Sling Media's Clip+Sling strides into beta, release looks imminent
Sling Media has a history of not disappointing, and while we were admittedly bummed to see Clip+Sling omitted from SlingPlayer 2.0, it looks like that one gripe is about to be remedied. If you'll recall, said feature was originally announced way back at the front end of 2007, and now select users are receiving e-mails announcing the launch of a private beta program. The Sling.com portal promises to "give users access to a premier library of content from top TV networks, movie studios, sports leagues and websites," and reportedly, it'll let folks "grab snippets of television content, upload them to the Sling site and create playlists and feeds that can be viewed and subscribed to by others." Is that YouTube / Hulu / Joost / et al. quaking in their boots, or are we just happy it's Friday?
Update: Sling pinged us to say that the actual Clip+Sling functionality was still in progress and wouldn't be a part of the initial Sling.com portal. It's still in the works, though -- shame it won't happen sooner, though.

That's nice, but not nearly as useful as a Sling Player for iPhone/iTouch.
great, great, where is the BB Slingplayer client????
SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry will be in beta before the year is out, fairly soon actually.
That would be great to have, if I could get a slingbox that wouldn't die the most obscure deaths. I'n now waiting for my 3rd Pro in less than 1.5 years to arrive in the mail. Definitely looking forward to this feature though.
Seriously though, where are the SlingPlayer's for BlackBerry and iPhone?
That is an app that would make me break down and get a new phone.
Agreed. An iPhone or BB client would likely make me break down and get a new phone and a new Sling box! Features like Clip+Sling are starting to help with the Sling justification though...
SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry will be in beta before the year is out. iPhone is the next platform after BB.
Bet the Job-O the Hut syndicate is giving Sling the “gas face”!
We know it’s at least beta by now:

So why no app store release? Because it will compete with future Apple TV/iPhone plans.
PS An android’s symbian looking out of a window is googles more fun than being a veal in a shiny box. Just sayin...
I know it is a popular rumor, but Apple is not preventing the SPM for iPhone release. It is in development, we (Sling) are in the Apple iPhone Dev program, and that's all we're really saying. It is possible Apple may not allow it in the App store, but it hasn't reached that point yet so we'll just have to see when we get there.
Looks very nice, however perhaps they should be thinking of releasing Slingplayer 2.0 outside of the US before they do this!
Releasing SlingPlayer for Windows 2.0 in additional countries is an ongoing effort which will continue for a while. Sling.com is happening in parallel and is not really directly connected. And, due to the content partnerships, Sling.com is initial geo-limited so most of the world won't be able to use it (sorry, that's the world of content rights) right away. We're also working on agreements to expand that access as well.
The sad thing is that the slingplayer for iphone was shown off in prototype form months ago and we still haven't heard a peep since then on it.

What was shown was a *technology demo*, not even a prototype, and it ran on a jailbroken iPhone. The actual production client is all-new and in engineering now, the demo was just a proof of concept to show that a) SPM could work on an iPhone and b) to try some of the concepts for the iPhone player. The actual production version is being created using the official SDK and engineering is working on it now.
The SlingCatcher was announced at CES 2007 with the plan to ship later that year, it was then delayed by a number of factors, including Sling being purchased that year by EchoStar. It was then re-launched at CES 2008 and it is up for pre-order now on an number of sites, shipping VERY soon.
Something is up with commenting - I left replies to other comments and saw them, now they're not showing up...
To clarify, Clip+Sling is not part of the beta at this time, and Clip+Sling is really a client feature to be added to SlingPlayer. Sling.com will just be the repository where the clips reside, the clip creation will be done in SlingPlayer. The Sling.com beta is currently focused on the web-based SlingPlayer and the content from our partners.
MegaZone quit wasting all this time posting in these threads and get SlingPlayer out for the iPhone already, ill tell you what if somehow it is released prior to the end of the year I will buy another slingbox (pro-hd sounds good) and two sling catchers to go along with my Solo. I mean what the hell is the hold up before it was you wanted to play by apples rules and wait to be accepted now you are but BB is first, give us a break and get it out. You have the SDK you had a concept for "technology demo" ( like anyone doubted it could be done) lol and now your on engadget wasting time replying to useless comments like mine. Shut up and get it done, and when you have a news release Do it on Your site where people can find it.
