Safari feels snappier!
Erik @ Sep 16th 2008 1:13AM
Screw safari, go firefox.
Totalfixation @ Sep 16th 2008 1:27AM
Too bad you can't say go "chrome"
Conor Kirkpatrick @ Sep 16th 2008 1:28AM
Screw Firefox, go Opera.
justanotherperson @ Sep 16th 2008 1:30AM

Zeth Ethereal @ Sep 16th 2008 1:36AM

mymaclife @ Sep 16th 2008 3:21AM
I like Coca Cola but what's this little taste test got to do with 10.5.5?
oneofmany @ Sep 16th 2008 3:28AM
@Totalfixation: have you actually used Chrome? I have for a couple of days on a daily basis even decided to test some of the web apps that we are working on. Well not only is it nowhere near complete but it actually feels more like and alpha release than a beta. But then again I am one of the people who still remember that a beta is a software with all of it's features that needs a removal of some bugs and maybe trimming of features that are too broken to fix in a timely manner.
On the other hand you have Safari which is definitely a final release and a heck of a lot more stable.
So why exactly do you think that I would miss being able to use Chrome, you adolescent fanboy?
Nas @ Sep 16th 2008 3:48AM
@oneofmany
I think he was referring to the term "chroming," and that it's too bad you can't say "go chrome" because it would be interpreted as telling someone to go and sniff paint.
So chill...
oh and here ya go: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=chroming
Kizorblade @ Sep 16th 2008 4:11AM
Chrome is on OS X? Last time I checked, the Google guys said that it would take a few months to port.
a ham sandwich @ Sep 16th 2008 9:42AM
i notice the "graphics update" too! window minimizing and things of that sort are much smoother!
w00fy @ Sep 16th 2008 9:50AM

