Confirmed: T-Mobile G1 has no 3.5mm headphone jack

The estimated percentage of cellphones that were recycled in 2007.
The EPA estimated that of the 126.3 million cellphones disposed of in 2007, only 14 million -- about 10 percent -- were recycled. The rest? Landfill heaven. (source: EPA, July 2008)

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
This is a deal breaker.
Does it support A2DP?
Not yet apparently tom.
Google didn't feel the api was polished enough or something. Supposedly its coming.
Maan. HTC you just totally unsold me.
so far I've heard no A2DP (I'd forgive the no 3.5 in an instant if it did)
Do you look at the other articles?
The answer to both is NO.
One of the most annoying things about the iPhone (version 1) was the requirement of an adapter to use regular headphones. At least it shipped with a functional proprietary pair. Apple finally listened to enough of us bitch about it so that iPhone 2 now has a standard jack. Why don't companies GET how important this is to us? It's not like this phone is trying to break any micro-thin records.
If A2DP = Maybe win
If no A2DP = Very Fail
A2DP runs down your battery like a bitch, and rechargeable headphones? Come on. The option=great. Having it be the only option=fail.
True, but I think most people are interested in this phone to see Android, not to actually buy this specific piece of hardware. We can play with it in the stores when it starts showing up, and if we like Android, we can pick up a better-designed handset; no doubt there will be more cool Android phones coming out in the next 6 months.
this is obviously disappointing to many people, but let's not forget this is a phone, from a phone company, and not an ipod. love them or hate them, apple thinks about things in a way most industry engineers do not--and they also blew it on the standard headphone jack front with the 1st gen iphone. as usual, public expectation is way ahead of the hardware.
Dongles are a massive pain in the ass. I used one with a Sony W580i for a while and it's just not worth it, especially considering how easy it is to just throw a 3.5mm in there. This seems like a major lack of attention to detail - things like this will ruin a phone/platform if you're not careful.
I can't believe no one has noticed this yet. I'll type it in all caps so you can't miss it.
IT COMES WITH A WIRED STEREO HEADSET
there are already adapters for this, it is just easier for HTC and T-Mobile to sell it as an accessory later on, check on ebay there are tons of mini-usb to 3.5mm jacks everywhere for cheap too!
Oh, I see. So you guys would have me solve this problem with a big ass dongle or special headphones that fit the jack? What wonderful ideas! Hurry, or you might miss the deadline for turning this in to Stockholm!
/sarcasm
Good Lord! It's worse than the recessed headphone jack on the first iPhone!
a2dp is not currently supported on the iPhone or G1.
The difference is that the G1 and Android powered phones have open APIs and when it is released there will be several quick fixes out (if not by Google, then 3rd parties), the downloads will not be killed by something like the Apple app store.
Being an open platform, having several other phones come out will eventually make this a more powerful phone. Once you have Android power phones on AT&T (2 phones in early 09), Verizon, Sprint, etc you will see the community overtake the iPhone ownership.
Not that I am a complete iPhone hater... I just always have a problem with a closed and controlling company like Apple. iPhone changed a lot, but it will fall.
Deal breaker??? There is ALWAYS going to be something that is an issue with someone.. I for one think this is a stupid choice by HTC, but its like.. seriously.. there is a lot more good then bad on this phone.. alot!
I luv open devices...
I love iLuv headphones on my iPhone... Oh, what's that G1? No, sorry, 3.5mm. Bummer dude.
The worst part about it is that currently its impossible to order one.
The site is being bombarded, I cant even get to my regular account info.
Baaaaaaad deal T-Mobile.... baaaaaad deal.
You cant program a headphone jack no mater how open it is.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000UUQGEY is all you need
Is there a flash player?
what video formats does youtube support?
that will be awesome if it has flash player or it can support flash player
Does Amazon have an mp3 store other than their full blown site available for us that use Windows Mobile devices? That would tight on my new Touch Diamond.
YOU MISSED THE POINT.
The headphone jack will come on the 3G model.
Let it be heard, boycott T-Mobile for Two reasons:
1) This phone and it's proprietary crap version of USB.
2) Their recent 1GB of data per month bandwidth cap.
Let the competition flourish. T-Mobile DIE!
you won't be hearing about any 3.5mm pwnge tool for this
Gotta admit, that is just a mini USB. You can pop in any mini USB cable (think MotoMING's, or ROKR, for eg.) FOR DATA. Then again, the adapters (WITH the mic for handsfree stravaganza) are being sold since that incident between Adam and the Snake... that is a long time ago, for those atheists! =)
Thanks for thinking of us boolean22 :)
Actually, that's not just a mini-USB connector. It's an extUSB connector, which is different.
