HTC's Touch HD, Diamond and Pro get together for photo shoot
You've seen HTC's Touch Diamond, Touch Pro and Touch HD handled in separate instances, but CNET Asia took the opportunity to get all three of the handsets together for a little get-together. Atypical for most sibling relationships, these three seemed to get along fairly well, though we did overhear the Touch Diamond calling the Touch Pro "a fatso." Hit the read link for a few more looks.

Idk why, but the 3 different times amused me.
Current Touch Diamond owner... can't wait for the HD.
jay.viz @ Sep 22nd 2008 2:36AM
I can't wait for the HD Pro.
fh @ Sep 22nd 2008 3:47AM
Figure people might want to see more hi-res pics:

Also, the HD isn't huge; it's just that the Diamond is tiny.
Intrepid @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:04AM
I laughed too, although I would have put them in order lol.
I can't wait to get a HD either...
TareX @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:42AM
@ fh
EXACTLY. The Diamond is really too tiny for convenience, especially during typing. The Touch HD is perfectly sized (I can't believe it's mms smaller and thinner than the iPhone).
The Touch Pro is just inexplicably fat. Did a keyboard require THAT much thickness? I mean the HD is even thinner than the Diamond that doesn't have a keyboard.
nicholaelaw @ Sep 22nd 2008 10:37PM
Me too here. I think the Touch HD is so tempting that HTC is gonna lose sales on other Touch family products. Hmm, not necessarily a bad thing tho.
afd92 @ Oct 5th 2008 3:26PM
why can't wait for touch HD?
Bermuda @ Oct 12th 2008 1:46PM
Only the touch pro seems to have tv out. This comes very handy when you have a presentation and you just connect your little device to the projector!! The touch HD doesn't seem to have this function!
HAR @ Oct 14th 2008 6:39PM
Anyone knows when this HD diamond is coming out....I'm going crazy trying to find information on it, and cant find much.
I need to know when is going to come over to USA ...and to wich carrier.
eggothewaffle @ Sep 22nd 2008 2:34AM
I just want to say that I would like the HTC Touch HD with Android on dual boot.
That is all.
absurdio @ Sep 22nd 2008 2:46AM
Yeah. No kidding. The Touch HD is far and away the most gorgeous piece of hardware I've seen in a long time. ...It's pretty heartbreaking that it's stuck with WinMo in it.
Jon Nelson @ Sep 22nd 2008 2:53AM
@ absurdio
At least you didn't outright say something like "lawlz, it's still not an iPhone" and get automatically low ranked.
And for that, I thank you.
loosely_coupled @ Sep 22nd 2008 3:45AM
Dualboot? argh... Just Android please! Stay as far away from WinMo as possible! It's ugly, slow, buggy as hell, has a terrible antiquated user interface built for a stylus, etc. It's just nasty!
eggothewaffle @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:28AM
Why dual boot?
Well, a later comment pretty much provides my answer:
"My experience with WM has also been largely positive. I am optimistic for Android, but since it hasn't been released yet and will still be a version 1.0 product (in perpetual beta, going by Google's track record!), I'm withholding any judgment till it comes out. I guess it is fashionable to irrationally bash all things Microsoft which is why you see people touting Android over WM all the time."
Nothing wrong with having choices and freedom :)
myhome @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:43AM
Anyone else notice the 4 buttons?
Answer, Home, Back and Hangup.
Hmmm.... were else have I seen those 4? Oh yes on the Android phones... gee in the same order too!
Something thinks the HD might come with Android on it!!!
Mark Anderson @ Sep 22nd 2008 6:25AM
Has anyone who complains about WinMo - and particularly skinned WinMo 6.1 - actually used it for any length of time? Because, you know, it's actually pretty good.
CJ @ Sep 22nd 2008 9:18AM
myhome: Er... You do realise that all current HTC phones have those same four buttons, only they're usually surrounding the navigation pad, which the HD doesn't have. What it DOES have, is a space at the bottom, so it only makes sense that they would be lined up there.
Ed @ Sep 22nd 2008 2:47AM
I have an iPhone but am kinda digging the HTC's, y'know?
I mean iPhone really is missing some essential features that I think would be really easy to implement...

