Poll: Is iPhone firmware 2.1 breaking fetch for email accounts?
Just when you think you've escaped the darkened woods of firmware 2.0.2 and previous ilk, along comes 2.1, wrapped in faster-loading-contacts-finery to convince you all is well in the iPhone world. That isn't entirely the case, it seems, if you're user of POP or IMAP mail accounts which are set to fetch messages. Apparently, a maddening bug exists in the new software which -- in the interest of battery power conservation, we assume -- stops the device from pulling down new emails while sleeping... unless the phone happens to be plugged in and charging. An ever-growing thread on Apple's support forums has been barraged with reports of the problem, and editors here at Engadget have certainly felt the burn. So we're putting the question to you, dear readers (and hoping the folks in Cupertino are paying attention). Are you noticing email issues with firmware 2.1? Let us know in the poll below!

| Yes. Why are you doing this to me Apple? | |
|---|---|
| No. Works in the same, totally average manner it always has! | |
| Hard to tell. It's either that, or I'm way less popular than I used to be. |

And here I thought it was just me...
blackberry killer ?
iphone is all hype....nice fon if your 14 yrs old
I could spell at 14 though.
What is that horrible thing under that puppy?
Well I'm 15 so I guess you were pretty accurate. :D
mine works fine.
How do you like your Blackberry?
Often times I must actually access the email inboxes to prompt the download process. Especially after the phone has been sleeping.
Dunno guys what problem is.
Yes, I meant to type it like that.
I just tested this, my iphone is in sleep mode, I emailed a test email at 5:07pm and my iphone vibrated and notified me that there is an email.
The iphone is in sleep mode, not plugged in and is using a gmail apps account.

Sorry, the comment system has not worked for me in what seems to be ages.
Good to know that it works better now...
Ah, another advantage of jailbreaking: because it's a pain to update, my phone is still running 2.0.1. I haven't dropped a call in weeks, and having installed all my apps through iTunes (not via the onboard app store), I've never had any instability. It buzzes like a champ every time I get email, asleep or awake. And to think I was planning on finally updating tonight...
i just bought an iPhone 3g last weekend and I gave my Motorola Q to my wife. Anyway, it's my only apple product and I really really like it. I'm not a power user or a business tard in a suit so it really "suits" me just fine. Everything works, no dropped calls, web surfing is great (except from no flash) and it's easy to use. I know that sounds fanboyish but I really do like it much more than any other phone i've had.
Huh, I thought it was worse at getting email before the update, it wouldn't check for email every 15 minutes like I said and I had to manually refresh all the time, but now I actually get my email when it comes. Maybe I'm just high.
Fetch is working fine for me but I usually have it turned off in favor of Push
Wow, this explains why i couldnt get emails when i knew i had them (from my computer). And actually, i think this indirectly decreases battery life, because i was constantly forcing the mail app to check for mail.
Thanks apple.
Ah well there we go then. I kept checking to see if pulling had gotten to reset to manual because my mail nemver updated correctly unless I opened the app :p. Giveth with one hand breaketh with the other.
I have noticed that as well with the 2.1 firmware. If I have the screen off I won't get mail unless I unlock the screen. Another thing I noticed and wondering if anyone else is seeing this. With 2.02 if I was in Google maps searching for say a restaurant once the pins came up in a section of the map and then I moved the map, the search would refresh and new pins would appear on the newly centered area. This is no longer working for me with 2.1
Yup.. my iphone has gone to crap since the last upgrade.. so much so Im gonna switch back to my crackberry this weekend.
Been a nice ride Apple, but the ride for me is over.
WHY CAN I ONLY SEND ONE PICTURE IN AN EMAIL? ONE!
I've not had any problems with email - but my phone frequently has problems after coming out of sleep mode. Namely, when I go to make a call from my favorites - half the time, it rings, then when the other person picks up they can hear me - but all I can hear is myself echoing in the ear piece. I know of one other person who has had the same problem. Anyone else?
