Not even a fortnight after HTC's Touch HD
went official in Germany, out pops a review from Deutschland calling it the best thing since sliced bread. Okay, so maybe our translation skills are a bit off, but one thing's for sure -- it was hailed as the first "iPhone killer to deserve that name." Right off the bat, reviewers praised the TouchFLO 3D interface for masking Windows Mobile, and of course, the expansive display was drooled upon numerous times. Additionally, critics praised the Opera browser while scolding Internet Explorer, and while it's hard to say for certain whether the battery life was remarkable, it definitely seemed to get their vote of approval. Of note, the 3.5-millimeter headphone jack was also loved, making us weep while thinking of what
could have been with the T-Mobile G1. At any rate, it seems pretty clear that the Touch HD is going to rock some socks off, but we're trying to push it out of our minds until it becomes available on
this side of the drink. Too bad that approach isn't working at all.

Yeah... "What could have been with the T-Mobile G1"... did anyone really expect Google to put out something that looked good? Really... the big deal with the Touch HD is all looks and glamore... when was the last time Google had anything to do with looks or glamore?
since when did google design the G1? except android i dont think they were involved into the designing part of the G1. and btw, the UI of android looks pretty good. and remember, its their first OS and still in a early stage.
The G1 and Touch HD are made by the same hardware company...
Google is officially synonymous with beta. I'm glad they're competing because competition makes everything better, but I'm not interested in paying to test their wares.
Just because the G1 and Touch HD are both manufactured by the same company does not mean they were both designed by the same company. HTC probably had very little to do with the design of the G1.
@Nate: Using anything is testing it... you are bound to run into a bug and when you do, you call customer support for a solution. Then they say, "we're looking into it" which when translated says "thanks for finding the bug, we'll fix it". Google is probably the only company that states that their products are still beta after public release.
@Paris: HTC was in charge of the hardware, and Google for the software. I don't think Google will linger too much on the hardware, that's for the specialists: the phone manufacturers. We'll see some better designs soon enough as Motorola, Samsung, LG etc come out with their phones.
Why are these companies ripping off apple? Apple invented telephones. They need to sue all telephone manufacturers.
Apple also invented communication between humans. You guys are all ripping off Apple when you communicate with your mouth with the people around you. JUST STOP IT NOW.
:)
:(
iPhone Mörder? Not likely.
What's that? The iPhone lives? Better than ever you say?
Go Low R@nk yourselves.
I find it entertaining how many iPhone killers are announced every week. Anyone else notice that they all take their layout and concept from the iPhone. Is that really a killer or is it just an attempt to catch up?
"I find it entertaining how many Prada killers are announced every week. Anyone else notice that they all take their layout and concept from the Prada. Is that really a killer or is it just an attempt to catch up?"
There. iPhone is all about the UI, not the form.
this one is actually a killer
assassin touch FTW
Why would other companies be copying the Prada if it only has 1 million sales .. and the iPhone which was released a couple of weeks later has sold 10 million ?
Windows Mobile touch screen phones. The LG Prada.
The iPhone did not invent "have a screen" layout.
I find it entertaining how people think that everything's copied off the iPhone. I myself am an iPhone user but I can at least realize that not everything with a touch screen copies the iPhone. I owned several Dopod/HTC phones and it's obvious that Touch HD is an evolution of their previous HTC Touch which was itself built upon their old Dopod PDA Phones (imagine that! a touchscreen phone which came out long before the iPhone was ever announced!! =/)
The iPhone was demoed and announced long before the Prada for starters. But that wasn't the point. The point is that the approach and layout has now been applied to all the "iPhone killlers". The iPhone is the standard for quality and UI design whether you like it or not. It's the one that people find easy to use and buy more of than any other phone model. The simple 4-5 buttons at the bottom of the screen, the bigger and more intuitive layout and buttons, the chrome around the screen is now common also, and yes, the design that the Prada copied 4 months after the iPhone was demoed.
The point is that when the iPhone took these design elements and made the new standard in smart phones, those same elements are now part of every iPhone killer.
Jax2000, talk about revisionist history. The LG Prada was shown off in public in September 2006 4 months before the iPhone was even announced in January 2007 and won a design award.
