Meet the T-Mobile G1

Update: TmoNews has just uncovered new specs and info on the phone. Here's what they've got so far: the phone is 4.6 x 2.16 x 0.63 inches, weighs 5.6 ounces, features a 480 x 320 HVGA display, sports 3G (obviously), GPS, has a 3.1-megapixel camera, supports up to 8GB of memory (though no format is mentioned), and will feature 5 hours of talktime with 130 hours of standby. Strangely, the phone won't do video capture (what?), won't have stereo Bluetooth, will require a Gmail account, and won't be sold at stores outside of a 2-5 mile radius of T-Mobile's 3G coverage areas. That last bit sounds a little odd to us, but we're guessing a lot of the functionality of this device will be shot in non-3G regions.

Do not fear progress.
People prefer to be stuck to apple products and adore everything apple does.

hello folks, glad to read sooo many comments about the new G1. i am here to ask whether the internet will be able to give me real time coverage of security cameras? and whether anyone has tried watching movies on this device...did it work? yes? no ? maybe?
Thanks alot, really appreciate it. Sangmeet
OK, I'm hooked. The phone part of the device BLEW my Blackberry 8800 out of the water for RF performance. I don't have dropped calles anymore at notorious locations around town. I my home the coverage is wall-to-wall, unlike the 8800. So I'm impressed! The mail and messaging are perfect. I use them all the time. The Andriod apps very in quality. The heavily tauted "Shop Savy" app is a joke. The database is empty and often errored. Scan a box of crackers and get a pricing for a water pipe. So some day it may come together.
The camera is good in decent lighting. Got some great fall colors when I was shopping today. I ordered the headphone adapter so I can listen to music (no 1/8 inch headphone jack). And the battery life is a bit of a problem. I ordered a high cap battery today, it is really needed if you use the thing as much as I do. Also order the desk dock so charging is easier.
Over all 8 out of 10 and I expect the apps will improve.

Flash for the G1 finally!!

I have had a literal plethora of smart phones in the past four years... I consider myself somewhat of a fiend, to say the least... I don't consider myself too hard to satisfy - but with the rapid advancement in mobile technology there's a lot to keep up with, try out, and experiment with...
That said, my latest acquisition was the T-Mobile G1 (unlocked for AT&T, of course!) How'd I get it? I traded my white iPhone 3G (16GB) That's right... The "holy grail" of the mobile world for the Google phone! The result? Sheer joy!
Not only do I save $15/month from my bill (because the G1 works with AT&T's unlimited MEdia Net package rather than the hefty $30/month unlimited data for all other smartphones,) but I get a streamlined experience that is fast, easy, and synchronized all by Google! I have literally used Google every day of my life to make life easier for quite a while now (so this phone really was created for people like me...) Google SMS, GOOG-411, Google Maps, Gmail, Search (of course,) Talk, and on and on...
What did I have to do to get all "set up" after switching from the coveted iPhone? I just logged in... Immediately I had over 100 contacts, my e-mail inbox, all my calendar events, and everything else synchronized on my device! I got a tactile QWERTY that is underrated and overlooked by many (Have you seen the detail and ease of its set-up compared to 90% of other smartphones???) I love the trackball addition. Google is all about being open, having options, being easy to use, and getting you what you need and where you need it FAST. This phone, though maybe not aesthetically revolutionary by any means, sports the very essence of Google's variety of options. I loved the trackball on all my 8000 series BlackBerry's and I think it fits well on the G1...
The capacitive touch is only SLIGHTLY less sensitive than the iPhone. I admit that multi-touch is awesome, but I can definitely sacrifice it for what I'm gaining with my G1. The phone overall feels very strong and well-built. I actually like a little heft. That's one of the things I liked most about the iPhone's I'd had... They were always solid, firm, and mildly weighty. Very well-built. And even with a screen that kicks out the G1 acheives that very effect. Good job HTC! (Way better than the AT&T Tilt!)
I believe it is only a matter of time before the Android Market is exploding exponentially compared to the iTunes app store. Why? Less restriction, more possibilities, and more opportunities. The iTunes app store is amazing and was probably the hardest thing to give up. The absolute quality of even many of the FREE apps was insane! Give Android a little time. The market is still in Beta and I've already replaced many of the things I had on my iPhone for free! (Even visual voicemail!)
In short, I use Google for everything and now I have everything streamlined on my mobile device in a slick, strong, and functional package. It fits me much better than the high-profile iPhone, personally. For me, it edges out the iPhone as far as the best mobile device I've ever had (and boy was it close...) I can't wait till AT&T actually gets involved with the Android action and gets some new hardware out there in the mix...
* As a side note, I acknowledge that at the time being the iPhone may be a better option for corporate use simply because of the exchange e-mail support and whatnot... This has all just been "my humble opinion..."
Their is nothing special about the T-mobile G1... I just bought one today and just to get it to do anything that is advertised about it you have to go through so much BS. On top of that their are so many hidden fees included that they really don't let the common public know about them or just give you a bold face lie. Like was done to me. I'm not an idiot i figured for the added stuff that my account would need, ppl at the store told me this is all i would need. Now i get home try to do all the stuff i was told i could do. Found out i couldn't, called t-mobile's hotline and then proceeded to find out all the extra little things i would need. Those came to a total of $35 dollars more on top of the unlimited data plan i got. So all in all $60 dollars more a month just to be able to compete with the I Phone not worth it.
Not true I HATE anything Apple so much that the I Phone is going to be the first Apple product allowed in my house. I don't even have an I-Pod i have a Zune. What i am writing is the closest to a real testament your going to get coming from someone who HATES Apple.