I wish they would have staff that don't have free MobileMe accounts so this bug with fetch would have been caught before release. Seriously, it's not hard to miss. Especially an Apple employee that receives hundreds of e-mails a day. You'd have noticed some messages slipping right away.
And they said WinMo was riddled with bugs... oh Apple you!!!
Glad to know i'm not the only one. Thought maybe it was because of the jailbreak. It is annoying to have to wake up the phone, and go to email just to see if you have new email. Kinda defeats the whole check every 15mins. They need to stop trading one thing for another. I still have to plug my phone in everyday so make it check mail like its supposed too. If I cared about battery life I would have stuck with my i580. Kinda starting to miss it actually.
@ Malweran - I posted at the same time as the other post so I didn't have time to read it.
Regardless what Eddie W is describing is better suited for a laptop not a cell phone. The iPhone resizes photos so that you can fit a couple thousand on your phone vs a couple hundred at full resolution. iPhone is for showing pictures to friends not a full res photo vault.
In the rare case you do need to carry around full res photos you can download a file management apps like the awesome AirSharing app which allows you to do everything Eddie W was asking. AirSharing lets you shares files from the iPhone over WiFi with OSX, Windows, Linux or anything with a browser. Not bad for a limited closed device.
Don't worry you guys will come around soon.
I agree with the other posts, most times it seems as though I have to open the Mail app for it to fetch. It has been this way since 2.0 for me. 1.1.4 my battery life was fine and I got all my emails fairly quickly.....
I'm have a problem with the Alarm Clock, where if you get a SMS message, the alarm clock does not go off.
I am consistently getting my e-mails on both my work and my personal GMail IMAP account within 10 seconds of them being sent (usually beats my desktop) even with my device in Standby Mode, all while being logged into AIM and Google Talk and making/receiving many calls (~1,400 mins a month) and my phone stands up without a charge during a 17 hour day. One thing to mind though; I USE A BlackBerry!
The bottom line is iPhones can’t hang with the big boys. I’ll admit, the iPhone has some cool features that I would like, but for hardcore communication (ie above) you have to go BlackBerry. Waiting to see if the Storm will truly be the best of both worlds…
HTC HD or GTFO
The worst part of this is Apple's lack of acknowledgement of the issue. Sure you read about one or two people that have been told that it's being worked on, but nothing that I can count on.
Also, if you look the wrong way when you're posting a comment on their forum, your post will be deleted or censored. Apple is clearly spending a lot of time and effort on this issue. Unfortunately the time and effort is being spent trying to make sure comments about it are carefully worded on their forum.
I accept when technology has bugs. What I do not accept is when a company is not forthright about things. If they said publicly that "yes, we have an issue, and it will be fixed in firmware release 2.XX on October XX ,and we appreciate your patience", I would get over this issue. Instead it's all being kept hush hush.
Shouldn't this be a major story on technical news sites? Is there a reason it's not on the CNN Technology site? For that matter, TUAW has ignored the issue, and I'm sure many people have emailed them about it (I have). The issue has been going on for a few weeks now. Why is this the first that Engadget has said anything?
Yes, there are forums all over the place discussing it, but where is the high-profile attention that this story should be getting? And where is the response from Apple?
This is a major bug, affecting one of the main features of the iPhone. Why don't we know when there's going to be a fix? I don't understand.
Ummm hello?!?! This is NOT new behavior by Apple. In almost every case where this shit happens. Be it iBook motherboards that are overheating, MacBooks that have the color warn off in a matter of days. 12" PowerBooks that overheat and die. Time and again it takes either a class action lawsuit or a very real threat of one to cause them to act.
Apple isn't this benevolent, warm and cozy company that was in the 1980's. They are the new Microsoft. Apple users need to learn this if they hope to keep Apple falling into further mediocrity. For god sake people. Punish them for putting out shit. Don't buy it! they will learn and learn to start putting more time and effort, and QC, into their wares.