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/cellphones/lg-says-apple-copied-the-prada-phone-also-apples-mother-is-obese-235933.php
Talking about iPhone killer, the HTC Touch Diamond is outselling the iPhone 3G in the Netherlands.
http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=1225
I think you should apologize for your ignorance.
because hes talking about the layout and not the OS your moron :D
you* and that was @ nathan.
JAx2000, what the hell are you smoking? As correctly stated, the Prada was demoed 4 months before Apple announced and demoed the iPhone. BTW, there were touch screen phones before the Prada. BTW, there were touchscreen devices before that. BTW, Apple did not invent the microchip, although I'm sure people like you would argue different.
It's okay to say Apple has a good product if you feel that way. It really shows ignorance when you start spouting half-truths and blatant lies as facts.
Bottom line is, nothing with the current Windows Mobile UI is going to be an iPhone killer. Go ahead and moderate me down; some of you may not like that fact but it is true.
While Windows Mobile itself has lots of great functionality, The UI needs to come out of the late '90s era and into the modern era.
@surur
on the other hand...apple sold 1mio units of the iphone 3g in 3 days while it took htc 6 weeks to ship (!) 1 mio even though the HTC TD has been released one month before apple released the 3g version.

http://www.digitimes.com/telecom/a20080805PD206.html
Personally I never saw any detail about how the Prada worked until it came out. Still I have trouble finding the UI explained. But you're missing the point totally.
If the Prada was so well designed, why isn't everyone trying to come up with the next Prada Killer? They're not, because it's a niche product and might as well have a bunch of crystals super-glued to it.
I know your answer to why no one wants to invent a Prada Killer will be something about how the iPhone is only about hype etc, but that's just because you're ignorant about why people are buying it. Have you missed the fact that all the "iPhone killers" look like the iPhone and emulate the iPhone? Many right down to the chrome edge around the phone, which I think is silly.
Back to my original point of the 4-5 buttons at the bottom of the screen for example, the Prada does not have this feature, it has a fancy catwalk name and a not so brilliant UI, and is not even showed turned on on their website.
Go to the Prada website and you will notice a bunch of models holding one that is turned OFF. That doesn't say much for it's UI, does it? Not exactly a way to push the ease of use.
JAx2000, your rambling has become more than senseless. Take your loss like a (wo)man and move on.
iphone haven't reached 10 million sales, not even close , pls dont post things that u dont know
actually its only people who knows nothing about phones are shouting that others are copying iphone.
i think all are making just phones , no one is trying to killing someone
Jax, haven't you heard that chrome trim is so outdated. I did not see the HTC Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, Touch HD, Blackberry Storm, Samsung Instinct, Lg Voyager featuring that 50's look.
I dont even know where you are going with the button thing, so I will leave you be. I will only mention that the Touch HD's UI is much more dazzling and impressive than the iPhone's. You just have to look at the weather, e-mail or photo tab for example.
@ Jonathan Bryce
No, but they made it easy to use.
umm my utstarcom ppc 6600 came out in 2004 and has a touchscreen running winmobile.. i've also been using it to watch fullscreen landscape format movies... this guy isn't trying to say the iphone invented touchscreens is he?
You guys are all over the place. Missing the point completely. Apple didn't invent the touchscreen, of course it didn't. It just made smart phones easy to use. That's the point here. every new phone dubbed the iPhone Killer is trying to keep up. They do echo a lot of what Apple did with the iPhone. I too think the chrome trim isn't worth discussing, but you miss that even Blackberry has since the iPhone came out, attempted to echo that look.
Don't confuse my comments on the Prada (which were in response to some Prada Zoolander fanboy posting) with my comments on the HTC.
I highly recommend taking a look at http://www.pradaphonebylg.com/ to see how LG is advertising their phone. The hardly ever show it turned on. Only turned OFF with some Zoolander Models making love to it. If you really think the Prada has a great UI that Apple copied, then please explain why they don't show it off.
The point I was making with the HTC is that yet another phone dubbed the iPhone Killer (hence being compared to an industry standard, no matter what your view is) is in fact now using the simple to use 4-5 buttons at the bottom of the touch screen. Something that Apple has made a standard, whether or not someone else "invented it". This was not a feature of WinMo until more recently, and don't confuse all stylus or hardware button labels with what I'm talking about. It's the TREND that we're talking about. Not who was first. Being first doesn't mean you made something people will use.
