Imation's wireless USB Apollo Pro WX external HDD does backups sans wires
We knew wireless USB would eventually rise up and become more than a pitiful excuse for not plugging in your digicam to transfer photos, and lo and behold, it has done just that. Imation's latest Apollo drive packs a lot of promise, thanks in huge part to the integrated WiQuest WUSB solution tucked within. Put simply, the Apollo Pro WX can begin to backup user data as soon as the machine in question comes "into range." Without any wires (save for that pesky AC adapter), this [Via EverythingUSB]

Umm, for years now you have had the ability to wirelessly transfer data to a NAS device or network enabled external HDD via a WiFi connection.

Can't wait till this is the standard.
Wait what about wireless HDD hacking :O

Do you see Windows mentioned anywhere in that article?
Dbs143 @ Sep 27th 2008 12:03AM

Neeko @ Sep 27th 2008 12:03AM
what speeds are we talking about?
chuck @ Sep 27th 2008 12:41AM
480mbps within 6 feet, speed will start to drop off as you get further away.

At first I was wondering what the point of this product is. What's the big deal about plugging your external drive into your PC? It's not like a media device where you might want the PC in one part of the house at a distance from the TV.
But now I get it. This is a product for notebook users. You bring your laptop back home, plop it down anywhere (in range) and it automatically backs up your data. You don't have to remember to plug in to keep your data safe.
In addition, it frees up the often relatively small data storage of SSD based netbooks.
DrB99 @ Sep 27th 2008 12:15PM
Yeah, I think that's exactly right, you'll be able to just plop your laptop down, hopefully on your wireless charging pad too, and it will just back itself up. More importantly, if you're like me and keep your backup drive in a fireproof safebox in your too prone to burst into flames apartment complex, you're one step closer to being able to do it without ever having to reveal where the safe is hidden or mess with opening it. As the article says, all you lack is that pesky AC adapter. Come long life battery powered solid state drive, come.

chances are, if it's in a fireproof box, the box will be thick enough to block the wireless signal from escaping....