v3xx @ Sep 16th 2008 1:10AM
wow ooooold news engadget.
v3xx @ Sep 16th 2008 1:32AM
btw werent they supposed to release safari 4 with this update?
Kizorblade @ Sep 16th 2008 4:13AM
I think it's going to come out when Snow Leopard does, or soon after/before it, for Leopard users at least.
Jash Sayani @ Sep 16th 2008 5:36AM
Well, thats on MacWorld Expo 09. SnowLeopard release with Safari 4. And Leopard 10.5.7 with security updates and Safari 4.
Leopard 10.5.6 will release within 2 months. Thats by November end.
paul @ Sep 16th 2008 6:49PM
Old news, and also news that isn't related to gadgets. It's software news.
THJ @ Sep 16th 2008 1:11AM
Addresses an issue in which some Macs could unexpectedly power on at the same time each day.
...???
calvinki @ Sep 16th 2008 3:04AM
I will check and see if you have set up a auto startup.
Go to the Apple icon > System Pref > Energy Saver > Schedule
ronchande @ Sep 16th 2008 3:47AM
Happens to me every day at 2.00 a.m. :). Let's see what will happen tonight !
Daniel Smith @ Sep 16th 2008 1:12AM
Wow you guys really aren't with it today huh?
clearance @ Sep 16th 2008 1:16AM
wow amazing gadget.
Olivier @ Sep 16th 2008 1:23AM
Just installed... working fine.
Ben @ Sep 16th 2008 1:24AM
Yeah iclarified.com posted this hours and hours ago
keith @ Sep 16th 2008 1:42AM
Finally, my damn Mac has been turning its self on around 5:00 everyday for some time now... I've obviously never been able to figure out what was going on.
Dyranios @ Sep 16th 2008 1:51AM
Yeah, mine was downloading porn through bittorrent as well, tens of gigabytes of the stuff.....
d3bruts1d @ Sep 16th 2008 5:33AM
@Dyranios thanks for that. Almost made me spit out my coffee.
JJ @ Sep 16th 2008 1:41AM
oh my...
Silly readers... You complain when there is TOO much Apple news, but berate Engadget when they are HOURS late on a routine OSX update???
I really don't get you guys.
I promised myself I'd stop reading the comments...
"Bad Boy! Bad Boy! Go to a corner now."
qwertyone @ Sep 16th 2008 2:07AM
Absolute silence on Chrome because engadget is supposedly returning to its focus on gadgets and gadgets alone, but an OS X update qualifies as news? That wouldn't have anything to do with OS X being an Apple product now, would it?
bolezhinkov @ Sep 16th 2008 2:40AM
wah wah who cares - its something to read about computers and stuff, good enough for me.
jared @ Sep 16th 2008 6:26AM
10.5.5 update = update for gadget
chrome update = update for software
Cerberus @ Sep 16th 2008 10:01AM
Here's more for Apple fan-boys... to STFU that is:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/articles/core-ipod-invented-by-furniture-salesman/2008/09/10/1220857618764.html
....and they glorify Steve Jobs?? Douches.
Zak @ Sep 16th 2008 11:40AM
quertyone: So can I take that to mean you didn't see all the Zune 3.0 updates on Engadget today too? I don't see how that would qualify as an Apple product, so your complaint is null and void, thanks for playing.
Cerberus: Kramer invented a digital music player, not an iPod. If you aren't a total idiot, you will recall that other digital music players existed before the iPod did, so this has nothing to do with Apple.
Matt @ Sep 16th 2008 2:55AM
Does this include any fixes for iChat? I've been having major issues with mine crashing lately, especially when video chatting. Also has anyone running Firefox 3 on OSX having issues with it crashing after being open for a long period of time?
Foodie_Monster @ Sep 16th 2008 3:10AM
Working just fine on my Hackintosh and my MacBook. Good stuff.
webterractive @ Sep 16th 2008 4:31AM
I recommend this update it does everything that it says though you'll never know, cause I've never encountered any of the problems...
webterractive @ Sep 16th 2008 4:32AM
If only Microsoft released updates like these for Windows XP, then we'd be in business...
Mark @ Sep 16th 2008 6:01AM
This shit belongs on tuaw.
Zak @ Sep 16th 2008 11:41AM
And the Zune 3.0 updates belong on MS blogs and not here. Right?
ThePengwin @ Sep 16th 2008 8:36PM
@Zak
The Zune is a gadget? a Mac is a computer?
the operative word of gadget in engadget kinda leads me to believe the zune has a place here, wheras mac sofware should go to a mac blog.
Kizorblade @ Sep 17th 2008 3:46AM
Zak was referring to the software updates, which are just software. So what place do they have here?
Tadas Simokaitis @ Sep 16th 2008 6:20AM
Isn't exposè running a tad bit slower than before the update?
Baz @ Sep 16th 2008 8:32AM
For a Company (and old school fan base) with The Unbearable Lightness of Smugness about its computers, OS and software, Apple certainly does seem to be capable of pumping out regular (and massive) Updates to its users.
It certainly makes Microsoft's 'Patch Tuesdays' look pretty incidental - but you're unlikely to see that ever advertised in the 'Hi, I'm a Mac. Hi, I'm a PC' commercials....
Its a disappointment, of course - suggesting that OSX (and their own software) is just as sketchy and open to hacker challenges as Vista - but its also time for Stevo and his traditional Macoyltes to accept that they're 'not in Kansas anymore' and their products have challenges.
Zak @ Sep 16th 2008 11:44AM
You're right, Apple shouldn't fix bugs. They should just ignore them instead, that makes much more sense. Oh wait, I see what the problem is - you're a moron. That explains it.
Kizorblade @ Sep 16th 2008 12:49PM
I don't get it. So you're saying that Apple has said that it's all stable etc yet it still releases updates, hence making it rather hypocritical?
Oh puhlease. OS X was designed by humans, for humans. It's bound to have bugs and shit in it. With every fix you make, more bugs pop up. This is the case with nearly all major forms of software. 10.4 had updates, 10.3 updates, XP, Vista, Word, whatever! They all had updates, even if it was small, itty bitty ones.
Steve Flockhart @ Sep 16th 2008 8:56AM
Keep us posted on how it holds up....and I know you will.
N A @ Sep 16th 2008 2:01PM
Just installed from 10.5.4 through software update and said it could not load from the media.
Now computer won't boot.
Kevin @ Sep 16th 2008 1:04PM
Installed yesterday and since then its running fine. Haven't had any problems. This update does to the 'double restart' thing, where it will restart and while restarting it restarts again.
brujo garza @ Sep 16th 2008 2:24PM