I never claimed that Apple invented anything. Just pointing out that Apple created a standard in the iPhone design that all the subsequent "iPhone Killers" are in fact echoing. If you can't tell what I'm talking about, then don't reply to the post, because you're missing the idea.
Now go off and drool over every new iPhone Killer that comes out daily, while I move on with my life using intelligently designed technology for it's intended purpose. :-)

Why did whatever you posted come up as a Mahjong tile on my screen? O.o
It's the Japanese character "tsu," which looks like a smiley face. Incase you can't see it.
WinMo, in any form, won't kill the iPhone. The only reason the iPhone is popular is because A) the interface is well done, B) the hardware is well done, and C) it delivers on what it promises. It doesn't give you the same old WinMo/Verizon/Sprint experience.
For cell phone makers -- is it that hard to understand the principles that make the iPhone successful?
Holly molly!You 4Re Awsome Dude!
I had a Sprint Mogul for over a year and recent got an iPhone 3G... Let me first say that the iPhone interface is awesome... BUT... there are several things that I miss about the WinMo phone... here is just a short list:
1.) No Copy and Paste... yes... this is a big deal... its a PAIN IN THE ASS to take an address from an email or website and put it into google maps to get directions... just for that reason alone copy paste would be GREAT.
2.) No REAL Teathering... another big deal... I used it all the time with the mogul...
3.) No FLASH!!! This is a huge deal... I can't tell you how many times I have wanted to listen to a football game on my phone... can't do it with any web based streaming app cause they all use flash... I have NFL Field Pass but that doesn't work on the iphone... shoot just have the NFL website fully work would be great... I could deal with watching the game on the phone just like I do on the website... but again... no flash... no game!
4.) Lack of buttons is starting to be a big deal... Some of the games are cool but without ANY hardware buttons it makes playing them kind of boring and redundant... just turning the screen to steer and stuff is getting old...
5.) No way to look at files on the phone... I have to send myself PDF attachments just so I can look at them on my phone... and even then if I want to have it around for a while I have to resend it again unless I want to keep tons of email on my phone.
6.) Speed SUCKS... dont care what anyone says... I never get good speeds... even in 3G coverage... my Mogul with EVDO-Rev A was MUCH faster
7.) GPS but no voice nav...
8.) Apps store is cool but its extremely flooded with crap... crappy games... free versions of pay games, etc... its really un-organized too... really... only a single level of categories... go into games and you just get a list of 1200 games... then sometimes you go into the details of a game and go back one level and it has lost your scroll position and you have to scroll all the way down the list to find where you were again... and sometimes... I am not sure but it seems like the ordering of the list changes from view to view... in general... unless your searching for something with the search feature finding stuff in the app store is a pain in the butt...
9.) I HATE iTunes... its one of the worst media managers ever made!!!!! Also... no subscription service like the Zune that I have... :(
That is just a short list of gripes... it would be easy for a powerful WinMo phone to come along with a good interface like TouchFlo and be a real contender for the iPhone... unless apple starts moving on some things there will be a nice opening here... especially if the Touch HD goes to several carriers...
@Jason
1. I do agree with you on this one
2. It's not Apple that are preventing this - it's AT&T/O2
3. I do not want the processor intensive piece of crap Flash integrating into Safari - what I would prefer is a standalone Flash player similar to the YouTube app that alows you to play Flash but without killing the Web experience on Safari
4. NO NO NO NO - the interface works fine and games such as Real Football demonstrate that onscreen controls can work fine
5. Grab one of the apps from the Appstore that solve this issue - such as Airsharing - superb.
6. Disagree - when in a 3G area the phone is very nippy - problem is that not enough of the UK has decent 3G coverage
7. Will arrive shortly
8. Agree
9. Totally disagree - iTunes is THE best media manager on the market and keeps getting improved and updated - who else does this ? In terms of Zune - that's US only but subscription services make you a dream for the record labels in my opinion.
@Jason
Dont forget WinMo, Symbian and Mobile Linux have Killer apps that iPhone lacks
1 Slingbox BEST Mobile app EVER, stupid apple or att doesnt allow it, whatever the reason maybe is hurting us the consumer.
