While JVC Victor hasn't promised us a review unit just yet (cmon, we're still begging here), we did get a chance to get up close with its
SDHC concept camcorder today at CEATEC. Designed for the more sophisticated user (as opposed to family users, they tell us), the camera will shoot both high-quality HD video and stills, something they say has yet to be done in a device. The upcoming Everio is slated for release in the first half of 2009 at an undisclosed price, but JVC promises the unit is, indeed, coming. In the meantime, we'll have to make do with these new shots in the gallery below.

Kinda retro. Which can be either good or bad, depending on your tastes.

"the camera will shoot both high-quality HD video and stills, something they say has yet to be done in a device."
They must've missed the memo on the 5D Mark II, and the D90 before that. Oh yeah, and all those other camcorders out there that double as still cameras, which have been coming out since... oh, forever.

I don't know a huge deal about cameras but your comment seems pretty hasty. I'm guessing the difference between this camcorder and those models you mention is that this is primarily a camcorder and those are primarily DSLRs. If somebody is serious about making videos they're probably not going to buy the D90 because the fact that you can record videos is a secondary function.
And I'm pretty sure handheld cameras haven't been recording full HD quality since forever...
LloydChiro @ Oct 1st 2008 9:33AM
Someone serious about making videos isn't going to buy this one either.
Actually, I think a serious videographer would more likely buy a big-chip camera with interchangeable lenses (like the upcoming micro-4/3 cameras) than a consumer cam with a tiny chip.

Never mind the retro box, what's that sexy upright design in the background of the side-on shot ? Looks like a HD-memory stick version of my dear old DVP7, which still works.....will it be better than the Sony TG1 ?
blewyn @ Oct 1st 2008 3:17AM
Let me put that another way....see that upright design in the background ? If it's gonna shoot Full HD at 60p recording onto a tiny HDD or very large memory stick in MP4 (or AVCHD if you really must) then me wants it
oh and have 10x optical zoom minimum :-)

60p? No, get serious. You'll be lucky to get 24p and 30p.
Information Central @ Oct 1st 2008 6:52AM
If it shoots only interlaced, FORGET IT.
Nobody should be shooting interlaced video in 2008.
LloydChiro @ Oct 1st 2008 9:38AM
What is it about this camera that appeals to a more sophisticated user? No accessory shoe. No manual controls. No microphone input? I bet you're lucky to have a tripod mount.
dcoaster @ Oct 1st 2008 4:18PM
pretty ugly looking..
