T-Mobile G1 and Sony Ericsson X1 seen side-by-side, molten lava hangs head in shame
There's really no denying it -- T-Mobile's G1 and Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1 are two of the hottest mobiles around right now, and as predicted, all sorts of sparks flew when the two sat down for a side-by-side photo session. In a Dutch comparison of the two handsets, reviewers pointed out that the G1 was "significantly larger" than the SE counterpart, and while it's completely subjective, they also asserted that the X1 was a "true piece of art in comparison to the dusty look of the G1 [nice one, Google Translator]." Do yourself a favor and check out the whole thing in the read link.

SEXI, indeed.
TimjDav86 @ Oct 14th 2008 7:13PM
I'm not to sure what the negativity is towards windows mobile. I have had nothing but positive results with the operating system. Windows Mobile is here to stay, it could use improvement yes(which they have continued to do), but it already offers far more features then any other OS for phones to date, and its not going to be succeeded any time soon. It will take a while before android or any other OS reaches the functionality and user base that Windows Mobile has claimed over the years of use is has compiled.
Personally I have used WinMo since before it was a phone, starting with my Ipaq 3800 and Ipaq hx4700, both of which has WinMo 2003(and if you did not know, the HP ipag\ hx4700's specs are still better then the newest phones out today!). It was a hard move to WinMo 5 because I was so used to the layout of 2003. My first WinMo 5 PDA..and first good Phone period was the cingular 8125. (came from a black and white screened nokia that did not even use a SIM card for cingular)
I was very happy with my 8125, it was a better version of the HTC Wizard I felt that T-Mobile had with their Vario. I loved being able to get onto myspace/facebook/ebay/email/aim and even to be able to use Excel for work schedules, Power Point for school slides, and Word for typing notes and even papers in a pinch. it may not have been as fast or snappy as my hx4700, but it got the job done, and thats what I needed.
I upgraded to a 8525 and sold the 8125 for $200. The camera on the 8525 was much better, I hated the physical buttons, but got used to them. It was hela lot faster then my 8125 (double speed actually) the only problems I ever suffered was the radio on my 8525's seamed to like to disconnect me from the internet. After 3 phone replacement's ATT sent me a Tilt for FREE
That was a year ago and I have NEVER had to even soft re-set my Tilt unless installing a program required it. My 8925(tilt) makes me so happy and has been super reliable through thick and thin. It's a valuable asset especially now that I have GPS and a 8GB sd card for my music ( goes nice with my Moto stereo bluetooth headset at the gym)
Although I see all these nice phones coming out, I see no added benefit to upgrading at this point. The X1 seams like the first choice because its will be well designed, will have a higher build quality and have good specs with a very versatile operation system that already has thousands upon thousands of applications made for it, and older versions that are compatible. not to mention the screen resolution and size is larger then the HTC's new line up (excluding the Touch HD which we will not see)
The HTC touch diamond will go to those that prefer to use the stylus for txt entry, and mostly use there fingers on getting quick up-to-date information with touch-flow 3d(which is a awesome program btw). Its very small for device that can do so much, and very nice looking too. The Pro version will feed those that need the physical keyboard and crave the VGA screen(actually both versions) and SD card expansion. I used to be ok with just text entry via a stylus from my old PDA's...but ever since my first slider phone the 8125 I got hooked..
I am very surprised that HTC did not bring the touch HD to the states. With the Iphone being so popular, it seams like it would be a solid competitor for those not wanting to jump on the iphone bandwagon, but still have a full large touch screen phone. Additionally the iphone caters to a different consumer then the windows mobile customers. The market is still there!
Good luck to every one in there evaluation on what phone suits there needs best. For me it's the Tilt. I do not NEED the VGA screen that the new phones are bringing...sure it would be nice, but my needs to not require it. Just like I do not need a faster processor or storage beyond the 32gb cards my phone will support. I have wifi, 3g, bluetooth, a awesome keyboard, and access to thousands of very usfull 3d party applications to suit my needs.
I even have a cell phone watch that I take with me when I do not need the functionality of my Tilt. This gives me hope that one day I can carry a MID around which will give me alost FULL PC specs to carry around in my pocket ;)

thats easily one of the longest comments i have ever read. But i would have to agree somewhat, i do like WinMo, but at times, with some lower end phones like the Q, it acts quite sluggish.

