A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

sure look nice. As always, great hardware from HTC. Except it is still windows mobile. Which means you get the bolt on touch oriented GUI with the rest which wasn't designed with touch interface in mind. Usual disjointed overall experiences. Then for the well-informed users, separately download Opera, decent photo viewer (like resco), media player, everything else the original OS doesn't do well. Manually sync or copy tunes/videos/photos.
And when you get an OS update (not as often as buggy iphone v2.x), it loses all the installed apps, bluetooth pairs, wifi passwords, ringtones, preferences, email accounts, speeddial, owner info ...etc. Contacts and calendars will go back via activeStink tho. Rival iTunes which syncs everything back (including when a video was last stop so you can resume) for zero hassel. Winmo is pretty hopeless compared to iphone/itunes as a package. Get Andriod on this baby and i may consider it.
Man, that's very impressive. The web browser alone made it worth it for me. The only reason I got myself an iPhone was the interface and quality web browsing. It's amazing how much better it looks with twice the res of the iPhone display. I'm hoping this will force Apple not to cut corners in their next iteration of the iPhone, given the HD's comparable size. This looks like a great device but I'm completely content with what I have now and besides, HTC or some other manufacturer is going to bring something out that's going to blow the Touch HD away pretty quickly considering how things are now.
Anyway, good job HTC!

You live in the US and an unlocked phone is your only option? I guess I've been talking into my shoe for the last 7 years.

Am I the only one who finds it pathetic how much engadget readers get a kick out of anything that makes the iPhone look inferior? Why can't people just appreciate both phones? It seems like all I read now is:

They are both beautiful phones, they both can entertain you really well while you're taking a shit or just layin down on the couch.

Um I really do have the iPhone 2g. It is just beginning to show it age though, so I am looking for something new. The iPhone is great and it has been a great phone for me, but I want something with more functionality now especially with my new job. So I figured a phone with windows mobile would be the way to go and I really like the iPhone since it has no buttons and it just one giant screen, so this phone totally caught my attention, but I am stuck with in my contract for another year, so if apple some how re-invents the iPhone and gives it much more functionality then I might pick that up, but as of now this phone is looking great to me and will pick it up when I can.

I agree, but HTC really needs to change up the software scheme by getting off the WinMo bandwagon. My poor old Apache crashes all the time due to poor MS support. HTC needs to move to LiMo and Android, so they can have both the greatest hardware and the greatest software. I would get the Diamond Touch Pro at almost any price with a good Linux stack on it, instead of crashy old WinMo.

this is the first true iphone killer . xperia x1 is just too lame in front of this , the superb touchscreen & the wvga resolution coupled with that 5mpx camera . i am never going to buy that stupid e-i-phone
I whish someone around me besides sprint carried the touch. I had gotten it through them and loved the phone. Unfortunately sprint has the worst coverage in Houston and was never able to provide even a semi decent service. The phone never crashed and the touch feedback is great. I have to agree with a couple other comments that the interface is still lacking some, but not horrible. I am glad they finally put the accelerometer in this one. If someone good carries this when it comes out I will definately be dropping my Iphone.
Give it multiple micro sdhc slots please!!! i can't wait to kick my mogul to the curb and buy this. Will be getting the Touch Pro regardless though. Let's go Sprint and HTC, get a CDMA one to me within 6 months for a reasonable price. i could see sprint rebounding...

Further viewing of the video really shows that its not as impressive as these commenters states. The UI is not fluid, the black and white elements do help speed up the UI. Simply because its b/w. Worse still, the company heavily copied Apples excellent UI on the iPhone, and simply bastardized it for their own use. Again without Apple, these "me too" companies really have no clue when it comes to innovation. Without iTunes like integration and its massive content for users to enjoy, the HTS is just another "me too" device.

A black and white interface is no different from a color interface. Just because its lacking color doesnt mean it will be quicker. Its just aesthetics. In this day and age given the types of processors and os's in phones do you think a phone will chug because of a few hues?
By that rational if I were to put up a wallpaper or skin on this phone, Id be screwed. As for the interface HTC is simply putting a new spin on what Apple did with theirs. I can see that. But by your rationale Apple copied concepts for a touch screen icon based phone from the likes of HTC, palm, Sony Ericsson and others. The more and more I read your comments its clear that you dont mouth off because a product isnt the best, its because it isnt Apple.

But why HTC always have this Europe vs USA 3G bands SEPARATELY ? Does it really save them much on 3G-radio chips ? And worth dealing with 2 different models ?
Why dont release ONE phone with 3 or 4 band 3G ? Like iPhone 3G :)

legal issues, if you read the paper for the past 6 month, you probably heard qualcomm was in legal trouble. htc only uses qualcomm radios (for celluar). they are barred from having certain bands (i can only image US 3G bands or one of the US 3G bands) activated on CERTAIN phones, so a lot of the htc phones in europe will never be released in US/NA.
iphone uses infineon 3G radio, again this was in the news a few month ago (i think it was on engadget too). infineon is a .. german company i believe... and their 3G implementation didn't run into any IP legal issues.
hope that explains it for you ;p
it is android compatible, that's the whole point of android. but who is willing to port everything over to this phone, that's the million dollar question.

its funny how everyone is so fast to call any new touch screen phone wiht a big screen an iphone killer. if people hate the damn phone so much don't get it and if you don't have it and never tried give it a break damn, every forum has the same comments when theres a new touch screen its the next iphone killer. basically as much as people want to hate the iphone it set a precedent and the reason all these cool new phones with better resolution better camera are coming out is because they are TRYING emphases on trying to have the success the iphone had and still has. I will admit there were some things apple could have done to make the iphone better but they did make an amazing phone regardless of what people think. another thing since these are IPHONE KILLERS of course they will have better features than the iphone thats the whole point. Im pretty sure the next iphone will top any of these phones and the cycle continues.
It's not just "Iphone Killers" with the ASUS eeepc, other companies have created "EEE Killers", you always get the "Killer" product and its always the rivals. Like back in the day with the IPOD and then the ZEN (IPOD Killer). It's just annoying stereo type :)
I've always preferred a hardware keyboard, but I'd consider giving that up for this device. That screen is SWEET.
where are you guys getting these cheap Simply Everything Plans from Sprint? I have the 450 minute plan and it's nowhere near as cheap as you're saying
