Nintendo prepping "Wii HD" for 2011?
Look, we're talking three years from now, anything could happen by then. Singularity, jetpacks, you name it. So a teensy bit of HD graphics from Nintendo doesn't seem like too much to ask, does it? The filthy-rich company is purportedly showing off just such a Wii-followup to developers and publishers in the industry, who are nicknaming it "Wii HD" for the time being. A true sequel to the Wii, the followup will apparently stick with the core competencies (motion controls), while beefing up visuals (yes, please!), digital distribution, local storage and including backwards compatibility. The only hard evidence cited by What They Play, which originated the rumor, is that Nintendo's R&D spending has grown dramatically since the launch of the Wii. We're sure that cash is also being poured into the new DS and a number of other projects, but it's really not much of a stretch to figure Nintendo's working on a Wii successor two years into the Wii's highly-successful life cycle. All we've got to say is that a few of these improvements really shouldn't wait until 2011, and still others are long overdue.

Just because they have sold alot doesn't mean that it's good. It's not anything close to breakthrough, it's not immersive at all and feels exactly like duck shoot crossed with an iphone game, with graphics less satisfying than both. Sick of all this wii hype, it sucks balls, and the games that run on it suck balls. Unless the Wii HD hooks into me and i enter it like the matrix, it won't impress me, and i definitely won't be impressed by waving my arms around controlling another mario game.
I know it's easier for older/younger people. But that doesn't make it not boring after an hour of game time.
IT'S. NOT. INNOVATIVE.
What's more impressive, looking at a 3d character on screen and have the game convince you it's real, or controlling a stickman on screen in weird and wonderful ways with your arms.
Yeah, you see I have this real gaming device called a PC, that I custom built to play games like Crysis, Medieval Total War II and World in Conflict at high settings. That's where I play my "3d characters that convince me their real." It looks better than anything PS3 currently has available.
Considering that I already have that kind of gaming device, I also purchased a Wii, because it is different, entertaining and has games that will never even be available on the PC. I have a lot of fun with Wii, even though I am also a hardcore PC gamer. It is the only console that offers me a different experience than what I can get on my PC, the only one. The rest of the consoles have the same games I can get on my PC except with the poor controls that come with a console and lesser graphical abilities.
It has nothing to do with easy or being younger/older, I'm 26, it's the only "different" experience in existence outside of my PC and some of the games, like Super Mario Galaxy, are innovative and take approaches that I have not seen before.
I play games to have fun, not to be impressed by beautiful graphics, although it's nice when I can have both.
"What's more impressive, looking at a 3d character on screen and have the game convince you it's real, or controlling a stickman on screen in weird and wonderful ways with your arms."
Do we even have to dignify that question with an answer? The stickman every time. Unless Virtual Reality is about to make a comeback, sitting on the sofa looking at a rendered 3D landscape is never going to convince you that it is real (either that or you have more pressing issues). The Wii is definitely much more immersive but I do have to add the caveat that how well it works depends on the game. I don't think anyone can argue that Tiger Woods, for example, isn't much more immersive on the Wii than any other platform. The problem that the Wii has is not the graphics but rather finding games that work well with the new controls rather than trying to port games that were designed for a total different means of control.
There is more than Mario on the Wii, and there is more to motion controls than "waving your arms around". Perhaps you should actually give the third party games the console has a chance instead of writing them off and bashing the console.
Are they going to cal the Wii successor the Wang?
So you'd rather play a beautifully rendered game with crap gameplay over a average looking game with amazing playability?
Thank god there aren't more of you pixel pushers around, otherwise classics like Tetris wouldn't be around anymore today.
I'll take stickman for $400, Alex.
Suck it, Trebek.
There is no shortage of mediocre gameplay on the Wii. Just look at the third party lineup.
Wow, thats it? A Wii with HD graphics? Xbox and PS will both have killer machines out at least by 2010, way to go nintendo, way to go.
What's the HD stand for? Wii Haz Dallarz?
It's good to konw they are planning something in HD, cus I am seriously thinking of not picking their next console... and I was a long time fan since 8bit era.
please don't hate me for mentioning apple in a nintendo post, but i'm curious if apple's new push for gaming, and nintendo's adoption of aac for the wii will lead to some sort of partnership?
i love both companies so i'd love to see what they could do together. anyone think that's plausible?
Apple is the only other Big company I see that is not in the market Minus iPhone and iTouch. I have the touch if those two got together. Look out world. say bye bye to XBox and PS1,2,3,4.
Wait, the hard evidence is spending on R&D since the Wii launch?
They've said plenty of times they always begin work on the next console straight after a launch and given the success of the Wii, they have more money to put into R&D.
I'm all for calling it "Wii HD," provided the "HD" stands for both "high definition" and "hard drive."
Pick one.
The Wii looks fun, but until it is HD, I am not interested. Hopefully this will happen sooner rather than later.
I think this is great news. Personally I have no interest in the Wii because the graphics are such crap. That's just way I am and i'm sure I'm not alone. If it could equal the other systems I would buy it for sure. Nintendo has always had the best games.
Wii Too
Get it? its like "we too" or "wii 2"
It works on many levels.
What yall think?
If they're making it HD, i hope they're spending all that money on making it full 1080p HD. They can call it WiiP, which will hopefully end all the urine jokes.
.....So it's a Wii that I can upscale GameCube games on? Excellent. No, I love my Wii, but I'll want a little more than "More Waggle+
More Polygons" in 2 years.
Common engadget, i send you this link one year ago......

A graphical improvement would obviously be appreciated in the new console http://www.cheapbuys4u.com and http://www.besthdtv4u.com
Wii is a different gamers market. What 5yr is going to play Call of Duty or Halo? Nintendo has ALWAYS been interactive. Tack and Field, Duck Hunt. Now that was ahead of its time. Nintendo is Fully interactive. PS3 Not.
Nintendo will always go after the other market. As far as HD only good if you have 1080p So.....Also to stay fully backwards compatible then they need to stay with their internal customers. =] To all a good day and see you in 2011. =D
Wii HD. Wow. This might be the biggest thing to ever happen. Now I' v should have waited to buy this one instead of the other, which reminds me...... I need to tell the other ACMs
