Video: Toshiba's gesture control coming to its cell-based TVs?
Remember that Qosmio G55 laptop with gesture control? Yeah, the one with the Cell-based SpursEngine under the hood. Well it looks like Tosh is bringing that so-called "natural" gesture input to its future cell-based televisions. Judging by the latest video alone, the gesture control seems more at home on the big-screen TV than smaller-screened laptops that require a higher degree of precision and closer viewing proximity. Demonstrated on a prototype, Toshiba hints that the tech might come to future Cell-based TVs -- interesting what with the cell-based ZF televisions already announced for Europe. While we find pushing buttons on a remote about as natural (and lazy) as it gets, here's hoping for this arm-flailing gesture control on future Toshiba TVs just for the nerdiness of it. If it will make my favorite quarterbacks throw to the goddamn open receiver as I flail around and gesture at the screen, then sign me up. Otherwise, not interested.
I can imagine myself scratching my head and the channel changes at a pivotal moment of watching flavor flav's speak his infamous catch phrase, "Yeah Boy!"
Completly useles..
Imagine, just have to swing your hand to change a channel,(If DVR capabilities are available)stop at a particular point and zoom in like apple's multi touch screen!Wow..I can't wait for this!!
Pretty cool. It certainly has potential.
I'm more worried that when I'm playing Wii games, it's going to shift away from that input source.
I could see it useful for computer displays like is some science fiction movies but not for home use.
This is definitely NOT completely useless. This is the closest product I have seen to 'Minority Report computing' to date. This will surely be the future of how we interact with television; it is natural and intuitive. It will obviously be very important that the system cannot be triggered by accident, but surely this will be possible at some point.
Downside: no more flirtatious 'fights' for the remote control.
Hey, the equivalent of fighting over the remote here is: Who holds up their fist first?
And the gesture for porn?
I don't like where this is headed, fred.
I'm prepared to make what would be one of those famous declarations (ala, "everything that will be invented, has been invented")... that this will never ever catch on. When I'm watching TV, lifting my hand to "catch" the RF signal is something that drives me CRAZY, let alone having to wave and dance just to get something to happen. And what if I'm watching a game and I throw up my hands in celebration ... and then it switches to Lifetime or Oxygen or something? Instant shame!
That photo is asking for the song "everybody wants kung fu fighting..".
