T-Mobile G1 site goes live for real, first ad appears
The T-Mobile G1 web site went up with a bunch of placeholders late last night, but it's finally fully live after this morning's big unveiling, and while it's not exactly bursting with detailed info, there's plenty of new pictures and details, including updated 3G coverage information. The first G1 ad has also surfaced -- if you were tearing your hair out over Apple's grammatically-questionable "funnest iPod ever" pitch, wait'll you get a load of how "smarterer," "connecteder," and yes, "funnerer" the "most exciting phone in the history of phones" will make you. Video after the break.

I didn't know one could be so tongue in cheek when biting at an Apple.

The release event was crappy. It was full of bad jokes, bad commercials, and some parts felt like an anti-drug video.

"If your total data usage in any billing cycle is more than 1GB, your data throughput for the remainder of that cycle may be reduced to 50 kbps or less."
Besides that I'm in love...
Adam @ Sep 23rd 2008 2:43PM
Yeah, I'm with you. I really like it and since I can't tether it I probably wouldn't go over 1GB. However, I don't like this (along with the no tethering) when the execs stand on stage the same day and say "we're not going to tell you no." Really?
Again, not surprised just disappointed.
Also, REALLY disappointed that they aren't using the standard headphone jack. How very Apple of them. Hell, even Apple relented on that one.
thedesolate1 @ Sep 23rd 2008 11:56PM
Okay i don't know about you guys but any1 who has every had AT&T data knows what a burden unlimited data can be on the 3G network if it is not rolled out properly and the kinks are ironed out first. I would rather have a 1GB data cap than unlimited data that is unstable and full of bugs. I think T Mobile is learning from ATT's mistakes. I am sure once the network is built up properly and has evolved they will raise the limit. ATT's 3G coverage is inconsistent and shoddy at best. I have seen numerous instances in witch 3G phones dont even work with voice for days on end. Imagine if that happened to you during a state of emergency?
Mr.Ortiz @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:35PM
has anyone figured out where the headphones go yet?
Vulier @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:36PM
I usually just put it wherever it fits...
Mr.Ortiz @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:54PM
Cute, but the correct answer appears to be that there is no standard headphone jack:
http://www.htc.com/www/product/g1/specification.html
Uses a proprietary HTC ExtUSB™ connector instead. The good news is it comes with stereo headphones (pretty sure it said so on the details page before I pre-ordered, but the t-mobile site stupidly doesn't let you see the product details anymore once you place your order)
k4ffy @ Sep 23rd 2008 1:35PM
whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
kjb434 @ Sep 23rd 2008 1:40PM
There is also a short adapter you can purchase that allows a standard 3.5mm headphone jack to plug into HTC phones with this connection. I should know, I have one for my ATT Tilt.
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Sep 23rd 2008 1:53PM
kjb,
Yeah but that's annoying as hell. I have a stupid $15 adapter to make my Shures work with my iPhone. And now it's busted so I get crappy audio quality.
Time to buy another one...
So yeah, having no standard 3.5mm headphone jack doesn't make it impossible to listen to music on your phone. It just makes it a pain in the ass.
EmoChicksAreHot.....Seriously @ Sep 23rd 2008 4:57PM
Really guys?
No one even hints at something perverted by Vulier's comment?
Damn.

I dont know if anyone will care about this phone unless they are super nerds like us.
fh @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:41PM
You don't have to be a super nerd to care about google.
--------- @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:55PM
I know I'm in the minority around here, but I think the G1 and iPhone are consumer smartphones. BBs are for business and WM phones are still the "super nerd" phones.
Let go of any brand loyalty and compare the features and capabilities, then tell me I'm wrong...
Jubei @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:37PM
Brought to you by "me too" HTC. No wonder they pilfered Apples own play with the word fun. Apple leads all else follows.

Taylor @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:50PM
Good point, what with HTC having made phones in this form factor for years before Apple made anything...
Oh wait, STFU, no one wants to hear you.

