Gateway's new MC Series shown off, signs of life spotted
No bull whatsoever -- we're really digging this so-called MC Series that Gateway's busy showing off in Budapest. According to Laptop Mag, who was on hand for the event, the family is designed to go after those mildly spectacular HDX rigs from HP and Sony's FW crew. The model on display was packing a 16-inch widescreen LCD, color customizable lid with a leather strip running down its center, a backlit keyboard and a brushed metal palm rest. Also of note, editors spotted both AMD and Intel-powered versions, and while no pricing information was available, we're told to keep an eye out for a November release. Head south to the read link for more pictures and a hands-on vid.

nice laptop
9800M GTX and Quad-core, please.
I hate to admit this ... but I was recently asked by a friend to help fix her laptop. She brought in a newer model gateway (full of spyware and other crap) and I must say that I was impressed with the machine. The screen was beautiful and the machine itself was a lot better looking than the dell or hp systems I deal with at the office ... save the gateway logo. I'd consider buying one if they dropped the price a bit ... hard to beat a dell quarterly deal though.
gateway makes a mean lappy. I've got an mx8734 which is a low end 17-incher and the case, screen and touchpad are great, petter then my friend's dv9000. even with the crappy pentium dual core (for the uninformed, it's basically a rebranded core duo (not core 2 duo) it's still pretty nice and i love every bit of it, although ubuntu doesn't like my touchpad (it's one of these type pads http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/13830.jpg )
I own a 14-inch tablet from them and it's an awesome machine. Great screen, excellent performance, and quality components, especially the keyboard and mouse pad. They aren't the best at designing port layouts (all on one side is almost intolerable), but overall I am very happy with it.
You aren't the only one that hates to admit that Gateway's laptops look...decent. I had a run in with their products when I bought my last desktop from them (don't ask why). I was turned off from their products because the desktop was a....well, you get the picture. I went to buy a laptop and Gateway's were priced very decent, but from experience I couldn't buy their products, so I went with an HP.
Big mistake. I've got a friend who bought one of the new Gateway laptops because his old one conveniently had the LCD crack. I'm jealous, and will definitely actually consider Gateway once again.
Good for the price sometimes means lack of quality, but not always thankfully.
On the topic of the article though, yes, there are some flaws, like the audio ports on the front. Yes, that's an inconvenience, but it's not a deal breaker for some people. They're not that bad...
That laptop looks awesome.
Looks like a nice machine, the touch of leather should add a bit of class.
I'm sorry, but... what the FUCK is up with that anti-vista post above this one? It's not news. It's not funny. It's just... a waste of time.
Why is it here?
Seriously, that was just a terrible post.
I wonder why commenting was left off of that "article".
Rather than irreverent, Engagdet ges more irrelevant everyday.
I think the ghods automatically make some poor soul post such things to balance out the anti-Linux and anti-Mac ones :)
And I love how you can't post comments on it either....
If they have one sans glossy screen, I'll be very interested.
Another idiotic glossy screen. Look at the picture: Are those the "rich blacks and vivid colors" that were promised to ignorant consumers? Oh, with a reflection of yourself and a giant streak across them?
I agree. I'm so sick of glossy screens and the marketing BS that goes with them. I've been looking purchasing a Dell in the near future .. and there's not one screen above 1280x800 that comes in matte ... and this is in the home AND small business section.
I'm sorry, I love Glossy screens, and to my eyes the makes colors appear richer. Just turn the brightness up, I'm using a glossy screen and I can't see myself.
Yeah, Dell thinks it knows better than its customers. I had an online chat on their site and asked about the glossy screens, and the rep got shitty with me for challenging the assertion that every customer wants glossy. He smugly declared that they'd done the research and knew better than anyone what people wanted. I of course pointed out that it's not what people wanted, but rather what had been shoved down their throats, starting at Best Buy and sadly continuing through every vendor (including the vaunted Apple).
Real-world surveys reveal that, in practice, people prefer MATTE screens.

Leather? Disgusting!
That's so useless and bizarre.
Faux leather would be tacky but fine.
Real animal parts mounted on a piece of electronics?
Seems pretty absurd.
Shut up leather feels great. It's just an animal who cares?
It's the cow's damn fault for making chairs that are ridiculously comfortable.
I love my gateway laptop, especially the touchpad and keyboard.
I will keep my mac :)
Crap! I just bought a fx series laptop from them not 2 weeks ago. Oh well, welcome to the world of technology I guess...
:o(
Why??? With the friggin! audio ports on the front?????!?!?!?!?! Enough with that crap please! A laptop like this is more like a desktop replacement than a portable road warrior. Who wants to plug external speakers into this and have a wire running out the front on a nice clean desk?
wow ... the whole thing is like a mirror.
bring back the matte finish please.
