AOC introduces 17-inch V17 LCD monitor: 12-millimeters thin

Update: Resolution is 1,440 x 900, there's a 5,000:1 contrast ratio, a 200 cd/m2 brightness and a VGA input is included.
AOC Slims Down with the V17 Monitor
As small a footprint on your desk as on the environment
Fremont, Calif., September 15, 2008 – As technology has evolved, smaller has become "better;" however, when it comes to displays consumers want a small impact on space, without sacrificing screen size. AOC has designed the V17 monitor to meet both needs, a 17" monitor that boasts less than 12 millimeters in depth, but still has space for a built-in webcam.
The V17 provides consumers with an incredibly thin and sleek LCD monitor that offers both the style and design they have been looking for, yet still at a price which rivals major competitors. Its thin design means less space taken up on any desk, as well as less materials necessary for its manufacturing. The V17 has as small a footprint in the office as it has on the environment with its low power consumption and 100% recycled pulp mold packaging.
"We are continuously working towards meeting and exceeding consumer demands in today's market, they want smaller displays with bigger screens, better performance, but less impact on the environment and incredible styling," said Jerry Chou, Product Manager, AOC. "The V17 touches on each of these points as the first product in a line of incredibly thin monitors, and is leading the way for our WLED ultra-thin technology," added Chou.
With the screen on or off, the V17 leaves no angle unnoticed with a transparent outline, glass base, integrated speakers and rear inputs. From a technology standpoint the V17 offers a built-in digital microphone and video conferencing software to go along with its integrated VGA webcam.
The V17 boasts an MSRP of $199.99 and will be available for purchase at the end of 2008.

Who gives a shit if its 12 mm at the top if its an inch and a half at the bottom and has a 4 inch base? thin panel make sense for portable devices, desktop installations will see drastically diminished returns. As we see less bulk material (less product physical volume and mass) ideally it will lower prices, but thiness is not virtue enough on its own.

Right...one down.
ntlam @ Sep 17th 2008 12:11AM
OK. 12mm at the thinnest part. FULL STOP.
Gikero @ Sep 17th 2008 12:13AM
Wow, I wonder how much heat it will generate with it being so thin.
Eagleeyez @ Sep 17th 2008 12:20AM
Well i had a dell vostro 1500 with an LG LCD panel and got a replacement one with an AOC panel in it. side by side the AOC panel was garbage. i guess i cant compare a laptop panel and a desktop.....

Who cares? It's not like it makes any difference on your desk compared to your 20mm thick LCD... also, the stand is obnoxiously wide. I'd rather get a nice, big, 19 or 22 incher than this for $200.

The stand is no bigger than any other monitor stand. With the way my desk/computer is set up and its location I see my monitor from the side all of the time and its thickness drives me insane. It's so 2004. This shit right here is from the future.
Lay it on me.

"obnoxiously wide"? Exactly how thin would you like it to be? Physics (i.e. gravity and center of mass) necessitate a certain amount of width to maintain stability. That whole "staying upright, not toppling over" thing is kind of important, no?

That is one sexy screen right there. I want it.
Christian @ Sep 17th 2008 2:35AM
Please release a 24" size later on! Bigger is better too!

I think the design is really nice. Don't really care about 17" lcd monitor tho... I mean... 17" has stopped being interesting for many years.
HopHead @ Sep 17th 2008 4:38AM
What's up the this design trend?
Vista like glass edge and a dark red shiny tone to the plastic.
"Everything" produced right now tends to look like this.
Samsung and philips tv's, keyboards and whatever else.
I'm out of luck, because I really don't like it.
Daza @ Sep 17th 2008 9:48AM
The "crystal" effect is very Samsung esque. But I am glad that more manufacturers, particularly ones who make cheap products are taking a greater interest in design and form. I currently have an AOC 22" and 19" which are great, reliable monitors but are just your average black looking screens.

aoc 的工业设计确实越来越好了。尽管之前一直是以低价和代工出名,但是近年来我们还是渐渐看到了aoc 在工业设计方面的进步,造型慢慢开始让人赏心悦目了,坚持、坚持-----

Where I live desktops monitors less than 20" are unsellable. Maybe some 19" if they've got something special, but 17" are going the way of the freakin' dodo.
