So it's really no big secret at this point, but we've now received confirmation that T-Mobile will be unveiling its first
Android handset -- presumably the
Dream, G1, or whatever they decide to call it -- at a press event in New York City
on September 23. The event is a whole shindig, too, kicking off in the morning and featuring "presentations from T-Mobile, Google and other company executives" followed by hands-ons with the real deal. Naturally, we'll be on hand in full force, so stay tuned!

Serial 8-Ball Mouse @ Sep 16th 2008 3:27PM
Yeah... Android itself is ugly as hell, it seems.
andrew @ Sep 16th 2008 3:39PM
lol, and then everyone loved the nano after it was released
jorvay @ Sep 16th 2008 4:13PM
People love the new Nano?
Nick @ Sep 16th 2008 5:08PM
It might be ugly, but at least we'll be free from Microsoft and Apple. http://htcsource.com

Ever tried to look at yourself in a bleedin' mirror?
Platinum_Skeet @ Sep 16th 2008 2:52PM
Man everyones going to have a new HTC but Verizon soon... =(
skyshock21 @ Sep 16th 2008 2:58PM
Fuck Verizon! :)
Platinum_Skeet @ Sep 16th 2008 3:02PM
lmao
Atlbabylife @ Sep 16th 2008 3:09PM
Verizon already has a HTC
Kiteless @ Sep 16th 2008 2:53PM
As much as I like my iPhone (Classic) I am really looking forward to seing what comes out of tghe Dream and Android. I thinK ai m ready to move away from AT&T, but certainly not ready to move to T-Mobile. Maybe if Verizon got their hands on this thing and didn't lock it down to much. A guy can... DREAM... I guess.
-K
Quix @ Sep 16th 2008 3:04PM
Verizon *not* completely destroying something by locking it down with its own branded crap? Keep dreamin'...
miky @ Sep 16th 2008 7:13PM
Why not T-Mobile? What's wrong with it?
Windzilla @ Sep 16th 2008 2:58PM
huzzah!
I have been advising friends to hold out on iphone purchases just because dreams, storms, diamonds and who knows what were on the horizon.
hurray for choice
also maybe soon we can get a recent version of android running natively on a nokia n8x0 then i will be in gadget hog heaven
Eddie W @ Sep 16th 2008 4:20PM
Here's hoping there a version of android for the 770. I have one kicking around that could use a supported OS. Speaking of which, the lack of support for the 770 has been one reason I never bought the 810 and people still say the 810 is quirky - hasn't Nokia had long enough to do bug fixes?
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Sep 16th 2008 9:11PM
Anybody know when we're going to be able to get our hands on one in a store?
Benson @ Sep 17th 2008 1:34AM
Well, the N800 did come in between there, and it's still being supported. Word from Nokia is that they learned their lesson over the 770 support-dropping; you know they came out with a version of OS2008 for it?
But I doubt Android will go back to hardware that old, at least for a while; the community people who'd be doing the device-specific work will more likely want to focus on the more powerful N8x0. And of course, the next generation of tablets will be OMAP3, for which TI is opening the specs, greatly easing the work.
kccboy2004 @ Sep 16th 2008 2:58PM
i am getting one