God, why is the Touch HD so SEXY. Hopefully HTC is smart and loads it up with some Android goodness!
It's the early bird, too :)
Ahmed Alzayani @ Sep 22nd 2008 2:49AM
The HD look sexy .... and can save you 2 minutes more than the Diamond!
Miguel @ Sep 22nd 2008 2:53AM
Two words: software library. The WinMo core and backend supports so many apps and profiles that it is the mobile OS of choice. Why code up your own OS, solicit third-party vendors, develop your own core applications to go with that OS...when you can just slap a skin on a fully functional OS already made by someone else that serves all your customers' needs?
WinMo may be getting a little long in the tooth (please, 7, save us!), but it's still awesome. HTC knows this.
jarednoah @ Sep 22nd 2008 3:21AM
I have been using Windows Mobile for as long as I can remember. There were occasional reboots time and again but it is still the most powerful mobile OS available at the moment. It's not for everyone but it certainly have its own merits. Choices are good. Be it windows, iphone, rim, symbian, android or whatever floats your boat. I, for one, like where HTC and Windows Mobile is going. I will buy the Touch HD when it becomes available.
Mark Anderson @ Sep 22nd 2008 6:27AM
But... but... it's made by Microsoft and must therefore be lazy, inefficient and the span of the devil!
Instead of, as you say, currently being the most powerful and versatile mobile OS out there.
Hmm.
Jack Storm @ Sep 22nd 2008 8:07AM
Amen!!
Very well put jarednoah!
Mike @ Sep 22nd 2008 8:35AM
I agree! I updated the firmware on my HTC Touch from WinMo 6.0 to 6.1 and the stability increase alone has made it wonderful. I've never had a problem with the speed of the OS, and as long as you get a decent browser or two, you're gold. I keep my phone on for days and days and never have problems.
ipubs bastard child @ Sep 22nd 2008 9:11AM
There is no way on earth im ever using a normal mobile ever again. The most modern "normal" smartphone i've used is a nokia n95 and frankly it's a pig. It's a normal phone that is trying very hard to be a business tool and fails. Even the latest SE's are clunky.
I've never used a blackberry though if it ran TOMTOM, i'd consider it (i dont know if it does).. but WM has been my bread and butter since around 2003. Yes it does look like a pig and thats is exactly why HTC's skins look the shizzle and are finally making wm mobiles more appealing to the general public..
The practicality of these phones for business alone far outweighs anything that the iphone can currently do. Iphone's are more for the residential markets and WM is more for people that than need an office on the move more than they need to find an album cover by rifling through hundreds of other images.
Where the HD falls over is as a media player. The built in memory is pants. While expandable cards are well and good, a larger capacity would have been nice. Most smartphones seem to suffer piss poor battery life and have vaguely okay cameras.. though it doesnt take much to whoop the iphone there, not that its much of a smartphone anyway.
For me, my next phone is between the HTC touch HD and the SE experia x1.
HalfJoey @ Sep 22nd 2008 3:29AM
the Touch HD is indeed sexy, but im still waiting for the Touch Pro to come out on Verizon. Whats the deal?
Chris Anderson @ Sep 22nd 2008 3:30AM
Remind me again why the Touch Pro is almost twice as thick as the Diamond, which is also thicker than the Touch HD?
fh @ Sep 22nd 2008 3:43AM
Hardware keyboard.
And a bigger battery than the Diamond, although now not all Diamonds are created equal.
The HD manages to keep slim because of the larger footprint. Look at the volume (LxWxH) of the devices and it should make sense.
BChau @ Sep 22nd 2008 3:39AM
Why do we have WM haters all the time when I suspect most haven't even used a WM phone before. I for one have been using HTC WM phone (i-mate JASJAM) for the last 2 years and now own HTC Touch Diamond. I have enjoyed these. They are fully customisable (not just the theme, skin but even the entire ROM) and there are so many apps available that I can download freely. Others talked about having to reboot WM phones all the time. That is my experience. I rarely need to soft-reset the phone, let alone hard-reset the phone. Interestingly it is the iPhones that needs reboot all the time. That are from my colleagues who have bought iPhones since its launch.
Adderz @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:39AM
There are WinMo haters simply because WinMo development had stagnated ever since 2003 SE. The new thing is all about touch friendliness, and WinMo is NOT finger friendly (in its vanilla form).
You can have all the apps, all the customizability, all the features you want, but when its not easy to use, none of those features will get used.
In saying that, WinMo7 looks to be a gem, and HTC's Touchlo and Manila are really nice, so its all coming together. When Microsoft finally release a marketplace for all these great Apps to come together in ONE place....the Winmo platform will be a winner.
FYI, i own a TOuch Cruise with Manila and i love it!
ZSX @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:43AM
My experience with WM has also been largely positive. I am optimistic for Android, but since it hasn't been released yet and will still be a version 1.0 product (in perpetual beta, going by Google's track record!), I'm witholding any judegement till it comes out. I guess it is fashionable to irrationally bash all things Microsoft which is why you see people touting Android over WM all the time.
Mark Anderson @ Sep 22nd 2008 9:43AM
I agree with Adderz, native WinMo isn't finger friendly. However, as the big WinMo manufacturers are all now providing excellent touch skins this isn't really an issue. My current phone of choice if an HI1 flashed Omnia and it's excellent. No stylus required although the optical mouse is awesome for browsing and fiddling about with its innards.
jarednoah @ Sep 22nd 2008 12:23PM
yeah, I also had the experience of rebooting, for numerous times at that, my first gen iphone. the problem with the iphone is you cannot reboot it normally, or I am just clueless. I have to wait for the battery to be drained before I can get the phone functions back. It irritated me to no end, but well, they may have a reason why did not put a reboot button on the iphone.
Many people have admired the iphone screen, yes its big but it is rough. It's nothing compared to the "picture perfect" touch diamond. Now the HD has been introduced, the gap is even bigger. I would love to see iphone get that same resolution. It would be perfect.
But I have to digress, as much as I love the "normalcy" of the iphone, it just couldn't touch windows mobile in its robustness, business-wise. Like the ipod, it's just for the "normal people". People who want to take control of their devices will always choose Windows Mobile and soon the Android.
I am open to experimentation and pledge no allegiance or fanboyism to anything inanimate. I am all for what caters for my my needs the most.
patriotsn1 @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:03AM
Jeez you people are all in some serious trouble if Android sucks.... I mean, I've put it on my Tilt and messed around with it. It's really not all THAT life changing. I don't see why so many people post about android whenever there is word about a new phone. Jeez, you guys sure are expecting a lot.
Ahmed Alzayani @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:39AM
Android is not good for now, because no one really use it and it's still version 0.9, don't forgot it's open source and if we can use it on our phones it will develop very fast (submit bugs, request new features ... etc). and we will create our own custom cooked rooms . it will be slow ... maybe 3+ years to reach the same level as Winmo ,,,, but if we can dual boot our phones .. it will be the best thing ever.
Tony @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:44AM
I can't wait to get my hands on the HD or the Pro. I wish i could just buy them both!!