2 TomTom: yeah its in development but really this long?
3 Internet Sharing not an app as it comes with WinMo but ATT deletes the shortcut, FREE Teathering!!!! SCREW YOU $20 a month teathering charge!
4 A2DP not a app but I hate wires and LOVE bluetooth headphones. But some how I expect the iPhone to have this as soon as its "premium" headphones sales slow down, then Apple will release its "iTooth earphones" or something like that so they can rape the consumers yet again.
if any phone had the above 4 with a good to ok UI I'd switch in a heartbeat.
@ Mitch
iTunes is the only player that gets continuously updated? Don't make me laugh, to make a comment like that you cannot have tried one other media player on the market. Winamp compared to itunes is fast to load, easy to use, gives you tons of information and is very customisable with addons from the community and continuous updates from the developers adding more features. Just taking 1 other example iTunes is horrendous at sorting and changing details of files compared to Mediamonkey.
iTunes is a horrible piece of software (it's bloated, buggy, slow to load, forces you to install Bonjour which can't do anything but gather information about you since iTunes works fine without it), it persists simply because of the integration with the store, which for many people is just another negative point. low bitrate, apple proprietary format, expensive and DRM? Seriously anyone who still uses iTunes over a site like 7 digital (high bitrate mp3's, no DRM and cheaper then itunes) is insane.
by the way, all those waiting for TomTom to become available on iPhone ... it is NOT going to happen, simply because of the way iPhone OS architecture is ... it does not support multitasking .. so you cannot listen to music or answer a call, with TomTom running at the same time, thereby defeating the usability of having tomtom on a phone (iPhone).
And WinMo just multitasks great ... I can run 2 (yes two!! TomTom & GoogleMaps /w gps) GPS enabled apps on it at the same time, while listening to music, and also being able to recieve calls. The UI sucks though.
@Juxtah,
Winamp - can you point me to the link where I can download the version that runs on OS X please ?
Do I need to pay for the 'PRO' version in order to do anything useful once downloaded ?
I bow to your superior knowledge.
@ Mitch
Your answers just keep showing you ignorance of any other media players on the market. No Winamp doesn't run on OSX, but that's isn't the question you asked is it? I'm assuming you ignored Media Monkey as it DOES run on OSX.
And no you don't need to pay, I've been using the free version for as long as I can remember and I can do everything I can with iTunes and more.
i have a big problem about "iphone delivering what it promises"
here are some cases where apple break its promises
no flash supported
cant transfer files via bluetooth
ringtone volume and vibra is not enough ,
no profiles,
no copy/paste
And if you've used the TouchFLO interface at all, you'd know that it's NOT the same old WinMo experience.
The email tab alone is worth the price of admission. The fact that you can quickly thumb through your accounts and catch the first paragraph is good enough, but even better is that when you touch a letter to open Pocket Outlook, it doesn't open the whole program, just the account that you need, which makes it faster and more efficient.
This applies to the other elements as well, such as SMS and the quick contacts. You can either press on the persons face to call up the 'call work, call mobile, SMS, email etc page', or press on the phone icon under their name, and it will automatically dial whichever number you've set as the 'most frequently used'. For the browser tab, you can have a list of most frequently visited pages to scroll through, without them having to be just another icon in a pixel sea. The media tab is pretty sweet too, though I wish there was a way to integrate with CorePlayer so I'd have quick access to my native DivX files.
HINT HINT HTC, make a deal with CorePlayer similar to the one you made with NewsBreak (called RSS Hub on the Diamond - download podcasts over the air without worrying about anyone banning the app).
TouchFLO 3D (and 2D on the Opal etc) is much more than a cosmetic upgrade. It's by far the most useful interface I've used on a smartphone, and I've used them all from Apple to Symbian. It makes all functions easy to access, but has depth, if you want it, unless you're an absolute email junkie and can work with a RIM device.
Exactly.
I don't care how big the screen is, how many pixels it has, how fast the processor, or anything else about the hardware --- If the phone runs Windows Mobile, it just can't be an "iPhone killer" -- no matter how hard the manufacturer tries to cover up the monstrosity with custom interface layers.
