitouch is hardly usable on the iPhone. I'd say borderline useless.
Unless you're playing the piano, chances are you'll NEVER EVER use it. Oh and it's easier to double tap a photo than to pinch it.
I'm finding I use the double tap to zoom on my iPhone rather than multi-touch. Its simply too troublesome to use multi-touch with one hand. Multi-touch is the future yes...but I think its the future for larger touchscreens.
As long as it runs WinMo, I doubt it'll kill the iPhone.
That is the pro/con of it running Windows...you can put anything on it! WM5, WM6.1, Android or WM7. XDA Developers already got a slow Win XP running on a PDA. In that aspect, it beats the iPhone already.
@mphayvanh, the devs over at XDA have gotten Android running via emulation. They can't directly boot the Android OS, so it's really slow.
what carriers seem like possibilities?
All of them, given time. I have a 6800 from Alltel and want to get the Touch Pro (or Touch HD Pro...hint hint...) when they (or Verizon, in a few months) have it.
Same here. Was waiting for the Touch Pro. Now waiting on the Touch HD Pro. 640x480 is good. 800x480 is better.
Aaaaaah! I want to edit my posts! That was in regard to the post by Xenoterranos.
With the price of the current HTC Touch Diamond, I would venture to say that the HTC Touch HD would be close to a grand.
Stick with the Touch Diamond.
http://www.jr.com/htc/pe/HTC_TOUCHDIAMON/
That thing looks HOT! However I still have to play around with it and read up on some reviews but YEA.... I think I might be upgrading my Tytn II!
If anybody is in the NYC area, J & R tends to get lots of new release HTC stuff when they hit the market. So keep your eyes open!
If you made the iPhone as thick as this phone and threw in all those extras. This phone wouldn't be an iPhone killer. Only reason why this phone ends up in that category is its BIG enough to fit all those enhanced specs.
As thick as? You mean a whopping 0.4mm thicker than the iPhone?
You should be yelling at Apple for gimping the iPhone so much just to make it 0.4mm thinner than the competition.
This phone is thinner than the iPhone 3G by 0.5 mm, and has the same width and height, plus a larger screen.
hahaha suck it iphone, a decent competitor!!!
i wonder if this will only be offered by telstra on one of their terrible value plans (a la htc touch diamond) in Australia when / if it arrives?....
Just add a pull out qwerty keyboard and SVGA output and I'm sold!
So what are the chances we will see this on Sprint and its CDMA network?
Slim to none. AT&T will buy exclusivity rights to it if the phone really is as good as people are thinking it will be.
NO chance you'll see it in CDMA (Sprint/Verizon). ALL good phones go GSM. I'm not a fanboy of AT&T or the other GSM carriers, it's a simple matter of fact. Tilt? Xperia X1? Touch HD? Asus Galaxy7? iPhone? All GSM. In the future? All GSM. It's the way of the world! Verizon has the best customer satisfaction and the worst phones. Odd, but true! So, just stick with your Treo and Razr and enjoy your customer service. Those on GSM get the toys.
Is AT&T's network BETTER than the other two though?
I could care less about customer service. I rarely deal with them. Yes Sprint's CS is a nightmare but it's not like I talk with them everyday regarding my phone.
I'm hoping this comes to Sprint cuz their plans are more friendly to my wallet however I'll willing jump to AT&T if it's CONFIRMED to be an AT&T exclusive.
The previous 2 posters sound fairly certain that it will so I'll just wait and see.
All I know is that by Christmas this year I'll either be unwrapping a HTC Touch Pro or an HTC Touch HD. Either way life will be SWEET!
Bil, that's BS.
Sprint, being CDMA, was the first one to get the HTC Touch.
Sprint was the first one to get the HTC Mogul (Titan/PPC6800).
Sprint was the first one to get the HTC Touch Diamond.
Sprint will also be the first one to get the HTC Touch Pro come next month.
All of the aforementioned phones were/are/will be considered as the best phones of their respective times, and they all went to Sprint first.
ATT can keep the iPhone piece of crap for itself.
OK so I have a very important question
I'm looking to buy one of these phones soon
Is it possible to put Android on this?
Will Android really be worth it?
Is Windows Mobile any good? Any new versions coming soon?
Is there any touch screen phone I should be keeping an eye on?
Thats all I can think of now :p
To answer your question, Android is a future release so no one can really say what it's worth yet, but I can tell you that Windows Mobile is definitely worth it. Here's why.. there's a huge community that keep creating blizzards of (free) applications for it, and the good folks over at xda-developers will make sure your Windows Mobile HTC phone always stays updated. You're low ranked because there are so many touchscreen phones out there (have been for a long tome) and you're even commenting on an article about one.. Just Googling could have answered all your questions.
Something the iPhone should be aspiring to be (specs wise that is) in fact this is also very nice looking. Shame it runs Windows Mow-down mobile usability.
This hardware with Android and US 3G support, I'd buy one instantly...
WinMo 6.x doesn't need 288 MB of RAM, I think this one is prepared for WM7 upgrade next year
Hubba Hubba!! I want!!
The only thing missing is a physical keypad...not the whole QWERTY but just the numeric keypad...will be interesting to see how it will be for typing texts on this beauty. I have resisted the iphone because of it but the additional features on this will make it hard to resist!
Although it doesn't have the curves that make the iPhone 3G feel smaller then it is which is a little bit of space for equipment, it is only 12mm thick versus iPhone 3Gs 12.3mm (I think the original one was 11.6 so the original was a little bit smaller but had so many fewer specs). So, that argument doesn't work.
All I need is one of these attached in a HTC Universal style machine.
YES PLEASE.
I'll stick with my touch pro for the moment though.
My fingers are tapered with the fingernails always extending over the tips, so capacitive screens are out for me.
This looks sweet.
I almost entered my credit card number to buy a Touch Pro, then engadget's RSS alert made me stop to look :D
wha?
Did anyone see a stylus on this?
Finally! A smart phone that has a bigger screen and higher res than my old Dell PDA! I might just have to get one.
Great phone, but it makes my decision all the more harder now, Current contenders are; Xperia X1, Touch Pro, This, or a future version with sliding keypad (TouchHD Dual).
Arrrrgh!

I'm sorry - am I missing where it says the total storage so I can ditch my ipod?!