To keep the thickness down... oh wait...
HTC was a massive FAIL in this phone. Obviously their hardware screwed up the Android lauch, not anything else.
Looks like MS paid them more than cheapass Google.... shockingly.
that's what she said
Strike 1
... in a binary system.
strike 2
The adapters are everywhere on the internet for two for $1.
But if HTC isn't packaging them into the retail boxes, that's a shame.
You can purchase one for only $19.99 at checkout... ships in 2-4 weeks...
enjoy!
Seriously. I looked these up weeks ago, because I'm considering the HTC Touch Pro. Doesn't bother me.
I have an adapter for my ATT Tilt right now.
These things are everywhere......
Just search for one.
lord, is this so hard to understand? I don't want to deal with having another piece of hardware to drag around, and with no viable excuse for having to do so, it's inexcusable.
Fail
The first time in ages that a "Fail" comment has truly been appropriate...no...required.
My excitement for the software is still there, but when this comes to Canada, I hope to hell it's on an improved device. Too bad, I really liked the form factor otherwise, despite being a bit bland.
i have an xda ignito (touch diamond) and it comes with a nice in line remote that plugs in to that port and has a headphones jack in it. its really good.
DAMN T-MOBILE. DAMN THEIR LACK OF 3.5MM JACK TO HELL!!!
It's not T-Mobile, it's HTC. I'd rather get stuck without a 3.5mm port than be stuck with Apple's proprietary docking port. Any regular USB still charges the ExtUSB port.
Goo job I'm not stuck and my iPod has both.
LOLOL
@ Alex. You've still got to have some adapter to fit that extUSB port for charging though, or a special extUSB to USB-A cable -- it's NO DIFFERENT than having to use the Apple iPod cable, which BTW is also USB. At least my old RAZR used a standard miniUSB port.
A standard miniUSB charger (like say Motorola RAZR) will charge this just fine. I know because I have a Sprint Mogul which is made by HTC and has the ext USB jack. I even sync my Mogul with the PC with the miniUSB cable.
@Jason
You're wrong. You CAN use a standard miniUSB cable to charge this phone. I have a HTC TyTN II and it uses the same port.
...Actually he's right.
EXT-USB is an enhanced MiniUSB: Standard miniUSB plugs will fit EXTUSB jacks, but not the other way around.
you can use that cable from your motorola, just not an HTC headphone adapter in your motorola.
FIRST!! I had wanted this phone so badly, but right now with the lack of exchange sync, the sim card hassle I talked to T-Mobile about, and now this, I think I'll just wait for the next gen Android phone. This isn't panning out to what I expected: An iPhone competitor on T-Mobile.
No rep has mentioned any hassle with SIM cards that I've talked to, what's the issue?
Remember... the iPhone didn't have Exchange support on day 1. I give the community 30 days to release an app to support it. Only if they can get it through Google's scrupulous app store.... WAIT! Google won't be killing any apps that isn't malware. Apple's app store is a lot like 1930's Germany.
When designing a killer phone, please don't kill it in the process.
Oh hi...it's for you. It's EPIC FAIL calling.
Fuck fuck fuck fuck.
I was waiting for this info and this is a huge deal breaker for me. Engadget, you can stop covering this device now. All the Android updates in the world won't let me use my IEMs on a regular jack. I'll wait for another Googlephone that gets it right.
Oops... double fail. No Exchange capability and no 3.5 mm headphone jack. I am soooo disappointed in T-Mobile, HTC, and Google. Looks like this was as overhyped as the iPhone.
I have a T-mobile dash with the same ExtUSB you can buy the adapter at wirelessground.com
this will definately seal the fate for any chance tmob had as far as gaining on the market share of the iPhone!
Boo...
Why?
1) Because google didn't ask for it. (see SE with the Experia, they wanted a 3,5 jack and HTC did it). No money = no fancy features.
2) Because HTC doesn't qive a flying fuck about google and android. 100% of their actual products are WM based and in the next year probbly 95% will still be WM based. HTC is using this android stuff just for marketing and too get their name out there IMO.
"No money = no fancy features." - Ike
Yes Ike, because everyone knows a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack is a "fancy feature."
Wow. Just wow.
Apparently it is a fancy feature if HTC fails to put it on their device... ie. it's certainly not standard.
"HTC is using this android stuff just for marketing and too get their name out there IMO." - Ike
By "getting their name out there" you mean putting out an ugly brick of a phone that doesn't even have a headphone jack so that the technorati will rant and rave and gnash their teeth about how lame the device (with their name on it) is, then i have to take my hat off to them. Pure marketing brilliance!!!