Although many people (including the press) continue to not understand this point, the primary advantage of an iPhone is *NOT* the nice looking hardware, or the iPod functionality, or the multi-touch.. Although these features are nice and contribute to the experience, the main advantage is the software! Apple focuses the majority of their effort on creating a highly-intuitive, easy-to-use interface and software platform. Remember, the vast majority of people don't want the headache of dealing with the complexities of something like Windows mobile. They want a device that is intuitive, easy to use and gives them access to their email, desktop synchronization, the web, and media features...
The whole "iPhone killer" thing is just media hype. The iPhone was really never that great or good to begin with.
Ok, HTC. You're almost there. Now, I know you're nervous, but that's only natural, this next step is a doozey. Ok, now all you have to do is add a keyboard to it. STOP! Put down the smaller screen, and pick up the keyboard. There you go, just ease it in there. NO! Leave the 3.5 mm jack alone, just put they keyboard on and walk away...there you go. Was that so hard?
::crosses fingers::
is the headphone jack really such a big deal? whats wrong with having a little 4" adapter that's included with the phone?
I used to have to use an adapter on my old Nokia N80 and it was a huge pain in the neck. You couldn't leave it plugged into the phone because the phone wouldn't ring. You couldn't leave it permanently connected to the headphones because then they wouldn't plug into anything else. As a result it was just one more tiny cable that I had to keep track of all the time.
Question from a non-tech guy: can my old iPhone sim card be used in an unlocked version of this phone?
As long as it's still an active line. If your iPhone SIM was deactivated when you got your 3g then no.
Ok look, The LG Prada was the first in the concept, Apple's iPhone was only successful because of the popularity of the iPod and it's UI. Apple gained so much of the market, so its competitors have to do something similar that's how the world of business is. I reckon HTCs new devices such as the Diamond and the Touch HD above are amazing, their TouchFLO 3D is superb which totally changes the crap original WinMo navigation. The touch response is awesome! Despite saying all that I'm getting a Nokia E71 :), I'm a qwerty keypad-aholic.
Wrong. Not only was the iPhone previewed long before anybody had ever heard of the Prada, Apple was working on the iPhone for 3 YEARS before it was finally released.
Hey, it's our good ol' Apple fanboy Zak! How are ya doing? Let me guess, you're going to ask me to show you proof why you're an Apple fanboy like a Philadelphia lawyer?
So three years of development and that was the best they could come up with? You'd have thought that in three years that could have worked out how to make Copy and Paste work.
@ Zak, since you're an apple fanboi, then please give me a date when apple first unveiled their concept pictures of the iPhone, undercover work does not count, I can say that the Apple OS stole my idea, I worked on it 5 years before the Apple was even born.
Did i already say i want this phone? Yes?
...I want this phone...
Heres some HTC-Chromatography: http://digg.com/apple/Here_s_some_HTC_Chromatic_Diamonds
Headphone jack is huge... no reason to cary around another MP3 player if you phone function like one... can't do that with a big USB dongle hanging off the phone...
I agree. Sort of.
But then I realized I could pick up a bluetooth stereo headset for the Touch Pro with a headphone jack. So I can plug it in to just about any audio system and keep the phone in my hand.
Come one now... I dont care if its there first OS... they are not redesigning the wheel here... it doesn't compare to the iphone or TouchFlo... there are TONS of just plain touch handsets out there from other manufacturers that have better interfaces than the G1...
Also... Google had LOTS to do with the design of the phone... there friggin logo is stamped into the back of it... you can't tell me that they let HTC design the whole handset and they just said OK... looks good... please...
I'm betting that they focused more on the operating of Android than the UI, and that, like most Linux distributions, will be easy to theme. There's already work being done on this that looks quite promising. I don't see much difference between this and the interface layer on the Touch HD. It doesn't look fantastic now, but I'd bet a significant amount that Android will be quite amazing around a year from now if it's not killed by carriers, shady business deals, or poor decisions on the part of google.
I assume that you've played with the G1 or at least the devkit emulator (not the crappy web-based one) before you declared that Android has a bad interface? The home screen is easily the best of any mobile OS I've ever used (though I have never used TouchFlo). iPhone's is nothing more than a grid of icons representing every program installed on the phone. It is nearly identical to the home screen of the Palm PDA I had almost 10 years ago.
The ability to fully customize a PC-style desktop is really f-ing cool, and makes a whole lot of sense considering there are some programs you use all the time and some you use on rare occasion. Other than that, you've got the really innovative pull down notifications tray, which is a big step forward in unified UI design in my opinion.