Apple leads and others follow? Please! I will give Apple partial credit for leading in mobile phone UI design but their operating systems have always followed others. Apple MACs initial operating systems were no better than Windows 3.0 with regards to task switching vs true preemptive multitasking. Only after the crappy task switching MAC OS was aborted and transplanted with BSD Unix, did they have a respectable OS under the hood. The OS under the hood of the current iPhone models follows the same crappy task switching design as the pre-Unix MACs. Hell even my 2007 era Symbian Nokia E90 can do true multitasking (i.e. listen to an MP3 while recording a video) If I seem irritated, I am. I'm a "no contract" T-Mobile customer and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay $299+ for the HTC G1. I'll keep my E90 until something better comes along that surpasses the E90's features. I can live without a touch UI for another year I suppose.
Silver R. Wolfe @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:36PM
I actually like the ad. Very stylish and nifteh. At least they stuck to the theme of the -er throughout. That makes me happierer.
bblboy54 @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:37PM
Im excited but a little pissed.... they said only existing customers could order the phone at this point and that it was the $179 price... however, it seems that new customers are ordering the phone NOW for the $179 price and all of the existing customers are getting hit with a $299 price. This is VERY bad business.... Way to say "we care about our loyal customers" ....
http://blog.bibleboy.org/2008/09/t-mobile-g1-good-t-mobile-eh.html
Still, I'm excited to get the phone...... It really looks awesome!
George @ Sep 23rd 2008 1:47PM
I just paid 179.99 for the phone and I'm a t-mobile customer. I believe it's 300.00 if you are in the middle of a contract (haven't made it to the upgrade period).
Jeremy K. @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:45PM
Here's to hoping that they just need to update the site for the extra $120 MIR. Or maybe it has to do with contracts. Has anyone who is out of contract tried ordering one?
Let's not jump the boat on how bad T-Mobile is until we're completely sure how much the phone will really cost. It's only been 2 hours! haha
leesa @ Sep 23rd 2008 1:23PM
i called them. its $299 for existing customers. period.
i asked if it was because i wasn't eligible for an upgrade right now and the guy had no idea. also didn't know if it would be available in white. also wasn't able to explain the "required" data plan. i wanted to know if the phone wouldn't function at all without the data plan and he didn't know.
they knew absolutely zero in other words. well except that loyal customers get a whopping $100 discount off the $399 price.
i want to know: after this "special pricing period" will i not get the $100 discount even?
George @ Sep 23rd 2008 1:49PM
Login to you my-tombile account, there will be an image of the g-phone, 'get more info', you can buy from there for 179.99. They also charge 14.00 to upgrade, a data plan is required.
Japhy @ Sep 23rd 2008 6:09PM
I just ordered it for 179 and am an existing customer. You have to be out of your current phone contract to get that price, though. The process is really simple for existing customers on the website.
anderson @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:43PM
looks kinda ugly
Matthew @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:38PM
The look of the front of the G1 always reminds me of an iPhone/touch with an FM transmitter connected. It will be interesting to see what the Open source will do for this phone. That is the only appealing thing this phone has (besids all of the maps, and GPS apps that will come out) in my opinion.
Outinthedark @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:39PM
Gotta say all this coverage is really tempting me to upgrade my phone. HTC phones are looking amazing.
Raphael Salgado @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:39PM
Just another nail in the coffin for Verizon, AFAIC. Good for T-Mobile. Now that 3G is in effect and quite fast and consistent (I beta-tested, so I was quite surprised how well it was), all they needed was a "Sidekick Pro" for grown-ups. This is it. I'm with AT&T and my iPhone 3G for multiple reasons and for the time being, so I'm curious to see how this plays out.
Namco PAC-MAN for free on the G1? Yet they gouge iPhone users for $10? Pfft.
Zak @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:54PM
To be clear on that point, the DEVELOPER sets the prices for their apps on the app store for the iPhone, not Apple. And yes, $10 for Pac-Man is a ripoff.
Rick @ Sep 23rd 2008 7:21PM
I just don't care for side way keyboard sliders and the slanted bottom section just looks poorly designed. Yes, it may be perfect for some, I guess I'm one of the few that just doesn't care for the physical design.

When will it end!!!:?!?!??! I hate Apple but seriously, all this ripping off only solidifys their stance as the dominant brainwashing company in the world. iThis and iThat came first. im surprised they didnt call i the iG1. Then, to pick up on the lamest marketing ploy in a keynote presentation (aside from Wii Music) in exploiting horrible grammar is just ridiculous.
