Now this is an interesting development. According to two separate tipsters (with two sets of photos) Apple has released a third version of the new
multi-hued iPod nano to the world -- a 4GB model. As there's been no announcement from the company, and there was certainly no mention of it at the '
Let's Rock' event, this is quite a head-scratcher. According to sources (and a Dutch retailer's site), the models are available in all nine colors and are priced at €119 (or about $168) -- though there seems to be some debate as to whether these lower capacity versions are limited editions or simply an incredible gaffe on Apple's part. Regardless, they appear to be the real thing, and they appear to be on store shelves right now (in some countries, at least). If you're looking for the ultimate Apple collector's item, this may be just the thing. Check out the gallery below for lots of looks at the mystery nano.
Update: The UK's Pocket-lint got hold of an Apple spokesperson who
told them Apple "made a limited number of 4GB iPod nanos for some international markets, but this is not one of our main configurations." Mystery solved, we guess -- but that "limited number" bit has us thinking this was still some kind of mistake.

Yes, I did get mine. Took almost a week, however.
The serial number checks out: it's under warranty until October 2009. http://www.chipmunk.nl/cgi-fast/applemodel.cgi shows that the iPod was made in Shenzhen, China, week 35, 2008, which is this week.
Someone I know saw one of these at a mass retailer in Australia today.
week 35 was the last week in august. we are now in week 38
This is odd, being that the Apple Store does not have these (I was just there yesterday buying my new 32gb Touch) and neither does the website.
I'm willing to bet that these are both fakes and that both tipsters are the same guy.
If you're willing to bet MONEY give me a call.
man this is so weird

Could this be the product (RED) iPod? Perhaps they'll sell it at the same price as the 8GB in other colors, with the difference going to AIDS charities?
Interesting...
Last week, when they released these new ipod nanos, I tried to buy a 16GB one at the UK apple store and I had to cancel my order twice because after placing the order I would get this:
IPOD (4TH GEN)4GB RED PRSNL-ZOO
PB669ZO/A £89.36
They eventually solved the problem and I could order the 16GB one properly.
Or maybe, on the highly competitive flash chip market, they bought a large number of 4GB chips they weren't able to build into the old nanos.
Instead of producing outdated players they wouldn't be able to sell very well, Apple decided to produce a limited number of new nanos with the stock of 4GB chips they had left.
this is odd, i could have SWORN i bought a sandisk sansa 8gb for 120$ 2 years ago that is a little bit thicker and still works.
"Finally, a product for me. I believed every word that man just said: because it's exactly what i wanted to hear."
This is the email I got given:
Thank you for your recent order for our new iPod nano 16GB. Due to an error this order has entered our system as an iPod nano 4GB.
We are currently correcting this Issue to ensure you receive your chosen iPod.
Please disregard any correspondance you may receive mentioning an iPod nano 4GB. Your order will be corrected to an iPod nano 16GB at a price of £149
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
I love their explanation: "due to an error". It's not really due to one, is it? It IS an error!
I had the same problem, but I cancelled the order.
Have a look at a few post up!
Why would the 4gb cost more than the 8gb?
It doesn't. In the Netherlands the 8GB version will cost you € 139,99. That is €20,- more than the 4GB which costs € 119,99.
Come on Joshua, stop posting crap.
No one asked you to read it..
They are on sale in Australia too.
Many 4GB models in an array of colours. i think it was $166 instead of the $199 for the 8GB.
Sign said "for a limited time"
Here's an English link for anyone interested. http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/EN/UserTemplate/apple
Thie rumor is 100% true. I have in my hot hands a 4Gb Blue nano 4th Generation. It was sold as a "limited edition" for AUD$166 from Jb Hi Fi. I still have it in the packaging seriously considering keeping it mint condition for collecting purposes but would love to check out the new nano features...hmm.
These iPod Nano also appears in Indonesia (recently in iBox, one of the Apple Authorized Retailer in Indonesia).
Seen the 4GB in Domayne (Australia) yesterday.
Just bought a 4GB iPod Nano 4th gen here in Manila: http://www.yugatech.com/blog/daily-dose/mysterious-4gb-ipod-nano-4g-arrives-in-manila/
Hi all, Im a Brit who has moved out to work for a year in South Africa. The 4 GB does exist as they had a demonstration of new Apple products in a local shoping center. Needless to say it was'nt cheap (Aprox. R1899 - 105 pounds) but they look like a good idea as a christmas pressent for the girlfriend so... i got her one lol.
OK - my eyes were not deceiving me... I stumbled across a 4GB, 4th Gen Nano in an overseas Navy Exchange and did a double-take... The price was $129 USD (no tax...). They had a few red ones, a silver one, and a couple blue ones, if I'm not mistaken...all 4GB.
Not quite enough savings over an 8GB edition direct from Apple to justify purchasing it, in my book...
Sorry, no further details were available as to their source, quantity available, etc. The NEX here is a sub-branch of another overseas store, so they just get what they get...so was surprised to see that they were not still selling Gen 2 nano's.