What the hell does your comment have to do with anything NightBlade wrote? Why not just comment instead of replying. I hate when people reply just to get their comment at the top.
noyp @ Oct 7th 2008 9:04PM
I, for one, read the whole post. I want my two minutes back.
Raziel1 @ Oct 8th 2008 3:06AM
Why do you think that the Touch HD is not comming to US? It's not even out anywhere. ofcourse it will come to US but first to europe.
Andy @ Oct 27th 2008 11:42PM
Windows Mobile is hot trash........
Daniel @ Oct 7th 2008 2:04PM
I don't care what OS it is using, the black X1 is a sexy looking phone.
no, thank you @ Oct 13th 2008 5:12PM
I do care and I prefer Android OS
rock99rock @ Oct 7th 2008 2:35PM
@no, thank you
It is your preference, and youve never held a device that ran it. I hope you arent a CTO. Or an IT Manager. Or someone whos decisions dont really impact anyone.
Unisyst @ Oct 7th 2008 2:41PM
You can always install Android on the X1, and have the best of both worlds.
I'm probably going to end up installing and using Android on my HTC Touch Vogue. I have it on there already but the version I have is a little too alpha for my tastes.
yaniv.chokron @ Oct 7th 2008 3:02PM
1st of all... THANK GOD SOME UPDATE ON THE G1.... I was dying for something .... ANYTHING.. new!
Second... the link doesnt work :(
Thirdly..... there is no comparison... yes they are both cell phones, yes they are both touch screens, however, the X1 is 2.5 times more expensive ($1000 nay I say I wont pay). Also, the X1 runs on WinMo.
Now I live Microsoft... yes yes I know.. I can here the jibes now..... but Ive been a developer for a number of years now (and in fact I develope on the .Net platform so Im not against MS); the WinMo platform is just not ready for primetime. Its slow...... or rather i t s s l o w . . .
also, poor poor poor poor memory management.
Ive had 4 WinMo phones, each time I say... NO MORE...... I wont do it again, and each time Ive gone and tried a new one (the last 2 being the T-Mobile Dash & the TyTan). Beattiful bricks is what they are.
Im on the Curve right now and it works... period. Email, notes, docs...... whatever! It works. Yes here and there I get a hiccup.... but NOTHING compared to WinMo. I used to have to reboot my WinMo phone AT LEAST 3-4 times a day (please note, this isnt just because of WinMo... this also has to do with manufactorers placing subpar processors in the machine, but MS allows it so...).
Now.... G1 Open Source! BAM!
Qualcom 528 Mz CPU! BAM BAM!
3G 7.2 Mps and GPS! LORD HELP ME! BAAAMMM!
microSDHC out of the box.... 16 FRIKKIN GB!!! BAM YOU MOTHER EFFFERS!!!
and to top it off... a cute touch screen interface.
Now... Im sure one day MS will finally make a mobile OS (winMo 7?) to compete.... but till then... wheres my G1?? MY PRECIOUSSSSSSS
Mycroft @ Oct 7th 2008 3:20PM
The X! does not have an accelerometer from what I hear, and so if you port Android to the X! you would not be able to use street view. I think the best solution is to port Android onto the Touch Pro. Now that's a phone.
Jonosono @ Oct 7th 2008 4:28PM
@ yaniv.chokron
Are you Emril?
ronald.raygun @ Oct 7th 2008 2:09PM
dusty looking in comparison, eh? until you see windows mobile peek its ugly head out. they better cover it up a lot
noyp @ Oct 7th 2008 9:34PM
But some people want a physical keyboard. I am one of them.
noyp @ Oct 7th 2008 10:34PM
Wait, that wasn't for you. I can't find the comment anymore!
Phoenix @ Oct 7th 2008 2:11PM
And where's the Touch Pro?
Will H. @ Oct 7th 2008 5:38PM
I'd have a Touch HD over both of these, neither of these phones are particularly good looking imo.
put4558350 @ Oct 7th 2008 2:12PM
How about x1's price ?
Dave @ Oct 7th 2008 2:17PM
Exactly. It's kind of odd to compare the two. I have a feeling the X1 will list for twice the price of the G1.
Frankenstein Black @ Oct 7th 2008 2:19PM
Mobile Planet is listing unlocked pre orders for $949.99.
http://www.expansys-usa.com/p.aspx?i=163460
This high price plus the decreased value of my 401k makes me sad ;^(...
