Samsung spits out second 8-megapixel mobile, christens it "Pixon"
Hot on the INNOV8's trails comes another 8-megapixel phone out of Samsung's frighteningly fast-paced labs, this one dubbed M8800 Pixon (is it just us, or does that sound like a great name for an alien life form?). They're really mixing it up here, too -- unlike the S60-based INNOV8, the Pixon packs a full-on 400 x 240 touchscreen and settles for Samsung's proprietary non-smartphone platform. The OS seems to be the only place it's settling, though, since we've got triband HSDPA, GPS, an FM radio, microSD expansion -- and, oh yeah, there's the little matter of that whopping cam with face detection, geotagging, and WVGA video recording. Sadly there's no WiFi on board, but it'd be just a little less useful than normal without an honest-to-goodness smartphone OS as your playground -- and at least you've got global 3G on your side. It looks like we can expect shipments of this one sometime in November for €550 (about $805).

Looks nice. =]
I'm pretty sure any device would look nice in dewy green grass like that.
i see no dew. you lie like a rug
lol kojo. i havent heard that in years.
the grass looks dry and crunchy. at least it looks nothing like this.

Actually looks great...
What OS is it gonna run? Or is it not classified as a smart phone?
3rd line: "...and settles for Samsung's proprietary non-smartphone platform."

Thanks.
Could it get any more beautiful?
I've heard if you brand it with an Apple it sells better... But no.
to who?
I heard you make it 2 megapixels and it sells even better.
it smells like freshly cut grass, with a hint of lemon, strewn over a babbling brook in the spring time
I see what you did there
Android and TMobile
HELOOOOO Sexy!
Where is the freakin Samsung Omnia.. I Can't decide if I want the Omnia, iphone or the G1!!
You're actually debating that? lol.
If not for AT&T, I'd just go with the iPhone. Android isn't up to spec yet (plus T-mobile is just blah).
Omnia? Maybe..
But seriously, I think the iPhone is probably the better out of those... (and I'm by no means a fanboy, I'm planning on getting a BB Storm)
@Technophile
Fanboy.
I'm still waiting for that. I want to get my hands on the US model so I can decide if I really want it as much as I think I do.
Having used both the Omnia and the iPhone I went for the former, however be prepared to flash to ROM to get one you're happy with.
The iPhone's nice but it just so limited.
No thanks.
This is why i enjoy HTC and Apple. They release minimal models. Samsung pump out one after another, none better than the last, all just ever so slightly different. (Before a smart ass picks me up on it, im well aware HTC alter designs for different carriers, im talking about HTC's own lineup)
Cant they stick to one design and improve on it for once instead of simply replacing it with 3000 new models?
Its partly why the iPhone has garnered so much attention and praise. Timeless design and its something that is worked on to make it the best device possible. Just like the iPod, it gets better and better.
People get emotionally attached to their devices and this creates loyalty to the brand, but when you pump one after another, whats the point?
BTW im not an iPhone fanboy, i own a HTC Touch Cruise.
I knew I didn't jump on the iPhone wagon for a reason, that's a pretty neat phone, pack a punch and sounds like better specs than an iPhone!
Is it's camera in that top left corner? If so, that's some pretty fail design.
That's the front-facing camera, the 8 MP camera is on the back, like a normal phone.
Of course if you took the time to read about the phone before you just spout unwarranted criticism then you would have known that, avoid this whole discourse.
Note to ChaosEntity17,
Get a clue!
Uh... are you serious.. welcome to 2008!
Doesn't a price equivalent of over £400 seem a little high to anyone? I can't speak for Americans, but in the UK that's N95 territory.
Also, 400x320 is a bit shitty, I'd expect atleast VGA by now.
Every time a new phone is shown i keep thinking that i just want a HTC Touch Pro for Verizon. Well one that didn't have dumb down specs. :(
i just love that phone. it’s so cool! i have one…you’ll be amazed by its capability to aid you in creating your own sound files..even with background music using a guitar or keyboard…and you could play songs while using any application except if the application needs to play a different sound…and so handy…so many shortcuts buttons…so amazing.

I wonder what that battery is going to be like. With an 8MP camera and features of standalone digicams, I hope it's nothing like the N95 or LG Viewty. Of course you can just purchase an extra battery.
I wonder why the editor chose to use GoogleTranslate instead of linking to the English-language mirror of mobile@mail.ru:

Shiny screen looks good.
You do realise that they release new ROMs for it, right?
Ooooooo... LOOK what I found in my yard!
I don't really get it. The specs look great, but with no wifi or smart phone features, what's the point? Seems like this is going to be a lot of money just to have a good camera/phone combo. Sure, it looks good... am I missing something?
F*ck the ugly G1 I'm getting this.
Hey Engadget, will you please avoid using theologically-charged words such as "christens" in your titles? Unless you're bent on offending your many atheist and non-christian readers, I see no reason to involve religion with technology...
i definitely skimmed over the article but i definitely saw that there was no wifi for 800+ dollars... why?