HTC: where even bad brand exposure is good brand exposure.
Maybe the speaker phone is sooooo goood, you dont need a headset. You can probably hear the base rumble
Or the bass rumble.
all your base rumble are belong to us.
My bass just hangs on the wall and sings
i went base fishing but i phailed
Deal breaker indeed. I respect music to much to use crap headphones or breakable and not easily replaceable dongles.
Oh, you respect *music* too much to use a dongle. And here I thought it was because you already owned headphones. Who are you kidding, dingDong?
--#
Youre right, my Denon AH D2000 headphones arent worthy of a dongle. The dongle is to good for them. ALL HAIL THE DONGLE!
Wouldn't D2000s be a waste on a phone?
to good or not to good that is the question
Yes, if I were to only use them with a phone. I guess its a good thing I have a computer, home stereo and other means. I use them when I listen to music.
don't you mean D2000s are a waste on pretentious "audiophile" twats like dBs?
dBs, is the cup holding up well?
So far so good. Im really careful with my stuff though, like OCD kinda careful lol. As far as twat, you would be right if I thought the equipment other people were using were crap and bad people for it. I flat out dont care what other people use for music. Its all in what people feel holds the best value for their money. Hell I use skullcandy earbuds for working out =P Wanted something expendable, thats what I felt was the best value given that need. I thank you for your concern though, friends dont let friends be twats.
wait. so let me get this straight, you need "expensive" headphones to listen to music encoded in basically the worst sounding audio format ever invented (an MP3)...?
music thanks you.
Music lover, what are my audio players? What phone/s am I using? If you dont even know that (all you know so far are my headphones), how can you presume to even know what audio formats Im using let alone their bitrates?
Music Lover, MP3 is only bad if encoded in 96 kbps. If encoded in 320 kbps, the difference between it and lossless is almost impossible to hear
...if you don't have 3.5 you NEED a2dp.or AT LEAST a bundled adapter/cable remote. PERIOD.
I honestly don't see A2DP a major necessity. If it was then it'd be on every single PMP out there by now, and no A2DP headphones I've used have been anywhere near some of the high quality wired headphones. So what's the big deal?
forget it now, that just kills it for. i was willing to tolerate the design of the phone but this nope. had my experience before with other HTC phones with the same crap port and its not pretty when you have to purchase a replacement and so forth just to enjoy your device. ill wait for the next gen android phone rather.
No A2DP, no stereo jack ... too bad for the "dream" ... but I think adapter for older devices will fit in ... I hope I won't break every week like it does in my "trinity" ...
Why couldnt the Touch HD be the flagship android phone... seriously..
I am a huge google and htc fan but this is bad.. its missing quite a bit of common features that all phone manufacturers should make standard
well good thing i can always use a2dp headphones... oh wait
Fuck this phone.
Google, you better dump HTC and find somebody who can make decent hardware with a jack we can use.
idiot.
i had really high hopes for this device, but now i dont know anymore. Just like everyone harps all over the iPhone's shortcomings, this device is no better. No A2DP, no video capture, and now they dont include a 3.5mm headphone jack?! I can only wonder what else will hurt this device..... Poor T-Mobile coverage (Not just the lack of 3G coverage), no copy and paste? ...... hopefully this device will light a fire under the ass of Steve Jobs to finally implement its lacking features in the iPhone. If you are looking for the iPhone killer, i wouldnt hold my breath
i couldn't agree with you more
Well I'm pretty sure it has Copy and Paste. Saw a "Copy Link Location" option during a video.
It's funny considering they've got Amazon backing them for all your music and video needs. But then again this is want you should t expect from HTC, they aren't really marketed to music and entertainment enthusiasts. Hopefully there will be music oriented Android device to come out soon.
Not to mention, without a desktop app and only 1GB stock RAM, what are you going to do with whatever you download from Amazon? Manually manage files? Swap memory cards?
I dont understand why did Google choose HTC Dream and not a bearable phone like HTC touch HD. The whole "First Android phone" is a waste. Rip-off of the new OS.
Key. Board.
I'm sure a touch-only device or 5 will be forthcoming within the next year or so.
I think Google wanted Android to be highly affordable being this is their first debut, I don't think the Touch HD would fit in just yet. Then again I could be wrong.
just cut off the buds that come on the standard headset and solder on your own why is that so freakin....say what?.....most people dont think its fun to have to make their own headphones?..... or cut apart the expensive headphones that would actually sound good?...... .well......you always have the dongle right?........whats that?....slips out easy because of the added weight?.........oh
