SanDisk's 16GB microSDHC card slips into retail, T-Mobile's G1
Shhh, keep this on the down low: SanDisk's 16GB microSDHC card is now available for purchase -- the first to reach that capacity. At the moment, it's only been spotted at a few on-line shops in the UK for round-about £45 with VAT (about $70 pre-tax in the US). Exactly what you need for your new T-Mobile G1. Hey Sandisk, you want to chime in and make this official or what?

its 3am in Socal - do you know where your children are?
Thomas Ricker @ Sep 25th 2008 6:33AM
It's 5AM, and you are listening... to Los Angeles
avester @ Sep 25th 2008 6:19AM
I'm a bit worried about the speeds of that thing.
strider_mt2k @ Sep 25th 2008 7:40AM
I don't know if worried is the thing to be.
Sandisk tends to make slow cards.
I've found them to be reliable, but slow.
You'll pay a premium for their SDHC Class 6 stuff too, if and when and where they have it.
Flashpoint @ Sep 25th 2008 9:22AM
SIMPLE FACT
access/transfer rates of these cards is not as fast as an SSD like that in the iPhone.
So far, I've seen nothing which warrants purchasing this phone.
chefgon_ign @ Sep 25th 2008 9:56AM
SIMPLE FACT
Even a really slow SD card will load a music track pretty much instantly.

"So far, I've seen nothing which warrants purchasing this phone"
You never will because you are a professional hater. Seriously, every time I read one of your comments I can't help but picture you wearing fur and toting a cane a la Chappells’s Player Hater Awards.
Rob Bourne @ Sep 25th 2008 6:27AM
Sweet, not a bad price either. I was expecting it to be some kind of stupid UK price.
LondonConsultant @ Sep 25th 2008 7:02AM
Yep, £45 is surprisingly cheap for 16GB microSDHC. Looking forward to the 128GB maximum capacity in a couple of years...
SimbaDogg @ Sep 25th 2008 12:54PM
@ London
seriously...when i got my 8 GB microSD around February, i paid the low price of 80 bucks shipped through amazon (which was like 30 dollars below msrp)...now the 16GB is the same price as the 8 that i paid for...ugh, thats technology for you
Christy McGrory @ Sep 25th 2008 6:27AM
Wow. 2 or 3 years ago a card of that capacity would have cost well over 300 quid.
▀█▀ █ ▀█▀ ▄█▀ @ Sep 25th 2008 6:42AM
moot point since 2 or 3 years ago there was no card of that capacity
dj496 @ Sep 25th 2008 7:03AM
@ TITS: he said "would have".
thedesolate1 @ Sep 25th 2008 9:32AM
I think he means proportionally to the biggest size card at the time.
Ignatius @ Sep 25th 2008 10:38AM
Considering that 8GB USB flash drives cost about $400 apiece about 3 years ago.. I think we've come a long way.
substance90 @ Sep 25th 2008 6:30AM
First good news since the release of this disappointing phone. Now if they magically release a lot faster version, not lagging the Android UI and add some features, like GPS, stereo bluetooth etc, I MIGHT consider it.
Wii60 @ Sep 25th 2008 6:55AM
The G1 DOES have GPS, they just inexplicably left it out of the press conference.
avester @ Sep 25th 2008 7:05AM
Who uses bluetooth for listening to music...
substance90 @ Sep 25th 2008 7:08AM
Are you suggesting using T-mobile`s crappy headphones?!
Wii60 @ Sep 25th 2008 7:18AM
It was a bonehead call by htc to not have a 3.5" jack, but springing for the adapter isn't the end of the world. I wish it has A2DP, but that's the one thing this phone lacks, whereas any other phone I can think of has several shortcomings. At least in the 150-200 range.
Kirk @ Sep 25th 2008 8:34AM
Who uses bluetooth for listening to music...
What???? You must be new to bluetooth stereo.
L.Rawlins @ Sep 25th 2008 9:02AM
'Who uses bluetooth for listening to music?...'
Every other owner of a product not prefixed with an 'i' around these parts mate.
SimbaDogg @ Sep 25th 2008 12:59PM
@ avesstar
i can't believe you're high ranked. iv'e been using bluetooth stereo headsets for my phone for months now. i guess you're not much of an early adapter, maybe it'll get to you in 2-3 years time.
Christian @ Sep 25th 2008 1:40PM
@avester
I use bluetooth headset when listening to music! I even use it to answer calls from my phone! I use a Sony Ericsson phone and a Sony bluetooth headset. Only interuptions I get is if I turn on the wifi function and the bluetooth function at the same time (I assume 2.4Ghz cross interference) but other than that it streams the music very fast and clear.
keithwwalker @ Sep 25th 2008 4:16PM
I have been using A2DP stereo bluetooth for 1-1/2 years, from my phone to my headset, and to my car stereo as well. Sounds like you guys don't have an HTC phone, lolz.
K Nang @ Sep 25th 2008 6:33AM
this + N96 = 32GB in your pocket
eeeeeexcellent
J.L @ Sep 25th 2008 6:36AM
Well dunno what does this news have to do with G1, but great to know that 16GB cards are available for my INNOV8
L.Rawlins @ Sep 25th 2008 6:45AM
Yeah, when I sent the tip I only referenced the arrival of the memory card. Nothing more.
Jash Sayani @ Sep 25th 2008 6:53AM
I hate the HTC G1. Google could have chosen a better phone for Android. Even if the 16Gig card slips into the card slot, it does not mean that ut will work without hanging or without sluggish experience.
Johnny K @ Sep 25th 2008 8:12AM
Do you have any claims to you rants? I have seen nothing that would indicate that the G1 hangs alot or that it's sluggish. Comments like yours just make you seem like a Apple fanboy.
Ricardo @ Sep 25th 2008 6:53AM
Not a bad price, I spent $ 37 a few months ago on my 8gb MicroSD (now it's < $30), which was about the same price per gb.
Paul @ Sep 25th 2008 6:59AM
Yet another iPhone imitation. The original one rules as always.
Wii60 @ Sep 25th 2008 7:51AM
But Apple copied the design from LG....
gnoodles @ Sep 25th 2008 10:22PM
A 16GB MicroSD card is a copy of the iPhone? I mean, yeah, the iPhone is available in a 16GB variant, but there were numerous other things offered in a 16Gig form before the iPhone. I think you need to explain this one to me...
(And for the humor challenged, yes, that was sarcasm.)
MikeN @ Sep 25th 2008 7:00AM
ok off the 16gb MSDHC card for a sec.... is it just me or is that G1 the worst looking device HTC has made.... It looks like the lead designers at HTC took some time off and the back up team created it.
now back to the 16gb MSDHC.. it's mind blowing that you can put 16 gigs into something the size of your nail as for trusted brand I like SanDisk.
Nick @ Sep 25th 2008 7:32AM
It was actually the Ex. CEO of Danger, Inc. who designed the phone, HTC really just manufactured it, and i'm guessing this is why it looks so much like a T-mobile Sidekick with software on steroids.
Wii60 @ Sep 25th 2008 7:57AM
The people who got to actually hold the device said it looks much better in person. I'm a T-Mo guy and I'm anxious to get Andriod, but I think I'll skip the preorder and see one in store first. If that means I have to wait a while so be it. I'd rather not take the chance.
MikeN @ Sep 25th 2008 8:39AM
Thanks Nick and Wii60 good to know some think it looks better in person and that someone else is to blame for the fugly design.
I just wish the first Andriod device would be breath taking.. The G1 does not make me jump out of my seat with the urge to run all over town looking for one.. Like some might have with the iPhone..
mtths @ Sep 25th 2008 7:01AM
"Exactly what you need for your new T-Mobile G1."
duh, please stop drooling on the G1, its only a phone after all

