Press shots and first review of ASUS' sexy Eee PC S101
You've already seen just how sexy ASUS' Eee PC S101 is in person (save for that heinous brown motif), but now you can take a peek at just how luscious this slim slab of computing prowess looks in the eyes of a press photographer. And if you're worried about real-world use, an early review puts those fears completely to bed. Critics found the machine to be absolutely stunning (a real shock, we know), and on the performance end, they were generally pleased. Of note, it did long for integrated WWAN and a tinier price tag, but we suppose you can't have everything. Speaking of which, we're seeing a €599 ($816) price tag for the European model, which clearly includes a premium for the aforementioned overall hotness.

It's an Eee'ified version of my Asus U3S...

Eee is totally ripping off ASUS. Man, what a bunch of cheaters. ASUS was also ripping off Apple, the company that invented communication and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Scythe @ Oct 7th 2008 4:17PM
Hardy har har ;)

@zoop
"Eee is totally ripping off ASUS."
Last time i checked, Eee was a brand of ASUS :S
Rogue_Genius @ Oct 7th 2008 5:05PM
hey x, I think your sarcasm meter is broken. nice work on the "TM" after your name, though. lol
d00b @ Oct 7th 2008 6:05PM
I can see why there's only 1000 of these released to US. "High-end netbook" is an oxymoron, especially in this lousy econ environment. Those who want a "high-end" ultraportable aren't going to settle for a crummy low-res screen and an underpowered CPU. Good C2D ultraportables are starting at $1000 (eg. Thinkpad X200), so $700 isn't much of a difference.
I understand what Asus is doing. It's the shotgun approach, throwing a bunch of crap on the wall and see what sticks. These Taiwan co's don't have much marketing experience, so this is their way of doing marketing research.
AlphaTeam @ Oct 7th 2008 3:46PM
This would compete quite nicely in the consumer market; another great computer by Asus.
Ray @ Oct 7th 2008 3:49PM
I kinda want it, but why no dual core atom? This is supposed to be the top of the product line for asus Eee's, i'll just wait for a version of this with 2 cores.
Joshua Ochs @ Oct 7th 2008 4:33PM
The dual-core Atom for notebooks won't be shipping until well into 2009. The part announced by Intel recently (and note it's announced - not shipping) is a desktop part with different power consumption.
Chin-Poh @ Oct 7th 2008 4:03PM
For this price, I would like to have a higher resolution than 1024x600, how about 1280x768 like on the similarly priced HP 2133?
This would also go great with dual core Atom, but it hasn't been released for netbooks and work has to be done to get around its increased power consumption, remember that!
kali4 @ Oct 7th 2008 4:06PM
Eee. Wasn't there supposed to be a cheap sub-$200 in their lineup? I'm glad that the Eee line was successful (maybe it needs a new moniker... a-HA! Mon-Eee!), but that $200 laptop is starting to look a lot like the football that b!@ch Lucy keeps stealing away from Charlie Brown. Where's the cheap device that could bring a golden age of computing where virtually everyone owns a machine, and those that don't, have access to one? I bet that internet hot-spots would become rather ubiquitous then. I'm also betting that access rates for the internet could actually be forced down through ISP competition. Oh well, I'll just take the opportunity of a kick going wildly wrong and lay here on my back and dream...
Joshua Ochs @ Oct 7th 2008 4:34PM
Give it up. Not happening. Might was well quit your tired bitching.
Zoesch @ Oct 7th 2008 6:02PM
Don't worry ASUS is hard at work on the Eeee-PC brand
zoopthegame @ Oct 7th 2008 4:11PM
Hmmm... Not as good of a value as Apple's MSI WIND OS X which will be $400 at Best Buy.
Justin @ Oct 7th 2008 4:14PM
Engadget,
I don't even read these Eee PC stories anymore. I'm willing to bet your other readers are in the same boat. Please consider saving us the headache--you can still announce netbooks, and Eee PC-related stories--just end this miserable Eee PC netbook/notebook spin-off nightmare.
Thank you.
L @ Oct 7th 2008 4:24PM
If you don't read these stories anyway, and generally don't care, why do you comment on this then? Save both your and our time. Win-Win.
X-Blade™ @ Oct 7th 2008 4:24PM
Screw this
I want to know about Samsungs NC10!!
kali4 @ Oct 7th 2008 4:45PM
I'm so sorry that your glass is half-full. Maybe if people got off their apathetic asses and made a stand for what they want, it would happen. I know nothing is going to happen if you don't do anything. I say complain about it. get your freinds to complain about it too. Don't pay for something if it isn't what you were told it was going to be. When the money is no longer rolling in fast enough, and when the complaing is bad enough, something will happen. It always does. Just don't settle for less than you were after. You ARE these people's income. Whether you see it or not, yuo do have the ability to do something about it. No voice is drwoned out when they are all shouting the same thing.
kali4 @ Oct 7th 2008 4:47PM
whoops, that was supposed to be @Joshua Ochs, in reply to my earlier comment.
my bad!
daschupa @ Oct 7th 2008 5:00PM
Does anyone know if this has a fan in it? I really want a fanless machine since my eee was a bit on the whiny side.
Synfuel @ Oct 7th 2008 5:43PM
Does this have Expressgate? I have not seen a reference to it anywhere
MyHeadisFed @ Oct 7th 2008 7:20PM
Glossy touchpad =[ sweaty hands + trackpad = suck.
golfreak @ Oct 7th 2008 8:32PM
This would be perfect if they had made the screen a little bigger with higher resolution.
This would also solve the problem of the wide border around the screen.
Looks perfect except for the wide border.

HEY iDiOT, YOU MiSSED LOWERCASiNG ONE 'i'!!!i!!
Chin-Poh @ Oct 7th 2008 9:34PM
Wow Clak, we're making progress here. Your actually starting to like the designs of non-Apple notebooks? Making you stop disliking any OS other than OSX will be a different story, but still, I'm proud of you man.
noyp @ Oct 7th 2008 9:44PM
It looks nice, but it drifts away from the original eee, to be an affordable netbook.
OCEAN 'CLAK' NOW 20, SO HAPPY BEING AN EX ENGADGET EMPLOYEE @ Oct 7th 2008 9:57PM
@ chin-poh THANKS, I HAVE TO ADMIT THIS IS ONE GOOD LOOKiNG LAPTOP, THANKS
bidur @ Oct 7th 2008 10:33PM
waste of money.
Conceyted @ Oct 7th 2008 10:34PM
Looks like it is about the size of the Lenovo s10 but not as sleek and streamlined. I prefer the s10 over this.
noyp @ Oct 7th 2008 11:34PM
Clak, see that button that says caps lock? Press it, see that it does.
CJ @ Oct 8th 2008 1:10AM
Don't tell him that!
Now he can type both faster and longer, not that he doesn't have to hold down both Shift keys.
... You've destroyed us all!
x3qt0r @ Oct 8th 2008 4:34AM
why is it called a netbook at 800+ USD.
x3qt0r @ Oct 8th 2008 4:37AM
why is it called a netbook when its priced at 800+ USD.
Brenton @ Oct 8th 2008 8:16AM
All I see is EEEs getting more and more expensive. How about sticking with the friggin' $300 price point and giving me more for my money.