Also haven't heard of any US operator offering a subsidy on it. (sad x2 ;^(... ;^(...
utahnkid @ Oct 7th 2008 2:14PM
Two of the hottest?? Are they speaking literally? Because unless they mean the phones are hot to the touch, they must know something about them that the rest of the world doesn't. Last time I checked people stopped caring about the X1 after the first bland review and WinMo hasn't seen someone excited since Ballmer opened his phone last.
Dr Zoidberg @ Oct 7th 2008 2:49PM
What a load of bull.
Malkmus @ Oct 7th 2008 4:20PM
There has yet to be a review of the final production unit. And since the protos were sent out the ram has been increased to 384mb. FYI, that's an eff lot of RAM.
Frankie @ Oct 7th 2008 2:16PM
I know I'll get low rankings by you SE fanboys, but the Xperia, especially in this photo, looks butt ugly. which shouldn't be the case because it's next to the arguably G1 (which I happen to be inlove with).
arhain @ Jan 26th 2009 1:17AM
you're ugly
Frankie @ Oct 7th 2008 3:56PM
@Arhain
That's not what yo momma said! Seriously though, The Xperia was attractive to me when it was first announced, but I think we can all agree that this is one of the most delayed handsetts next to the M8.
Trust me, as a WM fanboy; I wanted to see this thing flurish! But with Micrsoft dragging their feet on WM7, and the recent let down with
Touch HD not coming to the States "How much more can a brotha take?"
I've preordered the G1 and I'm anxiously anticipating it.
The Xperia is virtually vaporware at this point.
Poom @ Oct 7th 2008 3:19PM
Are you blind?? -_-"
I guess everyone has preferences, but I still can't believe someone says this goddamn sexy phone is ugly.
Phil @ Oct 7th 2008 3:55PM
Hear hear! In my opinion both of these phones look absolutely abysmal in the above picture. The G1 looks ugly at the best of times, but most of the promotional shots I've seen of the X1 had it looking quite sexy. Looks aside, with the abortion that is Windows Mobile installed on it, it doesn't matter how good the hardware is.
I'm not feeling Android, either, but the handset is ugly enough that it doesn't matter what the OS is like, I'm really not going to give it a second look.
Android has potential though; these days there's a definite trend emerging in the Windows Mobile market of trying like buggery to hide the steaming pile of crap that is WM 6 under tons of sluggish but shiny alternative UIs. If Android can pull that off without needing the pocket equivalent of a CRAY supercomputer to make it run at a reasonable speed then WM is toast.
Yup. I bought into the iPhone. I've had my hands upon the HTC Touch Diamond and thought it was an ugly brick, I've had my fill of WM phones after the sluggish heap of crap that was the HTC Kaiser.
Just give me an iPhone clone with the same OSX derived software, the ability to multi-task and an 800*480 resolution screen and I will be even happier than I already am.
Zachary @ Oct 7th 2008 4:17PM
I don't think the X1 is ugly but it certainly looked better to me when they first announced it. I think the bottom buttons look more cheap/plasticky and less finely crafted than I had originally thought. The G1 software looks okay but I don't get why the keyboard is off-center.
xxx8sxe @ Oct 7th 2008 2:17PM
Ugh...WinME makes me sick.
chefgon_ign @ Oct 7th 2008 2:56PM
Then upgrade to XP! Or downgrade to 98. Why are you talking about Windows ME anyway?
lawyer bird @ Oct 7th 2008 4:09PM
that's awesome
Arke @ Oct 7th 2008 11:56PM
@chefgon_ign
Haha.
Boy you sure have a sense of humor.
TareX @ Oct 7th 2008 2:17PM
I actually prefer that the G1 has a fixed part that remains next to the keyboard when opened. That way you can have easy access to a directional pad (or trackball in the G1 case). May I point out the Xperia keyboard doesn't even have directional arrow keys.
Moreover, the G1's physical keys are a lot easier and comfortable than the triangular fashionable Xperia keys. BoyGenius thinks so, WMexperts think so, and Unwired.net thinks so too. It ONLY serves a fashion purpose, and sacrifices functionality.
Speaking of fashion, of course the overall look of the G1 is not quite as slick as the Xperia. But with next iterations (G2,3,4) I'm sure they'll reach the balance of function (physical keys still next to open keyboard) and fashion (the lip doesn't look like... a lip) and it will be a magnificent device all-around.
andrew @ Oct 7th 2008 2:24PM
the xperia has a track pad too.
TareX @ Oct 7th 2008 2:29PM
Yes but it's not fixed next to the keyboard when it's open, which was the whole point I was making.
