Oh man, just look at that. Soft, rich, leather-wrapped 16x DVD-Rs and 2x DRD-RWs -- guaranteed to make your data more creamy and you more socially awkward. Available October 25th in Japan for an undisclosed price.
The problem I see here is that leather is not perfectly smooth, which means that every single one of these disks is going to be unbalanced. Half the disks will end up being coasters and the rest will need to burn at 1x.
My iMac's drive mechanism has gotten so sensitive that I can't even put commercial dvds in it because of the often smooth label. One of these in my drive would get stuck for sure.
But did you not know that cows and other livestock produce methane, which inturn is bad for the eviroment. there are studies going on at the moment in the UK to see if we redueced the number of livestock, if it would be possalbe to reduce the damage on the ozone.
I think you have a point here... Let's all move to environmentally friendly USB sticks, with no toxics inside! Or, we could send our files over 3G networks. That's SO green!
I'm pretty sure you are not the only person that can think of that problem. And a big company like Maxell must have thought about it by using some sort of heat resistant adhesive. If not... well... I wonder how a company like Maxell can become big...
Well that's one way to insult Sir Paul McCartney, as he is vegan, infact George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr and even Yoko Ono are and were vegetarian too.
Cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys and several other animals taste very yummy to me. Humans have been eating meat for 100Ks of years. We are not going to stop. Give it up. Just give it up. Seriously.
Stiv, you can argue that you will not stop eating animals because they taste good to you, but you cannot say it is right because "humans have been eating meat for 100Ks of years". That is bullsh**. Humans have been slaving and discriminating black people for thousand of years, and that does not make these actions right (or good).
As you can see, it takes more than "100Ks of years" to humans realize that their actions, tasting or not good, have consequences. It can be drinking milk, eating meat or even buying leather cds.
Unless you raise cows for living, there is no reason for you to state against people who ask others to eat more vegetable or to kill less animals.
[english is not my mother language, so please forgive any mistake]
damn! there was me utterly convinced i was being unique as well!
another bubble burst.
i shall endeavour to only ever participate in a discussion if i can only utter a combination of words that no man nor beast has ever encountered before.
please forgive me.
gadzooks i feel such an idiot for bringing that up now.
hey!!!
hold on a minute!!!
i just noticed that you stated that real leather would be more expensive than synthetic!!
i swear i thought that!!!!
thing is... i didnt take the time to bother throwing that nugget out there...
How dated? It reminds me of the leather case that came with my phone. I mailed it back to HTC just to show my disgust. What a waist of an animal - future generations are gonna look back at this sort of stuff and be amazed.
We're eating millions of cows every day no matter what, there's plenty of excess cheap leather that would just be thrown away. It's not like they selected and killed an animal just for your phone case.
Since the case says 'For video recording use' and '120 mins' at the top, I'd assume this is for important events like wedding videos, children's plays and concerts, or corporate awards ceremonies. Just so you know it's an important video and under no circumstances is it to be discarded.
For things like the aforementioned, I think I might be interested in these discs. Not to backup trivial stuff, but to make and/or gift an important event on DVD-video.
@Stiv who wrote "Cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys and several other animals taste very yummy to me. Humans have been eating meat for 100Ks of years. We are not going to stop. Give it up. Just give it up. Seriously."
Firstly, apparently human meat has the taste and texture of beef, except a little sweeter but despite it being seemingly "yummy" I wouldn't want to eat it. Secondly, the early ancestors of modern humans, from at least 4 million years ago, followed diets almost exclusively of plant-foods. Beginning at least 250,000 years ago, many of the hunter-gatherer societies consumed meat as a large part of their diet. However, more recently, over the past 12,000 years of agricultural development, people’s diets have been mostly based upon starches, like rice in Asia, corn in North America, potatoes in western parts of South America, wheat in Europe and Northern Africa.
But the fact is that we are omnivorous and can eat meat but it is certainly not healthy (we are not capable of metabolizing cholesterol in meat and therefore risk heart disease the more we eat) nor is it natural. This is best evident when comparing our teeth with primates who have basically vegetarian diets. We humans also don't have claws and I could go on for hours on this topic but simply ask yourself would you be capable of jumping on a large cow, knocking it to the ground and taking a large bite from its rear hind? Of course not, why? Because you are not a carnivore.
"would you be capable of jumping on a large cow, knocking it to the ground and taking a large bite from its rear hind?"
With these wonderful things called tools we are. You could make the same argument about living in cold climates or even using the internets or flying. And hell, our closest living relatives, chimpanzees, eat termites and hunt other animals for food.
And human flesh tastes more like pork, not beef.
How about trying this...not trying to force your life style on other people and we won't try to convince you to eat meat?
You are a dumbass liberal tree hugger. You even believe that the world is 4 million years old which strengthens my statement. Meat has PROTEIN. That's good for you.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
There has to be a better use of cow skin
the BS Digital logo on the cover is very telling!
...surely that's buckskin and not that other BS.
sit on it
there has to be a better use of hippies!
It's probably leatherette not real leather.