Yep, noticed mine stopped working after not being woken up in the night by emails!
F*ck Blackberry's
love it or hate it - but 10 mil sold iphones arn't too bad.... apple found the right niche (again). and have a look here if you're getting out of power in the middle of nowhere http://de.engadget.com/category/kinetische-energie/
This is the problem with software and why so many companies stay clear of it. An OS is 70% compatibility and the work around for Apple is just that, compatibility. This is the reason Apple does everything in house. This is why they are so revered.
This is also why third party stuff is good and bad. Good b/c you have choices and bad b/c it has to be continually altered(more or less/maybe not) to work with every iteration of the thing they want to work with. It is non stop!
I wish Apple had their own phone network. Damn! That would be revolutionary.
Posted a link to this poll on the Apple forum thread. It was promptly deleted.
Interestingly, any post with language simply stating that Apple needs to step up and officially admit that there's a problem will be deleted or "moderated" with the offending text removed.
... AND my MobileMe refuses to sync. for the life of me, i cannot get my contacts or calendars to push to my iPhone.
i actually love apple stuff i was waiting for the new macbook pro's to come out for it to be my first apple computer, but there is a theme with them that i dont really like. they never take blame for anything bad that happens to their products even tho they keep most of the programming in house. the iphone could be 10x better if it just has simple things that other phones have. (cut and paste, mms ect.) when they realize that they should have done these things they wont put it in because that would be admitting that the great minds there forgot the simple stuff. and when they do update for some reason they take away other stuff that people get pissed about.
their products are cool and that is what people like, they bank on that... any other company out there that would do the stuff apple do they would be shitted on so bad its crazy. apple has the sex appeal so they get to get away with stuff.
just like that hot girl in school, she can be an ass but she gets a pass bc she hot. the not so hot girls could never get away with that.
Where is this big room with the black screen I always see steve jobs standing in front of?
in your polls, you guys need a VIEW option for those of us who dont have any answer's that apply! cus then we are forced to pick a random one, which throws off the results
Yes!!, I'm having issues with email after 2.1 upgrade (with iPhone 2G), allways that I turn on my wifi connection and download emails it work fine, but if I turn off wifi to use Edge connection emails are never downloaded, even if I have configured "Check every one hour", I need to download email manually...for me, 2.1 firmware still having many bugs (failed calls, system hangs, slow access to some features)......Apple: iPhone software still in beta.....for me at least..
I'm sure this has already been posted, but I will put my experience too. I thought that fetch was broken because when I opened up the individual email account, I saw that the time for the last update was longer then 15 mins. which I have fetch set to.
I called Apple and told them it wasn't working. I was told that now the time is only updated when a new email is received. If the iPhone doesn't find a new message on the server, it doesn't update the time by itself. If you manually open the account in the mail app, it will update the time for you.
I just emailed my AOL account (2) times from my laptop and I received both messages while my iPhone was in sleep. It took me a long time to actually trust the delivery system, which I still have my doubts, but it does seem to be working. The last updated time will still be longer then the 15 mins. fetch time if I haven't received a new message.
I also check my email on Safari just to see if I have a message that hasn't been picked up by my phone, just to see if it is working, but it does seem to be working.
@Jon: Don't believe them. Mine updates the "last updated" time every time it checks for mail, even when there's no mail. Maybe this is Apple's latest attempt to make us think everything is OK.
How about fix Fetch and add COPY AND PASTE! Seriously, very impressed with the phone, but being a user of Windows Mobile for 12 years and finding out I can copy and paste I felt a cold and deathly chill go down my spine. I just realized why Apple is the runner up in the PC world. They only do it 96% of the way. The other 4% they charge you for to make their margin. :(
Apple thinks the same way Obama and the Libs do. They decide whats best for us, since we have no clue.
