Darth 64 mega-mod results in portable N64 that breathes funny
We wouldn't go so far as to say that the apprentice has become the teacher, but over three years after modder extraordinaire Benjamin Heckendorn crafted his very own portable Nintendo 64, along comes one of his dedicated followers with another take on things. The Darth 64 is easily one of the most convoluted console hacks we've ever seen, utilizing bits and pieces from an N64, PSOne, GameCube and a Lazer Doodle. Somehow or another, hailrazer was able to actually make those seemingly unrelated components work together to form a "handheld" N64 console -- one that's battery powered, no less. Maybe they should have just slapped in a GameCube controller instead... the N64 controller was probably one of the worst things I've ever held.

That's what she said! WOO!

really? I always hated game consoles UNTIL the Nintendo 64, because of the thumbstick. there have been better ones since, to be sure, but it was one of the first GOOD ones.

Absolutely spectacular. I wish one of these guys would put together a how to like Ben did for the Xbox laptop. But then again the N64 is suppose to be the hardest console to work with. Congrats to the creator.

Looks cute.
I can't wait till an Android developer writes emulators for these game... with the G1 keyboard and touchscreen, handheld emulation will be taken to the next level.

Hasn't Nintendo released an official N64 handheld back in 2004?
Zinger314 @ Sep 17th 2008 9:53AM
I find its lack of a Z button...disturbing.
HybridStorm @ Sep 17th 2008 12:06PM
It has dual Z buttons....

phanbouy @ Sep 17th 2008 12:00PM

xcrunk @ Sep 17th 2008 10:37AM
Hey, it's the new DS ULTRA PHAT. Nice.
Eric @ Sep 17th 2008 10:40AM
And this actually could have been made smaller. The chipset is much smaller for the 'Hey You Pikachu' N64. I realize they're kinda pricey, but if you're going for true portability that would have been a better option. It might have left a clamshell option open.
Still, quite impressive!
riggs @ Sep 17th 2008 10:46AM
Itsa *breathes* me *breathes*.......marioooooo......*breathes*
Platinum_Skeet @ Sep 17th 2008 10:59AM
I think the internet definition for portable should be the ability to "fit in your pocket"....
Hellaphunt @ Sep 17th 2008 11:43AM
I want one. Make me one Ben.
webon @ Sep 17th 2008 12:16PM

Hailrazer @ Sep 17th 2008 4:17PM
Thanks for the comments guys.
@Ignatious....Actually the controller I used is a Hori Mini Pad which has the same joystick and d-pad as the Gamecube controller.
@Zinger314....... As mentioned it has dual z buttons on the back for lefties and righties.
@Eric..... Actually the Hey You Pikachu N64 has the exact same size motherboard, it's not smaller.
Evangelion @ Oct 15th 2008 6:13PM
OMG! Portable Smash Bros!
