Crapgadget: this BlackBerry Bold dock is just for effect
Let's be straight: nothing says "I'm a successful businessperson" quite like a dock for your smartphone. You know, smack in the middle of that solid oak desk of yours -- the one in the corner office. What, you say your fancy new BlackBerry Bold doesn't have connections for a proper dock? Well, hell, you've got hair plugs, spray-on tan, and a house in the Hamptons you can't afford, so why not take the charade to the next level? USB Fever's fabulously generic $20 cradle for the Bold will at least charge the thing, but if you want to get all crazy and sync up with your PC, you've got to suffer the indignance of a USB cable (coiled for your convenience) flopping off the side. Should look real professional next to the red Swingline and that stupid "Teamwork" perpetual motion rowing thing of yours, sport. You know what we're talking about.

Just answer me this lee s,
Why must you idiots have this obsession with having to be first and telling everybody, does it make you all tingly inside or something? Am I the only one that doesn't understand why these foolish tro11s constantly bombard the internet with "first"!?!?!?
lee s @ Sep 30th 2008 5:45AM

OK, that Teamwork perpetual motion rowing thingy looks seriously cool.
SimbaDogg @ Sep 30th 2008 5:09PM
i've never seen that perpetual rowing one before, its ok...but i must say i like the official posters better. Teamwork, determination, adversity...all goodies and classically lame. Swingline is just classic
Jamie M @ Sep 30th 2008 5:14AM
I thought blackberries were suppposed to get their sync on over the airwaves?
daddycool @ Sep 30th 2008 5:20AM
If it charges the device that's all that it needs to do. It works perfectly. You don't need to sync Blackberries anymore. The BES server or Mobile Carrier servers handle all of that wirelessly.
This dock will actually be very useful for most Blackberry users. Maybe you shouldn't do the Blackberry posts if you're not clear on how they work.
artie Lange @ Sep 30th 2008 5:37AM
Wow, is the author ever bitter and envious. Did an i-banker steal your girlfriend or something?
Hashbrown Hunter @ Sep 30th 2008 7:51AM
...or maybe the dude who designed the dock? Everybody knows designers are sexy,
Dwelling @ Sep 30th 2008 5:45AM
You can really feel the envy in the post, some banker hurt him bad in the past...
Jash Sayani @ Sep 30th 2008 5:53AM
Not again.... All I see on the internet these days is- New Phone, New dock for it, Another dock, And one more dock........ And a new phone again............
Give me a break !
Jamie M @ Sep 30th 2008 6:28AM
Ok, but this is engadget. What were you expecting?
rajcellv @ Sep 30th 2008 5:56AM
I don't really think this blackberry cradle is as crappy as the author thinks. Maybe the 'crapgadget' title could be reserved for Apple's next release?
Joseph @ Sep 30th 2008 6:27AM
He thinks it's crappy because it's basically a Blackberry Bold stand with a mini-USB to USB cable built-in. It's not the greatest product, but at least Blackberry uses an INDUSTRY STANDARD PORT. Like one I can go to Walmart and buy a cable for. This minor annoyance is worth that major benefit.
joshsisk @ Oct 1st 2008 10:58AM
That is _kind of_ a bad example, because you can buy the cord for almost any phone at Walmart.
That said, I wish all phones (and music devices) would just use mini-USB.
Jakob @ Sep 30th 2008 6:31AM
At least you are able to afford this while the finance crisis is eating more banks.
David @ Sep 30th 2008 6:56AM
Absolute CRAP...
Why follow others?(idock)
BB is self innovative.
should be uniquely innovative like "blackberry" itself. I Expect !!!
Never follow oters invention...
melloncollie @ Sep 30th 2008 8:57AM
You realize that BlackBerry (or RIM) didn't design this or put it out to market.
It's a third-party accessory.
Rex @ Sep 30th 2008 9:55AM
You do realize that Apple didn't invent the dock? My PPC-6700 came with a dock before there were even rumors of the iPhone, not to mention all the other PPCs and phones that came before mine.
dvsbstrd @ Sep 30th 2008 7:13AM
But I love my red swingline.
That stapler has never jammed up on me once.
Damn fine stapler.
Ford Mustang @ Sep 30th 2008 8:12AM
The author sounds like he is very jealous.
Jeff @ Sep 30th 2008 8:33AM
am I the only one who remembers a thing called bluetooth?
Joseph @ Sep 30th 2008 9:29AM
You can't charge via bluetooth. At least not that I know of.
Dennis @ Sep 30th 2008 8:51AM
doesn't it have bluetooth?
Erik Tomlinson @ Sep 30th 2008 10:56AM
For security reasons, BlackBerries cannot sync over bluetooth.
Also, the USB port is the only place it can charge anyway. I have a Bold and there's nothing on the bottom that could charge it.
Jason @ Sep 30th 2008 9:53PM
Look in the bottom of the bold... on either side of the plastic chrome there is a metal contact for a proper dock... I just need RIM to release one....
HDGMansur Capitalgroup @ Sep 30th 2008 9:06AM
who says it has to be on the desk?
Matthew @ Sep 30th 2008 9:33AM
yup, i was about to say
syncing with bluetooth is much better, and keeps the desktop clearer too
colinpeddle @ Sep 30th 2008 10:41AM
best written engadget story in a while, good job chris.
Demodave @ Sep 30th 2008 1:34PM
And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were married, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire...
Rom @ Sep 30th 2008 1:55PM
Booooooooo I want STORM
Herbie555 @ Sep 30th 2008 4:25PM
My Perl syncs over Bluetooth just fine. Fire up my PC in the morning and it syncs straight away. Walk away from my desk and come back and it asks if it should sync again. The only thing that doesn't work over Bluetooth is the Roxio media manager, so if I want to move mp3s or photos to/from I have to plug in USB or yank the u-SD card.
Of course, the Perl also has the bottom power contacts so I use a stand similar to the above for desktop charging.

How about this one that slides in from the side:
