XPERIA X1 gets demoed in Sony Ericsson webcast

Those following the XPERIA X1's every move no doubt caught this as it happened earlier today, but for those that missed it, the Inexperia website has now posted most of Sony Ericsson's latest webcast, in which the X1's interface gets shown off to a far greater extent than we've seen previously. That includes a look at the phone's much talked about panel system and a glimpse of its video-playing abilities, plus some expected gushing about the phone's design, which is described as feeling like a well-tailored suit. Head on past the break for the video courtesy of Inexperia, and look for the whole thing to be available direct from Sony Ericsson on September 17th.

Wow are u guys stupid? he had the things preloaded in background...
thats 9+ applications running at the same time... if u have seen
other new vids where the guy turns the phone on and then previews it
the reaction time is super fast

lol HTC touch pro looks like a crappy x1 copy.. slower.. less functions... ugly
Exactly my thoughts. The performance was REALLY sluggish.
Worst. Demo, Ever.
Learn. To, Punctuate.
Man, this phone have so much hyper, but in this presentation, it looked to DULL....
IMHO this thing is one giant ball of lag.
In response to the guy having apps running in the background, and calling us stupid, maybe you should be calling that fruity fellow who relates a phone to a suit stupid -- for trying to show off something that takes 6 seconds for the god damn screen to rotate.
All of HTC's phones (including this one) that they have put out in the past year have had serious lag problems.
Wanna know why? They're all based on the Qualcomm MSM chipset series. These chips are known to have serious 2d and 3d graphics acceleration problems. Thanks, but no thanks. No more qualcomm based devices for me. You guys can spend $900 on this polished turd and dig your own graves :). As far as the TV out thing, that sucks as well.
did you even watch the other video? obviously the rotate is almost instant...
Qualcomm isnt to blame, well, its difficult.
Qualcomm chips are sold standalone, the drivers are sold like accessories to hardware devs. HTC has to buy media drivers in addition to the actual chipset (atleast from what i understand)
With that said, to go around and say its due to qualcomm is wrong, WM still runs the same damn kernel since the beginning of forever (ce5?), i hope wm7 will be a push, but it will also need new devices without the issues these have. This ultimately boils down to the old apple vs pc conversation; as long as pc's (windows) dont have a minimal hardware requirement, they will look bad. Yeah, winmo can run with a 200mhz chipset, but can it run well? It can run with 528, but well? Do we need 1ghz for this to rotate the screen in under a second? Desktop windows does it pretty fast, even with a subpar graphics chip, maybe nvidia can help in the future.
Im on a rant... point being, the whole system is broken, from winmoOS to hardware to software. It isnt organized in a way that can maximize the users e"Xperi"ence. Im in no way mad because i know we are on the verge of a BIG fix (sorry, but thanks to the iphone getting these devs off their lazy @ss). Spread the blame a little bit, it'll make you feel better, trust me. :)
I watched a couple of other demos, the one feature that looks nice is the touch to focus. I've always wanted to be able to focus my cell phone camera.
haha i laugh at people who use iphone... its all hype... but in that regard they did figure out the trick in decieving alot of people into buying overpriced stuff... the phone is average... nothing special.. all of its features are stripped down to run faster (no flash or java for starters) camera sucks, and ipod touch's supposed "long battery life" is second gen tech... NA just gets the crap end of technology.. and all it take are some fancy commercials and everyone thinks its cutting edge. I do agree that microsoft needs to revamp its software to make it faster by removeing useless crap instead of just covering it up with more code... but once it does that apple will be left behind with its overpriced crap and we will finally see some great new devices
This is just another one of those ridiculous comments. "iPhones are shite, WinMo is much better but they just haven't made a good product yet." Does that even make sense? I think this looks great and I am dying for some iPhone competition, but at the moment it's simply the most powerful unit out there.
The iPhone 3G is one of the cheapest smartphones available (both contract and contract-free). There are only a handful of subsidized phones that are less expensive than the iPhone 3G. If you talk about unlocked phones, any good phone is over $600. Luckily HTCs are being picked up left and right by carriers, so I don't need to pay the premiums anymore.
Also, I can understand if you think that the iPhone is lacking in features, but you have to admit that it's the smoothest running smartphone available. That's something that a lot of people can live with. I've always been comtemplating whether or not I need excel (editting not just viewing) on my phone. I would be on the iPhone in an instant if I didn't "need" excel. Although it looks like HTC HD to the rescue!