MR,FREEZ @ Oct 7th 2008 2:20PM
Even better just buy a iPhone 3g.
case closed.
Argot @ Oct 7th 2008 2:22PM
Please be quiet, we are discussing REAL phones overe here. Take your crapple phone and head over to the childrens corner.
ill trooper @ Oct 7th 2008 2:41PM
Argrot: infuriating how "the children" already have their phones and thriving application market in their mitts while you salivate over these photos, huh?
Just sayin'...
jakem @ Oct 7th 2008 2:42PM
Didn't you get the email? Nobody cares about the iPhone anymore.
Oh, of course you didn't :)
Bryant @ Oct 7th 2008 2:45PM
"thriving application market"
Sorry, ill trooper, no such thing while competition on the platform is prohibited. Thus, the iPhone isn't a real phone.
Zak @ Oct 7th 2008 3:53PM
Maybe you can help me out here. It's not a real phone because Apple has already sold over 10 million of them this year, or it's not a real phone because it has thousands of apps available for it? Or maybe it's not a real phone because it has a web browser that got a 100 on the Acid3 test? Or because it has a real email client? Or maybe because it's an actual iPod. Is that why it's not a real phone?
You'll have to help me out here, I'm still having trouble understanding how the iPhone isn't a "real phone". Oh I know, it's because it has the best battery life of all 3G phones on the market isn't it? Or maybe it's because it has the best interface and a capacitive touchscreen. I don't know, I still can't figure out why it's not a real phone.
Argot @ Oct 7th 2008 4:04PM
@Zak
10 million is nothing. Most real phone companys sell that many before breakfast. And if you belive that other crap you wrote then I have a bridge I would like to sell to you!
Zak @ Oct 7th 2008 4:41PM
Really? 10 million units of a SINGLE MODEL of phone? HTC hasn't sold 10 million units of any of their Touch models yet this year, so what does that tell you? As far as "the other crap I wrote" it's not surprising to me that you couldn't come up with anything to say about it. So how about this, I'm going to force the issue on you.
PROVE to me that the iPhone does NOT have: A capacitive touch interface, an iPod built in, a real email client, a web browser that got a perfect score on the Acid3 test. Prove those things using real facts, not opinion, and provide sources for all of it. Until you can do that, you are unequivocally full of shit, and everything I said still stands.
You Apple haters are so one dimensional. When presented with facts, you backpedal and start name calling, Watch, it'll happen again. :D
Argot @ Oct 7th 2008 4:45PM
The only reason Apple sold 10 million is because that the ONLY model they have!
Wow... One model.. Kind of like going to the store in the old Soviet union! :D
Face it, the iPhone is a joke and there is no reason what so ever in buying one when you have great phones like the Xperia on the market.
oZ @ Oct 7th 2008 4:51PM
Zak:
* The iPhone does not have 100% on Acid3 yet. Webkit does, but that release isn't Safari yet. Note, also, that Nokia's S60 phones and Android use Webkit as well.
* The battery life thing is a myth, it was never tested against Nokias or most European 3G handsets.
jakem @ Oct 7th 2008 5:15PM
@Zak
IMO a real smartphone has copy & paste, a complete bluetooth stack, the ability to be used as a modem, an unrestricted development platform, a removable battery, no reception problems and continues to receive push email regardless of whether it's sleeping or not.
If you object to any of the above please feel free to comment but I'm only interested in facts and require citations too.
BTW, I believe you were the one who started abusing people.
Alan Strangis @ Nov 20th 2008 1:31PM
"thriving market place" my butt!
I've been able to download apps for my WM and Palm devices for years, and not restricted to a single source, and I can even copy and paste text, which is one of the most basic requirements for a smart phone.
BTW, Opera 9.5 on my HTC Touch got a 68 on the acid3 test, while Firefox got a 71. Who gives a crap about
@Zak: How can you say "single model", when the iPhone has the original, as well as multiple colours/memory configs of the 3G? Until the end of August, the TOTAL sales of all iPhones was just shy of 7 million. That's including the first gen and initial 3G sales.
In 2007 HTC alone sold 11.8 million phones. As of end of August 2008, their yearly sales were up over 33%.
Not to mention that Blackberry outsells both the iPhone AND WM.
I'd copy and paste the links to you, but I'm sending this from a friend's iPhone. My HTC Touch is busy acting as a 3G modem for my EEE PC, while downloading a bunch of podcasts.
