Samsung shoves 10x optical zoom into HZ1 point-and-shoot
Had enough from Cologne? Nah, we didn't think so, so we'll happily pass along Samsung's latest compact from Photokina 2008. The pocket-friendly HZ1 doesn't look too outrageous at first glance, but closer inspection reveals that it's packing a mighty fine 10x optical zoom. You'll also find face detection technology and dual image stabilization, and word on the street also claims a 720p movie mode. Sadly, there aren't any details on price or availability, but we can definitely see this one moving quite briskly from store shelves whenever it lands.

What's the deal with all of this face detection technology, don't the people take the picture know if they are taking pictures of faces or not?
but will it detect Michael Jackson?
heh. it's for focusing on a certain person ... it's like an auto-focus for the auto-focus.
Miyagi want auto-focus
well you know what that means,.... it's business time
lol I am sure they do...
All it does is detect the faces, optimize focus and exposure to make those faces be the best of the picture.
Smile detection is kinda neat, once the faces are recognized, the camera triggers the shutter when it detects those pearly whites...
Really neat for the casual point and shooter.
By the way, I hate how this crap is making its way to DSLRs...
Inevitable really. When the new camera meme is "why would you get that over a dSLR?" people start expecting that dSLRs are better than their point and shoots and by "better" I mean "does EVERYTHING the P&S did and more.
I'm really curious as to how they shoved a 10X lens into what looks to be a pocketable camera. Also if it's got a better menu system than my previous Samsung P&S. It was a great camera, but it was sloooooooooooow to make settings in manual mode.
+1 on the SLR comment.
And one thing that I wish would make it from SLRs to points and shoots is selectable focus points. Nothing annoys me more than the camera picking what it wants to focus on seemingly at random.
Lumix TZ4/TZ5..
yeah, bought already the tz3 1.5 years ago and now have the tz5. great camera - looks quite similar :-)
My idea exactly
Yea, it looks and has the same specs as my Panasonic DMC-TZ5. What's new?
sure looks alot like the Panasonic TZ5
I had the TZ5 and it records great qua;ity movie, just the file size is incredible big. its .mov I will see id this is MP4 then it should be ok.
Damn why can't Canon make a digital Elph w/10x optical zoom? And while they are at it, Integrated GPS taking too.
Totally agree. Although I doubt our feature requests will get filled anytime soon.
But if Canon popped out a 12megapixel digital elph with 10x zoom and integrated GPS, I would buy it the same day, and I would be willing to pay a lot for it.
Oh well now I see it is a 4.2mm sensor. That is how they were able to get 10x optical out of it. I guess as long as such a tiny sensor can still take nice pictures it doesnt matter.
That's the rub- it probably can't take nice-looking pictures.
The last couple of years Samsung has come out with some snazzy looking cameras, sleek black metal casing, etc. Too bad their image quality is lacking behind the main players.
Well, I wanna be there at photokina2008.
Samsung made good one. 10x optical zoom and 720p HD movie mode is quite attractive.
LCD size is 2.7" TFT LCD (not touchscreen) and 10.2M pixels is also decent.
Finally, the price is a main question.