Other than that, the remaining pieces of the UI are all individual apps which are easily replacable. If you think the dialer is hideous, rest assured there will be many alternatives available in short order. Can't stand the text messaging interface? It will probably be a couple of days before somebody makes a clone of the iPhone's SMS screen.
So, really, I'm just wondering what you think is so inexcusably horrible about Android's UI? That UI is one of the main reasons why I'm excited about it, in my opinion it's just a huge step forward compared to what's currently on the market.
do ya guys think theres gonna be a touch HD pro?? that a be awesome no?
It would be thick, and with a phone that's wide too, it would be unusable. But if they could magically make a Touch HD Pro that is as thick as the G1, I'd be the first in line.
when did this become a thread about the G1. seriously. the touch HD looks awesome, has awesome features and a gorgeous screen. The G1 has nothing to do with that. Besides the fact that you are forgetting that T-mobile probably played a part in the design process too. Considering that HTC makes most of their smart phones other than the SideKick. The G1 is cheapy looking and has Google's first attempt at an OS EVER. That doesn't mean it's a bad phone. The OS looks cool, and will probably see many updates once it's released and consumers can really test it. Don't bash something you've never even had a chance to hold in your hands.
I like this phone as well as the Omnia. I’m beginning to think they are just figments of my imagination. Sure I’ve seen them on the internet in photo galleries and video even, but I’ve also seen scantily clad warrior princesses riding unicorns in slow motion on the internet.
Until they come to the states with at&t flavored 3G, these phones are only myth.
If they can port TouchFLO to Linmo or android then call me. I'm done with Winmo phones indefinitely. Until then I'll stick with my Blackberry and an Ipod Touch.
The front cam on the Touch HD (and lacking from the G1) is more important to me than the 3.5" headphone jack that could be solved with a cheap purchase.
The hardware limitations on the G1 are bothering me a lot more than the exterior design (which is starting to grow on me). I imagine it would have taken an average Android developer hours to write an application that swipes pages with hand gestures, had there been a front cam.
Still, I'd miserably choose the G1 over the Touch HD for two reasons:
1) Physical Keyboard
2) Android potential
Check this out:

and again, regarding the G1...Why HTC, why?
zis iz ze iphone killer unt ya!
Anybody know if this runs/will run Android?
oh God... will "Will it run Android" be the new "Will it run Crysis" comment?
Anything could run Android. It doesn't have a compass so I don't think it would be that impressive on street view and other Android apps/games that will use the compass.
There has already been pictures posted with the Touch HD running Android.
Other then that HTC made clear a while back that most their current line-up will be flashable to Android sometime in the near future.
Even if it is hacked to run Android, it is missing the hardware Menu button which is used heavily throughout the OS and basic set of applications (likely to be used in many third party applications as well), so it wouldn't be the smoothest experience. You would need some kind of workaround for it, like some kind of persistant on-screen button overlay or weird button combination shortcut to access the menus.
On the old Palm OS (probably the newers ones, too) you could access the menu bar by tapping at the extreme top of the screen, maybe somebody could throw together a workaround like that which wouldn't be so bad, but it still wouldn't be as ideal as native Android hardware (which will probably be looking as good as the Touch HD by this time next year).
:-D
Some thoughts:
1) touchflo on WM6 is kind of lipstick on a pig. Sure, it looks nice, but sooner or later you'll have to deal with WM, which doesn't.
2) HTC have a long and distinguished history in making handsets, particularly WM ones. They tend to produce several variants on the same chipset - e.g. one with a full qwerty keyboard, on that's all screen and pocketable, and maybe a slider. The innards in this are going to probably be the same chipset as the Kaiser II, and probably the G1 as well. So it doesn't take a genius to work out that sooner or later there's going to be a sexy Android phone.
3) Knocking the G1 for no 3.5mm jack. Sure, maybe it's a bit annoying, but I'd put money on it having the (HTC) standard miniUSB-plus-earphones jack as came on the Artemis/Touch et al. For a couple of quid on ebay you can get an adaptor that lets you plug your standard 3.5mm headphones into it.
you think pigs with lipstick look nice?
I WANT
When is this coming out in the UK?