Richard @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:53AM
If the HD comes with Android it will go from great to "pffft @ Jesus Phone, Im a God"
PEZ @ Sep 22nd 2008 6:41AM
A little off topic, but it would be nice to be able to just download Android and load it up, hell i'd pay for it, I think. Then, it can be developed to take advantage of the screen, and sorts that other hardware phones have. Would be great.
deslock @ Sep 22nd 2008 6:48AM
Wow that HD Touch looks sweet... I know I'll get ranked down for writing this, but it's the first phone since the iPhone that's caused my jaw to drop. There have been a few other impressive devices over the years, but the combination of light weight, thinness, and hi-resolution in a device who's footprint is dominated by the screen is really head turning and still unusual in a phone.
Those that prefer a tactile keyboard will shrug and move on, but it's cool... you guys have plenty of other devices to choose from :P
CJ @ Sep 22nd 2008 9:25AM
Well, hopefully the bluetooth on the HD won't be as crippled as the iPhone's. That isn't a crack at the iPhone, but more a general optimism; If it isn't, you would be able to hook up a bluetooth keyboard to this, even Apple's bluetooth keyboard (I have an N95, and I often use my freind's Apple BT keyboard for belting out messages and emails on my phone). Combine that with (possible) TV-out capability, and you have your own, tiny on-the-go PC.
Gylman @ Sep 22nd 2008 7:12AM
Add me to the WinMo fan list. I've used it since 2004 in all flavours and it gets the job done. I've got a bazillion apps that work just way I like. First thing I plan to do after I turn on the phone is disable Touchflo, and get my phone looking just the way I like.
Go Touch HD! Go Winmo!
jarednoah @ Sep 22nd 2008 7:14AM
The funny thing is I had a jailbroken iphone first gen. I have enjoyed it especially its ipod functions. I have actually liked it a lot but as soon as the novelty wore off, I went back to my HTC Tilt. The iphone is great for "normal" people who doesn't want to customize their phones to their liking or need, install apps they need, or just want basic functionalities like an ipod which happens to have a phone built in or people who find Windows Mobile phone prohibitively expensive unlocked.
There's a steep learning curve associated with windows mobile and this is what turn off a lot of "normal" users. Personally, however, I like it a lot that I can transform my WM mobile into any interface I want. This has been achieved by third party app of course. And with the help of a very busy Windows Mobile Developer Community like XDA Developers, the possibilities with Windows Mobile is endless.
I now have the touch Diamond which I love. With the latest ROMs from XDA, it has really been a gem, fast and responsive mobile device. I do not even remember when I last rebooted my phone. I have even grown to love the onscreen keyboard which I found difficult to use in the first few days. Now, I am as fast typist as I had been when I was still using my iphone. It's been that wonderful experience for me.
I am expecting an even better experience with Touch HD. With a very large and busy developer community, I know that I will not be left at the mercy of providers or manufacturers if they do not update their roms or something gets wrong with my device. I always can turn to the 'community' for help. This has been and will always be the appeal of Windows Mobile to me. I AM NEVER ALONE.
CJ @ Sep 22nd 2008 9:30AM
I'm with you, I'm the kind of person (and I absolutely don't intend to blow my own trumpet here) who can pick up a brand new phone/OS/UI, and within ten minutes, render it unusuable by anyone but me, I like my shit hard to access to anyone without the know-how :D
Windows mobile is a fantastic OS, obviously, like all systems, it has it's drawbacks and problems, but the thing is, almost everything can be tweaked to fit your exact specifications, that's why I'm also a fan of Symbian/UIQ, very end-user customisable.

I have always been a keyboard guy but the Touch HD is going to switch me over to a full touch interface! How does the Touch HD compare to the Sony Xperia?
charlierene @ Sep 29th 2008 5:56AM
I prefer the advantage of a keyboard. I tried writing a game for the diamond and the pro, but it plays so much better on the pro with the keyboard.
