Philips reveals 56-inch Quad Full 3D HDTV in Hollywood
On the slim chance that a 52-inch, no-glasses-needed 3D HDTV wasn't swank enough for you, Philips is one-upping itself at the Biz-Ex conference in Hollywood. This 56-inch monstrosity is hailed as a Quad Full Autostereoscopic 3D HDTV, which means that it packs a slightly absurd (in a good way, of course) 3,840 x 2,160 resolution and can churn through data at an alarming rate. Additionally, Philips is promising that this one can produce up to 46 views at once, which should go a long way in making the third-dimension a lot more believable on TV. There's no definitive release date just yet, but it'll probably run upwards of $25,000 whenever it's ready for prime time.

Screw real life, I have money!
But do you have a video source that's capable of feeding video to this TV?
Can you imagine the bandwidth required? I mean... it's crazy... 46 views X high-enough-bitrate-for-2160p x 24fps... MY MINDS ABOUT TO EXPLODE.
I know the image should look 3D... but it just looks like a cheesy photoshop.
That being said, I want this. :-)
You do realize that a mockup of a photo of a 3D television is not going to actually be in 3D, right?
I don't understand what you were expecting to see.
LLOL (Literally Laughed Out Loud)
I don't know if you are both idiots but you do realize that you are reading engadget on a 2D monitor? So even if they took a photo it would still look 2D. It has nothing to do with mockups.
Thanks for pointing out engadget is 2D.
Seriously, go to the site. The photos there look 3D (blue/red images). This is a random image of some guy holding a mixer in front of a camera, that looks like it is trying to represent 3D. I just thought it did a bad job of representing 3D. Sorry for having an opinion, back in line...
I dunno... that picture looks pretty 2d to me. :P
How does this work? Some kind of everything s focused in the picture? Or we have to move around to see the diferent prespectives?
I'll take two....
... one for each eye.
Not saying that I don't want this...but how much Quad Full Autostereoscopic 3D HDTV content is out there?
Depends on what kind of content you can get a hold of, if you have access to digital cinema media drives and a computer to play them, quite a bit, if not none at all. Quad HD will use a form of full compressed 2k and compressed 4k for its content, these are the shooting standards for most movies now days and are what digital cinemas receive their movies in.
Jean-Michel Jarre may not make the best music, but man, his creativity and performances (La Defense concert in the early 90's that drew 2.5 MILLION people) are second to none. I love grooving out to Rendez-Voux IV and Calypso especially.
I was talking about the guy in the picture, if you were confused.

Yeah. JMJ. It definitely does me good to see a Memorymoog, Synthi, and ARP 2500 somewhere in an Engadget post...
Yours truly,
A complete synth nerd.
So what's he doing in this picture?
Ok, since Jan of this year these things projected price have dropped another $15k, if that trend keeps up we might see one hit the shelves by the end of the decade and actually be affordable in the early part of the next.
If that trend keeps up THEY'LL be paying ME.
pr()n!
As sweet as a set of spectacular breasts in 3D would be, I don't think the trade off of having some movie meat stick swinging around in my living is acceptable. Unless it's mine.
the image on the screen is from JMJ's Oxygene's live performance, shot in 3D and is available in DVD format. you need the typical red/blue glasses, but it does look really good.

So will I be able to order beer from it and have it served to me? If so, I'll take one for each of my 1 rooms :)
too bad it's Philips and they can pretty much only do a good job at making lightbulbs
Are you serious? Do you KNOW the things Philips has accomplished?

Just kidding you, I am from the Netherlands myself ;).
If next gen gaming consoles supported Quad Full 3D HDTV then I wouldn't mind spending my life savings on one of these.
Damn.....left the ROOM out of "living ROOM"!
It's things like this that make me happy I'm poor. That way, if I ever get any money, I'll be cool with just buying this TV and being poor again. Forever, cuz i wouldn't leave the living room.
I'll just save tens of thousands of dollars and get myself a T221.
