Sony Ericsson's MBW-200 Bluetooth watches for sporty she-geeks
When a press release is laced with words like "handbag," "sophisticated," and "vibrates," it's clearly targeting the fairer sex. Sony Ericsson's new MBW-200 watches display caller ID and rumble on the wrist when a call comes in to your Bluetooth connected cellphone. You can then reject or mute the call directly from the watch. The Fossil designed, glare- and scratch-resistant time keepers come in three versions -- Sparkling Allure, Contemporary Elegance and Evening Classic. Each is modeled above by three tennis players for not so obvious reasons. Available in Q4 for an undisclosed price. A few more pics after the break.

Khattab @ Sep 24th 2008 4:39AM
Yep, I did, yesterday evening.
This is the link I mentioned: http://semcblog.com/2008/09/24/mbw-200/
@gad get: The second and third watch is also aimed at men, as my link states.
Thomas Ricker @ Sep 24th 2008 4:56AM
No record of it, though another editor may have deleted. I'll hook you up with VIA link love anyway since you've got the pics SE doesn't seem willing to provide. Thx!
Thomas

Thx, appreciate it.
gad get @ Sep 24th 2008 4:27AM
Well, if those hot tennis players wear them, then why shouldn't I? (Other than being male and straight.)
william @ Sep 24th 2008 4:38AM
pretty nice...
oh yeah, the watch thing is cool too.
omnicloud @ Sep 24th 2008 4:46AM
Sporty she-geek is the oxymoron of the year.
Raheem @ Sep 24th 2008 5:08AM
Cue the horny nerds.
Cash @ Sep 24th 2008 5:28AM
wasn't SE supposed to release a trio of Bluetooth enabled mens watches last year, yet never did? Are these three going to fade into the ether like those before them as well?

Stan @ Sep 24th 2008 8:44AM
Yes they did. MBW-150's they are available from a number of sites and storest. http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/accessories/overview/mbw-150executiveedition?cc=ca&lc=en#specifications The issue then was it was not very compatible with WM phones but there is a new app for WM called btwatch that fixes that issue. There's a review at Mobileburn.com btwatch can be found here http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Enhancements/btWatch-58728.shtml
The watches are more than just caller id, they are bluetooth remote controls for the music players that support the remote control spec and they will vibrate to tell you that you've left your phone behind. They will notifiy you of SMS, picture messages, calls, email and calendar events. see this youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4YEhkTDRVY

The idea may be nice, but the implementation is aesthetically horrible. What is that rectangle stamped on the watch face? Looks like an afterthought. It even crosses the internal circle.
Harry Wagstaff @ Sep 24th 2008 6:23AM
Lets be honest, it just looks like they've photoshopped a crappy caller ID LCD display onto the front of each watch.
gad get @ Sep 24th 2008 6:51AM
Ugh... I hadn't even noticed that until you mentioned it. Oh, I wish I could un-notice it! Who designed that face?
nikster @ Sep 24th 2008 9:32AM
Agreed on the design.
One thing about the photos - I sure hope those watches show the NAMES of the caller rather than the number. Who in the world remembers phone numbers??
08SI @ Sep 24th 2008 5:33AM
I'll take the one in the middle :-)....
Erol @ Sep 24th 2008 7:00AM
I want the one on the right. Is she still available?
Galley @ Sep 24th 2008 8:38AM
I'm not that picky. I'l take whatever's left over.
Chad @ Sep 24th 2008 9:40AM
Am I the only one that thinks they could have found some hotter models?
alexmueller @ Sep 24th 2008 11:54AM
@Chad
Yes
mayq @ Sep 24th 2008 5:47AM
the lcd display looks like it has been tacked on to the watch
Benson @ Sep 24th 2008 5:47AM
Maybe I'm just stupid, but what makes them geeks? They don't look like any geeks I ever saw, even after deconvolution with a female filter.
nikster @ Sep 24th 2008 9:33AM
We wish they were geeks, OK? In reality they are models dating cool artists. Oh well.
j.d.ripper @ Sep 24th 2008 7:05AM
Nice !
The three girls I mean, not the watches.
Hguh @ Sep 24th 2008 7:38AM
LOLd @ "vibrates" meaning wimmin must be the target audience hahaha
Crayola @ Sep 24th 2008 8:29AM
Are you guys insane? Those watches like totally clash with the outfit, and duh! Who want to wear such lesbian casio!
marcus b @ Sep 24th 2008 8:53AM
SonyEricsson is the main sponsor of womens tennis and especially the official sponsor of WTA, the womens tour. That's probably why.
tatarynowicz @ Sep 24th 2008 10:49AM
How about: they needed big, sporty girls with strong arms and big hands so that those watches don't seem as huge as they actually are?
master811 @ Sep 24th 2008 10:05AM
And I bet the battery life is still amazing.
/sarcasm
I couldn't face having to recharge my watch every day.
Benson @ Sep 24th 2008 10:18AM
I know; that's the one thing that bothers me. I have a Casio solar atomic-synced watch, and I have to charge it (leave it near a light bulb overnight) about once a month in winter, and that's irritating. The only thing that could make it worth charging my watch every night is a watchphone, but I haven't yet found a good, affordable, EDGE+DUN watchphone.
With this, you get a little functionality for all of the hassle. Not good.
matthewmrussell @ Sep 24th 2008 10:16AM
Yeah, no one is going to buy this. People hardly use watches these days (I mean, I do) and if they do use a watch they want one they dont need to recharge.
Woman ask men to buy them rocks the size of a skittle that cost thousands of dollars. You really think they want a bluetooth watch? You are out of your mind. Sony, why is your head so far up your ass?
They look like crap too, it had to be said.
Matt @ Sep 24th 2008 11:28AM
Nice to see the Dixie Chicks come out in support of geek wear. Just the kind of endorsement that market segment has been waiting for.
David @ Sep 24th 2008 1:36PM
I've got the MBW-150. It really is one of the most useful gadgets I ever bought. I even gave up my Bell & Ross watch for the convenience the MBW-150 provides. I agree that the OLED display does look tacked on, and they could definitely do a nicer design. Still it's extremely useful to get messages in meetings, or while driving - it's so easy to see the caller name on the watch. Specially with moneytoo over at xda-developers.com have ported it to Windows Mobile developed the app smartWatchM and added some 40 functions inculding the following:
Set time from phone
Message not. on/off
SMS notification
MMS notification
E-mail notification
New message type
Appointment notif.
Missed call notif.
Voicemail notif.
Notification repeat
Incoming call not.
Caller identification
Caller logo/picture
Silent ringing phone
Hang up call
Out of reach
Music player control
Phone battery, signal
Weather
Tasks info
Last call info
Operator, Profile
Stopwatch
RSS feeds
Cell Broadcast
Phone RAM info
E-mail send/receive
SMS text/sender
E-mail text/sender
IM (ICQ, MSN...)
Furthermore 5 button push combinations are user programmable and can be coupled with sofware allowing you to send pre-tailored sms messages, turn of the screen of your phone from the watch etc etc. I charge the OLED panel/BT once a week.
All in all a great tool.
