Hold onto your hats, Motorola fans! As the launch of the nation's first mobile
WiMAX network (hopefully) draws near, the company's announcing its first ever USB
WiMAX device, the USBw 100. This thumb-drive-sized slice of heaven will be available in three flavors, providing high-speed mobile broadband on your 2.3GHz, 2.5GHz or 3.5 GHz network. No pics, pricing or definite release date yet, just the vague promise that we'll be seeing her in the fourth quarter of this year. We're all giddy in anticipation.
Kewl.

theres a pool on the roof...
:P I already has WiMax in the great white north:P
But no one at either of the companys providing subscriptions seems to know how to set it up on anything but their own modems.
@edward
i think bell & rogers have some sort of modified wimax network... and it seems to be half useless anyway. wherever you'd get good coverage your almost better off with evdo revA or hspa
screw wimax
LTE all the way

WiMax and the Gizmondo have just about the same shot of being truly successful.
Good timing. I should be testing Xohm in 3 weeks so this is right on time.
This article isn't seriously implying that there's a different model for each band frequency, is it?
Mobile WiMAX is no different than GSM in the sense that there are multiple bands an operator can choose to deploy its network. If you are familiar with the whole 850/900/1800/1700/1900/2100 thing going on for the various voice and data services, this is a reduced version of that.
Not bad, since first comers will set the standard and will pave the way for a lot of interesting mobile broadband devices.
Keep your eyes open guys, this is going to be very very cool..
There are three "standard" bandplans, and this (and many first-generation wiMAX devices) will be single band. On the bright side, dual and triband devices will be coming, probably before coverage becomes feasible for most people. These are just something for the early adopters.
What upload/download speed are these networks going to be operating at? Are they going to be significantly faster than what Clearwire operates now?
I'm currently using rogers portable.
It runs at 1.5mbit down 256k up (theoretically)
In reality it runs at around 700k down and i haven't tested the up speed yet.
It varies greatly on the modem position.
I bought it because I move alot and can't wait for a DSL hook up every 4 months. I think I am in a very small market tbh, as this modem is far too big to be 'portable' in the sense than a cellphone is 'portable'
I wish I coulda gotten my hands on one of this babies though.
One of the most valuable things about the whole deal is the fact that, if i really wanted to, I could take the modem with me and get access anywhere. Sure it would be a pain, but if i'm going somewhere for a week, getting internet is not a problem at all, which is great.
Isn't that what Verizon 3G runs at?
WANT!
Worldmax has (one of) the first mobile IEEE 802.16E WiMAX network live!
They offer Prepaid subscriptions via the inhouse isp aerea.nl, they covered the city of amsterdam, works great!
their planning to go nation wide.
people who cheer about LTE don't know what their talking about. it's al in the definition 'Long Term Evolution', what is that? it's certainly not a protocol or network or something real. let's al cheer for 'future' and say it's better than 'now'????
imagine this:
sales: good day sir, how do want your internet access; DSL, Wimax or HSDPA?
prospect: no i want Long Term Evolution
sales: what is that sir?
customer: uhm, the evolution?
sales: the evolution of what sir? how fast is it? what network or protocol is it? how can we measure this , and what's the product sir?
Customer: ............uhm..................... it's the future......?
hahahaha what a crap
Hey there chap. I also live in Amsterdam. I have no idea where to buy an 802.16e PCMCIA card or USB dongle.
Can you help me?
Thanks in regard,
Pieter
If that a picture of the actual product I'd ask for a little more effort on the looks perhaps. (simply not using dull grey for the logo would already do wonders for starters)
It's odd because motorola isn't the worst in designing the looks of their devices I think.

Where can I buy this thing! I want one!