Finally, we long-suffering t-mobile users have the upper hand!
Quy @ Sep 16th 2008 3:04PM
Man, for years we've been lacking in the hardware department. Loyal Tmo customers rejoice! I'm wondering what became of that 17th presale date that was being tossed around.
Knives_Out @ Sep 16th 2008 3:09PM
yup .. it's been a long long time. I've thought about bailing out on tmo so many times.
can't wait!
T-Mo'Bull @ Sep 16th 2008 3:31PM
You'll only have the Upper-hand when it's the 2nd Gen or later version of Android - and when a phone (Hardware) worthy of Android is bearing the Android soul - let's not even mention T-Mobile and their pathetically slow attempt to roll out 3G across the USA?
I was on the T-Mobile boat for a while - but one can only wait so long before you must go else-where.
Sorry T-Mobile - do something to show me that you love me - make me fall in love with you again, and maybe, MAYBE - I'll take you back!
Maciek @ Sep 16th 2008 5:56PM
To T-Mo'Bull...
Very good statement... Because at&t was SO fast...SO FAST they they decided to roll out their 3G on existing GSM frequencies which now is backfiring at them as both networks must co-exist on the same frequency...WHICH in this case means that the more people blabber on their phone, the more their 3G network suffers and downgrades your data to EDGE. That's the way to do it...uhuh uhuh
bibhas @ Sep 16th 2008 2:59PM
So, is the UI going to be as is, or is the Dream going to sport a pimped up version of Android? Any Guesses?
chefgon_ign @ Sep 16th 2008 6:15PM
Considering the hardware itself is an almost completely unchanged concept device, I highly doubt there are going to be many tweaks on the software side, either. T-Mo will write an application for MyFaves on the Home Screen and call it a day.
poopy_pants @ Sep 16th 2008 3:01PM
AWESOME!!!
Hopefully it's not the ugly thing in the photo. Either way this is cool. I already have T-Mobile and have been waiting on a sweet Android phone for an upgrade. My current Nokia is on its last legs!
GON @ Sep 16th 2008 3:02PM
Excellent. Let's see what this thing can really do.
bob sakamano @ Sep 16th 2008 3:02PM
does it come with the cheetah (or is that tiger?) print pouch like the background?
CJ @ Sep 17th 2008 8:18AM
I believe you'll find that it is in fact, Lepoard.
Cheetahs tend to have more solid colour spots, whereas lepoards usually sport two-or-more colour rosettes.
udub @ Sep 16th 2008 3:04PM
I hope this event really delivers (confirms?) the details (like pricing, data plans, preloaded apps, etc.) and not just everything we pretty much know so far.
Either way, I can't wait. It's about time for official-ness.
Nitecrawlah2 @ Sep 16th 2008 3:05PM
Looks good. I'm an AT&T guy, but I've always been curious about the whole Android project and this device.
diego @ Sep 16th 2008 3:06PM
From the picture above, I would say that the device may be either huge, or too small buttoned. OS probably great though.
Justin @ Sep 16th 2008 3:09PM
Exciting times we live in.
Now, how exactly do we go about installing Android on HTC Touches, Moto RAZRs, Samsung Instincts and Apple iPhones?
tom @ Sep 16th 2008 3:11PM
FINALLY.
Will buy this hopefully will use gears and wifi together so I dont need a data plan.
Greg @ Sep 16th 2008 3:13PM
You'll be on hand for the hands-on, eh?
Randy @ Sep 16th 2008 3:18PM
Damn, and I ordered my iPhone on Thurs. Oh well.
HalfJoey @ Sep 16th 2008 3:31PM
Verzion needs to release the HTC Touch Pro before the Android for me to stick with them. If that doesn't happen im jumping ship to T-Mobile.
7on @ Sep 16th 2008 4:51PM
Go ahead and jump, the water's nice. Plus we're GSM = most cell phones in the world.
Jeremy @ Sep 16th 2008 3:32PM
I WANT THE ANDROID. I JUST DON'T WANT THIS UGLY PHONE. ONLY IF IT WAS THE HTC TOUCH HD WITH ANDROID THEN IT WOULD BE GREAT. SORRY GOOGLE BUT THIS HEADSET IS AWFUL. I'LL JUST JOIN THE CROWD AND GET A IPHONE.
andrew @ Sep 16th 2008 3:42PM
if you think that headset is big you should see the phone! wow! (idiot)
jorvay @ Sep 16th 2008 4:17PM
If you think the headset is big, you should see ALL CAPS WRITING IN BLOG COMMENTS!!!!!
Nando @ Sep 16th 2008 3:39PM
THIS IS HOT!!!
paul @ Sep 16th 2008 3:46PM
Exciting!
Virtuous @ Sep 16th 2008 4:03PM
TMo must be tired of customers defecting to AT&T for the iPhone.
Benson @ Sep 17th 2008 1:33AM
You know until the 3G iPhone, T-mobile customers were the one group who had no reason to go to ATT? Same data quality, much better rates, and no need to sign a new contract. (Unless visual voicemail is really that desired; I've never had an iPhone or ATT service, so I don't know what I'm missing...)
Lefty @ Sep 18th 2008 12:20PM
I don't think, based on either the OS or the industrial design of the device, that this is going to prove to be a compelling argument for them to stay...