It still boggles my mind that they're able to cram that many gigs (and counting!) of data onto a chip that's approximately...

CRAZY!
blizz419 @ Sep 25th 2008 7:29AM

I think engadget are trying to push the whole G1/Android news to the point of saturation.
It wont be long before everyone starts getting pissed off with too much Android news, at which point they will turn around and say:
"You're always complaining no matter what"
Yes we get it... Android is here.. those of us that like it are excited but is it really necessary to mention it in every post? Even those that have no bearing on it?
thedesolate1 @ Sep 25th 2008 9:42AM
I think the android launch is something major because its represents a big shift to the mainstream for "open" mobile phones. Also consider this that if they didnt have enough coverage they would have people screaming "Why did you make a 100 posts about the iphone launch and just 5 references to android"/exaggeration. This is their attempt at being fare and balanced. Surprisingly enough I think their final impressions were pretty dead on/accurate and not iphone fanboy slander like gizmodo. Basically reflecting what is good and what we can all agree we dont like, aswell as their outlook on the device saying the potential is there.
greygabe @ Sep 25th 2008 7:36AM
Finaaaaaly - IPhone fan boys can shut up about the only thing they had going for them! Storage space!
(yes i kno its pretty and cool - but talking straight features)
Also - can't wait to get a hold of this for my Eee
TareX @ Sep 25th 2008 7:38AM
That's about the first time the white G1 looked good on a promotional photo. Hmmmm (reconsidering)....
