SanDisk's 16GB microSDHC card slips into retail, T-Mobile's G1
Shhh, keep this on the down low: SanDisk's 16GB microSDHC card is now available for purchase -- the first to reach that capacity. At the moment, it's only been spotted at a few on-line shops in the UK for round-about £45 with VAT (about $70 pre-tax in the US). Exactly what you need for your new T-Mobile G1. Hey Sandisk, you want to chime in and make this official or what?

The point was, even the G1 could look good on a promotional photo.
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa! That phone is bent?!

I don't know if anyone notices that it says availability: No. and in the picture it says demo picture not an actual product. It's obviously photoshopped, and looks like they are trying to jump on the pre-sale bandwagon. Reminds me of Gamestop, who would even sell pre-orders for games that never come out.

I thought I read the phone was only expandable to 8Gb. No?
Engadget must be forgetting that the G1 only accepts up to 8GB micro sd cards. I would not want anyone to buy into this for their G1 only to have it not work. It has been said that they will add support in the future with a firmware upgrade. But at launch, there will be no 16GB micro sd support.

It has been said that it does support SDHC
They just meant that 8gb is the largest card available right now. If the phone is SDHC compatible (hint: it is) then it will support a 16gb SDHC card. They would have to go out of their way to artificially cap it at 8gb.
I was looking for one of these the other day and I was surprised that they weren't out yet. Seems that they have been touting them for a while.
I was disappointed cause my buddy just got the 16GB iPhone and I am looking at the Treo Pro. The fact that I couldn't match his capacity was really angering me. Now I feel better.
Just wondering... With MicroSD's size, couldn't they just put 2 slots in phones? (it would be like a D and E drive for your phone)
What the hell is this story about? Those cards have been around for a while now (I was looking at them at mymemory.co.uk at least a month ago) and they are not related to the G1 in any way other.
In other news, scientists have discovered a way to transmit audio and video wirelessly to boxes in people's houses.
If you're refering to the fact that they've been on pre-order since about June then yes they have been around for a while, but they aren't shipping 'officially' until October.
That's what this story is about.
Oh that's weird because we already have them in the UK.
Can you install your apps on the memory card or only on the phone's memory only like a Blackberry phone
Man the G1 is one ugly phone, an the UI look like crap on that phone not pretty at all.

I don't understand why some people say that the UI is ugly or not functional. The home screen is the best that I've seen on any mobile OS, it takes the best features from Desktop and customizes them to be quick and usable on a small touch screen. Everything is there, you can put your custom shortcuts on there (people's phone numbers, music albums, web sites) and leave your less used stuff in the Start Menu (sorry, don't know android's terminology for it yet).
If you don't like the big clock, delete it. Use the space for your most used features. A log of system notifications are always available in the top tray, you've got the long press feature for that much needed right-click menu, you've got the hardware menu button for quick access to an application's toolbar, it's just a really well designed system to give a desktop-like experience on the go.
I love the look and design of this phone. How can anyone honestly look at that picture and say it's "ugly"?? That just boggles my mind. The design may not be to your liking but it is definitely NOT "ugly" by a long shot!
Not a bad phone. It will cater to WinMo users and will take away more market share from MS and its mobile divisions.
It will not make a dent with the iPhone popularity or slow down its huge sales gains. G1 is designed to cater to those WinMo users who like clunky, bulky mechanical type devices.
Seriously, you prove over and over that you haven't the slightest clue of what you're talking about. If it's a phone worth buying, people who prefer BOTH sides will be buying it, not just WinMo users- especially considering WinMo is leaps and bounds past this already. Besides, a higher end HTC is far superior to any iPhone to date.
Oh its ZG. The master jester and master of contradictions.
Yes this will cater to WinMo device users, such as yourself. The G1 is visually bulkier, physically bulkier when handled, much heavier, has a mechanical slider for your old style keyboard. Ugly color. In fact its design hasn't changed in more than 2 years. According to one of the original G1 developers.
So as you can see hardware design of 2 years ago is perfect for you. Without the ability to appreciate excellent industrial design, superb fit and finish, you're the perfect customer for these clunky devices.
Yeah, the iPhone is great for what it costs, but if you are willing to shell out the money for a high end phone, you can get better.
So stop the worship of a phone that is certainly trendy, but lacks the features of a really nice device.
Apparently this reply system doesn't want to work...
"WinMo user such as myself? Since when am I a WinMo user? I have a Samsung A737- not a "smart-phone".
Excellent design and perfect fit and finish much like the 3rd generation iPod Nano and it's tilted screen and horrible "fatty" (much like you) design? LOL! The iPhone has pretty poor design, especially the 3G with it's curved, crack-prone casing.
If I were to get any "smart-phone", it would definitely be the HTC Touch Diamond- with a design that puts the iPhone to shame and an OS that is actually worth a damn, the iPhone doesn't stand a chance in Hell in comparison, and the G1 is a POS that really won't take market from anyone. But again, had it been a decent phone, it would take away market from BOTH companies, not just Microsoft- especially since Microsoft doesn't actually make phones."
Ok, anyway, Janus, the iPhone certainly isn't "great" for the money- what's great for the money is a plain Jane cell phone that does exactly what you need it to do. If you actually *need* a smart-phone, you're not going to go with an iPhone- guaranteed; rather, you would be going with models from higher end companies such as Blackberry, HTC, and so on. The iPhone is for "hip" kids and people who like useless features rather than the necessities that the working class would actually need.
Hot damn, I feel so pathetic. Sitting here with my puny 4GB card.
This is great because I might actually be getting a G1, as much hate as that's gonna spew on me here. You can't deny that the OS is pretty nice, open source means that it's always going to change. Yeah, the phone may not be the prettiest looking one, but it has a ton of features, almost more than the iPhone. And BTW, T-Mobile removed their 1GB cap -> http://androidcommunity.com/t-mobile-1gb-data-cap-canned-tcs-still-being-reviewed-20080924/
But the G1 only suports 8GB of storage
I love how the hater comments are all so low ranked.

I think this phones accepts 8gb max cards
It supports SDHC (microSDHC in this case) therefore theoretically it supports up to 32GB. At the press release, only 8GB microSDHC card is available thus only 8GB was mentioned.
Wowww. Take a photofast card adapter for psp and plug in 8 of these and you pretty much get 128gb of storage for psp! even though you'll be spending upwards of $600 for the whole setup o_o