@pd:
" by the way, all those waiting for TomTom to become available on iPhone ... it is NOT going to happen, simply because of the way iPhone OS architecture is ... it does not support multitasking .. so you cannot listen to music or answer a call, with TomTom running at the same time, thereby defeating the usability of having tomtom on a phone (iPhone)."
To the contrary... my iPhone multitasks just fine. All I had to do was jailbreak it and install "backgrounder". Now my Chat app along with Pandora (which pauses for incoming calls) are coexisting with no problems... Just goes to show that it has absolutely nothing to do with the iPhone OS architecture!!!
As an owner of the HTC Touch Diamond with US 3G, I can attest to the fact that Touch Flo 3D is nothing more than WinMo with lipstick... There is no fluidity when you scroll and you really have to press (sometimes using the stylus or your nail) the little X in the corner of the screen (as an example) to close apps. No comparison....
"To the contrary... my iPhone multitasks just fine. All I had to do was jailbreak it and install "backgrounder". Yes, the keyword in that paragraph being "jailbreak". WM phones multitask out of the box.
I really want to give this thing a test drive, but given past experiences with Windows Mobile I don't think it's for me, if I see some signs of WM actually getting better or updating the UI then I'd jump for it, because honestly there's nothing wrong with functionality.
How much will this thing cost with contract? If it's being called an "iphone killer" shouldn't it be priced in the same ball park as well?
If you got the big BUCKS!! it's a click awy!

Does anyone know which US carrier will get this phone?
FOR THE LOVE OF JEBUS WHY IS SPRINT NORTH AMERICA NOT PICKING THIS UP. I want to wait for you, my beloved Touch HD. Please don't force me in to buying a Touch Pro. I don't want your ugly sister, I want you!
Dude, what did you expect? YOU ARE ON CDMA CARRIER.
1. Remove "SPRINT" from my comment. For all intensive purposes, I am not "on" any carrier (I'm out of contract).
2. Sprint got the Touch, Diamond, and Touch Pro. Why the f*#k would I not assume that Sprint would also carry the HD.
Well when you put it that way, for your own reasoning is the exact reason they wont. Too many options already. moot point now :(
No iPhone killer here.....LOL
Your avatar should read "Im a Hoe" instead..
Your intensive grilling of the HTC Touch HD using your valuable inside knowledge and extensive personal testing and not basing assumptions on a badly translated early review assures me that in fact you must be right!
Get a clue.
This phone looks stunning and I can't wait to get my hands on one, I only hope they release a version with either a qwerty keyboard (Touch PRO style) or Keypad/Thumbboard (Touch Dual). Also I wanna see if the TouchFLO has been improved from the version I tried on an Orange Diamond.
Hopefully they'll have tinkered with it so the added resolution doesnt hinder performance.
One thing to bear in mind is that some carriers fill the ExtROMs with crap and bloatware, which can alter both performance and functionality. For best results you should try a HTC virgin device, or flash the ROM on your carrier branded one.
Does this phone come with a stylus like the standard Touch? I can't tell from the screens. I hate using my fingers to control a touch screen device
Almost certainly yes, the Diamond and Touch Pro both come with styli as do most WM touchscreen phones.
Alo when you factor in the high resolution and some of the fuctions in WM, a stylus is a must.
This phone is badass and would be even more badass if Microsoft update WinMo with the Zune player
How good are the onscreen keyboards in WM6.1?
Tried using the ones in WM5 and 6 many times to no avail, keys too small, fingertips too big.
@MikeWard1701:
"Yes, the keyword in that paragraph being "jailbreak". WM phones multitask out of the box."
Agreed... but the current restrictions on multitasking, placed by Apple, have nothing to do with the OS's architecture. As I mentioned the OS DOES support multitasking....
As far as the virtual keyboard on the Touch Flo 3D goes, the keys are still very small when using the QWERTY, unless you use the "compact QWERTY" as they call it (tap twice to get to W, R, Y etc.) then it's somewhat useful.. I have big fingertips also, that's one of the reasons I went with the iPhone.. and I hate styli.
I've always said that I'd demand a hardware keyboard, and feel even more strongly about it since I do own the iPod Touch. However, this HTC Touch HD would most definitely make me consider giving up the keyboard for the real estate and beauty of that screen. Looks to me like an awesome phone.
