Never one to settle,
Art Lebedev's design shop is trying its hand at handset design, and we like the looks of it. Art is teaming up with Scartel, a Russian carrier which just launched a WiMax network in Moscow and St. Petersburg, for a flagship handset of sorts, and has left no spec unturned -- at least in the wishful-thinking conceptual stage. In addition to a WiMax radio, the device has WiFi, tri-band GSM, microSD, dual cameras, 3.5mm audio, an A/V plug and a gargantuan 850 x 480 screen. There are minimal buttons at the base: a five-way joystick and call / end, and no keypad, so we're going to assume that we're looking at a touchscreen device. Now all that's left is to pick an OS -- would Android be too much to ask? Another shot is after the fold.

Even though my smartphone has a touch screen, I still frequently use the directional pad below it. There are two reasons for this: first of all I find it far more convenient when controlling the device in a one-handed fashion, and then also because it lets me turn off the screen completely while playing music (extending battery life).
Could this company be the new Apple? Cool designs with outrageous prices!
...or the old Apple? This device seems to take a lot of its design cues from the Newton Message Pad 2000..... though I'm sure its significantly smaller (it would want to be: those Newtons were the size of paving tiles!)
Want. A. 850/2100 HSDPA. Version. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!
it looks quite generic to me. what i dont get is why the G1 is supposedly ugly and too fat but this is considered nice and slick? more screen space = sexier?
More screen space = who the fuck cares about sexy?!
Sure you can!
You just have to sell everything you own and borrow all the money your friends have!
The down side is, that you have to run away to some tiny island where you wont be found by your friends...
In Soviet Russia...
That joystick is going to rub against your chin. That will be fun!
Holy crap 2 cameras!
Funny part is you all american are complaining about its availability date :
"blablabla in 2019 for 30 k$ blablbla"
But you don't even have a good 3G network and I'm not talking about Wimax LOL.
So please get wimax somewhere else than already-wifi-covered-zone and then we'll talk about that device.
If this stuff lands in the U.S.A in let's say nov./dec. 2010 it will be just fine considering how long it is taking to build up a wimax network.
oh and I don't think it's gonna be that expensive, seriously there not much more in this than in a touch HD, execpt for the wimax ship that shouldn't be that expensive.
oled crap too maybe..
But you are forgetting that the majority of the price is that sticker with the brand on it...
ooo ooooo ooooo ahhhhh
was it good for you to?
Art's really good at that concept stuff, isn't he.
That's the phone TMobile should have launched for Android. It's much easier on the eyes than that abysmal looking G1 they have been showing off the last couple of days. Hopefully Art goes with Android and can partner with a carrier in the US so we can finally see some attractive competition for the iPhone.
anybody who knows lebdev knows that they aren't able to deliver a product like that. they make nice renderings, but the products are utter crap. and a 3G handset is way over their head. they wouldnt even find suppliers for the components in russia. i think it's rediculous how engadget jumps on this. they should know better.
Phones like this one need TEGRA to make sense. No one likes a choppy HD video.
What a odd place to put a jack socket
Hm. How big? 840x480 isn't gargantuan for resolution, that's only slightly bigger than a Nokia IT. But the diagonal size might be bigger.
Wish it had some form of keyboard.
Don't like the joystick -- old Nokia's learned from that mistake, dpad's are better.
Do like the dual cameras (I only have use for a picture camera, but I know some want to have chat cams).
Think pairing WiMAX and GSM is an interesting idea. GSM for basic and ubiquitous connectivity, WiMAX for 4G. Though, why only triband instead of quadband?
It'd be interesting to see if they go for Android.
If this is for a Russian carrier then why are all the markings in English? Surely they're going to sell it in the rest of the world!
I don't know, I kind of feel like the Touch HD looks a bit sleeker and will probably cost a lot less and come out a long time before this will, but who knows, this could end up being a good phone and the design could always change some.
weird idea to put the audio plug on the bottom right, think in your pocket, the wire will bend etc... volume button same as iphone (one or two round close), hold button same, etc.. smell like intern concept work no real new idea...
;P
Hooray, a Clit Mouse on a cell phone! From XKCD: http://xkcd.com/243/
Just beautiful. That could be my next phone :-)
I don't understand why everyone loses their mind eveytime so dipwad decides they're the first to create a thin slab of flatscreen telecom. There have been tons of devices propsed, that never see the light of day.
Not that I hope that this is one of them, but anyone can say they'll pump their plaque full of awesome, but no one asks if anyonethinks its a good idea.
For example - a camera phone with a shit camera, or a music phone with terrible sound quality via loudspeaker.
I appreciate the article, but everytime I hear, "innovative art-something" it always is something everyone's done, or is incredibly shortsighted (see flying chinese star of party land).
