T-Mobile G1 manual leaks out
It's going to be a few weeks yet until your unwashed hands are touching an actual G1, so how'd you like some reading material to pass the days in the meantime? T-Mobile has trotted out its first Android phone's user's manual -- probably not on purpose, if we had to guess -- and there are some interesting little morsels in there that'd be even more interesting if you actually had the phone in front of you. For example, did you know the G1 had a status light? Don't see those too often these days. You've also got a full rundown of the notification icons, apps (including the Android flavor of T-Mobile's myFaves app), and -- get this -- procedure for battery removal. Fancy that! ok.. maybe this isnt the best article to ask this question in, but I'm asking it. Forgive me if it's been asked previously. If there is a touchscreen, why is there also a trackball? The only thing I can see is if they expect one to break down on you.. I mean, the track ball on my blackberry pearl no longer works for selecting, only scrolling, so luckily i can use the enter key. is that the theory behind this? Am I missing the idea completely? or does no one know.. it it just feels like a lot of this phone was thrown together in order to say, "it has this, the iPhone/Instinct/Prada/Storm/generic touchscreen phone, does not"
Some people prefer physical feedback for what they do on their phone, and touchscreens don't really give you any. The trackball isn't going to be used much, but it'd be annoying to live without it for things like highlighting/copying text.
The input method could also be more useful in games and other programs than the touchscreen, depending on the nature of the software. "pumpjack" for the sidekick showed how useful a trackball can be.
I want to see what the calendar looks like!
My guess is it would look exactly like this...