BTW, someone posted your video on howardforums. Although I was surprised that the demo was pretty fast (definately looked like one of the faster phones considering it's windows mobile), it turned out that as you start running a couple applications and closing them, the phone gets slower and slower. I know about the windows mem drain issue, but apparently this occurred a lot faster with the Xperia because of the way the panels worked. The only solution I know of right now is to reset the phone. I really hope Windows mobile 7 fixes the memory issue. I would say that is still the worst flaw for the OS.
i never said winmo havent come out with a good products, all the new HTC are much better then the iphone... including the x1, winmo gives users the ability to add more and sometimes thats more then the phone should handle and it lags... apple gives ppl only so much, no more no less, so people cant put enough stuff on it to slow it down... not because its so amazingly fast... but because its so restricted.. i DID say once winmo gets rid of its redundant code it will be so next gen people will forget the iphone ever existed... it will be like tape players...
Make it all black or all metal!... currently it just looks bad imho!
Wow - this video massacred my opinion of this phone. Thankfully, the unwired video above is much more what I was expecting and I am excited again. I am an iPhone owner so I am tied in but I will definitely be convincing one of my mates to buy one of these so I can play with it!
it's reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally slow, look at when he slides out the keyboard at 7:40-7:50, i think it takes him about 15 seconds for his icons to load after screen orientation changes...
is it that weak?
It looks like he has a VNC icon running in the task bar anyone else notice that?
where abouts in the vid is that?
wonder if android will pop up on this device.. as for winmo7. c'mon its microsoft they won't fix it they just release it and it will be same old laggy crap. Its a real shame.
Iphone v. Winmo. Yawn.
If it had a xenon flash, increased mega pixel camera (5 minimum!), and faster interface, it would be a contender for the smartphone of 08, even though past experience with Sony products/support has been disappointing. Until then I'm holding onto my trusty N95. Watch out for Nokia though... they have a few nice patents up their sleeve that may make them the clear leader in 09.
Agreed with most posters though - terrible interview, and reinforces my hesitation with Sony.
i too was excited about this phone, but that publicity video was super lame. that's the best crew they could come up with to explain the features of the phone??? was he embarassed that he knew the speed of the processor? yeah, be ashamed douche. you're not going to be bangn' the chick next to you anyways so just tell us the facts. the unwired review is soo much better though. makes me think, if unwired had a better phone than these guys, was SE NOT running with the latest build of the phone's software??? considering how poor SE's video was, i wouldn't think it's beyond SE to screw that critical detail up.
though it doesn't have a keyboard, i'm also considering the htc touch pro and samsung omnia, which hopefully will come out soon with US 3G. anyone willing to take a gander at which is the superior phone?
I need to buy a suit.
Contrary to this comment or post I am a Sony customer and fan of their products,
First of all Sony Ericsson is waiting way too long to come out with this product.
Second, could they have sent the worst representative to talk about their up and coming, not yet released product, that so many are wiaing for? If he has been using it for a year as he states, why does he look like a bumbling idiot demonstrating it? Poor, poor marketing and judgement on the company's part of creating or increasing the hype.
Third, to add injury to insult on the part of Sony Ericsson, did you notice the amount of lagging time during his demonstration? There doesn't seem to be enough processing power to handle all these "desktops,"... err umm "Icons,"...umm "panels."
I wanted this phone and have been waiting for its release, but after careful research, tech communities like Engadget, and countless others, I'll call it a day for the SE X1. I thank all of you for creating and participating in these forums your neutral stand as website forums and honest opinions as participaters inthese forums make it easier to make an informed decision.
Therefore, I think I'll buy me an iPhone. Albeit is not the best phone and has room for improvement, I believe what it offers is better than most and the possiblities to expanding the exisiting phone is possible with some software upgrades.
Sony Ericsson has failed to realize, they've lost their chance with this one. Their prolonging has put the phone in a state of retirement. With the digital world expanding or evolving at a rate of approximately 10-12 years per one year, the X1 has already reached its peek and is showing it (all that lagging and where is the WOW! factor?). It's sad that they haven't noticed.
I'm a Sony Fan but things are changing. Thanks for the video (Reginald) and all of you for your help in making my decision.
