Sony's Vaio TT gets dissected, found to contain small components

Of course it had to happen sooner or later, but we're a little taken aback that someone at Sony had the temerity to slice open a newborn Vaio TT and put it on display -- in a booth at CEATEC, no less -- for the whole world to see. Righteous indignation aside, the thing is pretty impressive, especially considering that without the Blu-ray drive it would only be about half the size. We have one more pic for you after the break, and be sure to check out our look inside the Z series while you're at it.

That Blu-ray drive really is a waste of space. Who wants one anyway?
Chin-Poh @ Oct 3rd 2008 2:33AM
The computer has HDMI out for viewing the movies in full 1080P resolution. The screen itself is about 720P resolution, you couldn't view the full detail offered by the Blu-Ray movie, but it'd still be better quality than of a DVD movie.
I also think the drive can burn the discs so a great way to back-up lots of data on a disc. I will wait until its cheaper though, I can't afford it. : )

me.

Half the size? I don't suppose the screen has anything to do with it's current size?
But impressive miniaturization, none the less.

Some of you can hate Sony all you like, but you have to admit they can make some really cool stuff. I own the TZ series but if I were to buy a Vaio again, I'd get the Z instead of the TZ's replacement the TT. Its only slightly bigger but offers much more power and value to me.
I haven't heard of battery life figures from the TT though.

Heyya fellow TZ-Series owner :) I've owned mine for months, and its the best peice of electronic equipment I have ever owned. The thing is just pure beauty and does exactly what I want, a very ultra portable laptop. If I need something powerful so I can game, I'd get a PC.
I get compliments all the time about my laptop, Sony did it right... I paid about $3,000 for it, but I'm not complainig at all :)

Yea that BD drive takes up a lot of space and how often do you actually use BD/DVD/CD while mobile? I always leave my USB DVD at home and have never regretted not bringing it.
Extended battery compartment would have been a better use of the space IMO.

But no, when you leave something out the whingers come along and scream. Case in point. The Macbook Air. Manufactures can never win in the eyes of consumers.
linuxamp @ Oct 3rd 2008 3:03AM
The macbook air is not a good "case in point". They didn't leave "something" out they left out a lot. Like I said, I don't even recall ever needing my optical drive when using my notebook outside my home but I often use more than 1 USB port at a time as well as the Ethernet port. I have also gone through 2 batteries (old age) and typically drain a single battery during long flights. These are not things I'm willing to give up and would prefer if it all fit in the device as opposed external accessories. Since I (and others that I know) rarely use optical, we don't care if that's external

Sony will usually have multiple configurations ready. The TZ was configurable with a 250gb 2.5" HDD or a DVD drive. Further more you could buy parts for extra usb ports instead if you think the 2nd HDD or DVD drive isn't your thing. I highly doubt Sony will only sell one configuration of the TT serie. So the complaining can now stop.
Poom @ Oct 3rd 2008 3:25AM
If Sony was to make something like the MacBook Air... OMG... I'm sure it'd be more powerful for the same size or even smaller size.
Chipp @ Oct 3rd 2008 9:38PM
We have an Apple store right next to a Sony store. While the MacBook Air is thin, the Z seems smaller-- and is definitely MUCH lighter. The Air feels very heavy. I suppose small is in the 'hand of the (be)holder."
Saad @ Oct 4th 2008 2:00AM
lol, small components.
Dan Fruzzetti @ Oct 3rd 2008 11:18AM
It looks a lot like my Toshiba R500 inside, only I understand it weighs quite a bit more :P
Small components, you say? Like "Presents a choking hazard to children under three years?" Or like "The little part that suffocates when the sharp part which gets hurt is swallowed is contained generously" small? Ahhh, Japan...

I've just been to Bic Camera here in Shinjuku, Japan to take a look at this new TT.
Thing looks fantastic, very similar to the TZ, but a treat nonetheless.
I'm looking to get one of these customised by Sony, you can replace the optical drive and a second hard drive. I'm going to go with a 128 GB SSD for the main HDD, then use the optical drive space for a 320GB 7400 RPM drive.
So, for those who are concerned about the uselessness of a Blu-ray drive (I agree), you have some good options.