Henry Winkler has to eat somehow. Or does the network own his likeness and image. In any case, Mr and Mrs C would be proud.
... He(n)ry Winkler! hehe
All for storing your fetish & bondage pr0n. Cuz the latex is sooo 1990.
/me puts Paul McCartney / Beatles collection onto some ..
Moo Moo Maxell's leather label went down on the DVD..do-do-do
Sorry, it's a NO-GO for me. Discs like these are no good for slot-loading drives.
You think so? I thought it would work just fine.
I could be wrong though...
Well even if it is, there still are some technical issues.
What happens if it gets hot, eg in your car's stereo, or an overheating iMac with slot loading drive?
My iMac's drive mechanism has gotten so sensitive that I can't even put commercial dvds in it because of the often smooth label. One of these in my drive would get stuck for sure.
16x DVD-R
So if your burn failed, what do you do with the leather?
FAIL more discs ..
make a purse of the ripped off leather and sell as designer purse ;)
More leather rubbish from Japan. When are the Japanese going to realize that using cows is simply bad for the environment and unsustainable.

I'm going to go buy some beef now! BRB.
Synthetic leather maybe? Otherwise the cost is gonna be astronomical with real leather skin.
But did you not know that cows and other livestock produce methane, which inturn is bad for the eviroment. there are studies going on at the moment in the UK to see if we redueced the number of livestock, if it would be possalbe to reduce the damage on the ozone.
So it you want to be green buy these CD's

Shut up and have another cheeseburger.
not only that.... the heat from the drive will undoubtedly melt the glue on the leather...
imagine how much of an arse yud feel ejecting one of these bad boys and the skin half peeling off making everything go yuck...
hmmm i wonder how much you could sue a big company like maxell for...
I'm pretty sure you are not the only person that can think of that problem.

i can think of some more effective ways to insult old macca
maybe starting with his face on his latest album's artwork...
the longer i look at it, the more it does for me

If I got enough frisbees I can finaly do the long planned carpimping of the seats of my '81 Azura.
Broken CD-Rom curtains are soooo out!
Probably an undisclosed price because nobody would admit to buying them. Hence, nobody "knows" the price.

Get ready for more needless leather use.
Does this mean that Maxell is about to jump the shark?
We're eating millions of cows every day no matter what, there's plenty of excess cheap leather that would just be thrown away. It's not like they selected and killed an animal just for your phone case.
engadget forgot to mention: synthetic leather
I would expect these to just be several layers of paint with a texture effect on the top surface, akin to TuffDisc
Aayy?
Eh?
Eh!
Eek!
some discs don't play when they have a small label on them.. how's this going to work when they have a large leather label on them? teh failz
lol, its so ridiculous...i want it:(

No one cares. Stop trying to convince people what to do.
