World's largest LED screen coming to Dubai
By this point, you should fully understand that "Dubai" and "world's largest" go hand-in-hand, so it's quite fitting that said city is receiving the planet's most humongous LED screen. Designed by UAE development company Tameer Holding, the 33-story high display will reportedly be "embedded on an intended commercial tower in the Majan district of Dubailand," where it will stand tall and blast out advertisements to onlookers some 1.5-kilometers away. Dubbed Podium, the building will also house 33 levels of "premium commercial office space, two floors dedicated to retail and four floors for parking." There's no word on when the project will be completed, but we don't suspect Tameer will be dragging its feet in getting this up.

But it's not a widescreen!
I guess that's something for the next sheik to do.
The aspect ratio is all wrong to watch anything on it. But then I realized its for futuristic stadium seating in which you lay on your tempurpedic space pillow and watch movies from the moon.
Yeah it's not widescreen, it's tallscreen!
Tilt your head like 90 degrees to the right, Problem solved!
Ah I wondered where the earths money was at!
So Blade Runner takes place in.. Dubai?
Is it going to be run by Windows? I look forward to world's largest BSOD... :P
no, actually its gonna run leopard. i look forward to seeing the largest spinning circle of death in the world. fyi: im not an osx or vista fan, i use a mac but i use ubuntu, windows, and osx on it about equally.
Harrah's in Atlantic City is 46 stories high and wraps completely around the building.

Yeah, but thats not a "Full" screen, the screen on that building is just strips of LED's on every floor or so, if I remember correctly. This screen actually has every inch of the building covered with pixels making it an actual "Screen" Not saying the Harrah's one is not impressive, just two different things.
You can now see porn miles away!
No you can't... it's in Dubai...
Unless someone hacks it, in which case I bet it would be turned off within minutes.
you're probably right, they are kinda creating a city "artificially" that is to say not letting it grow like the average city does
Arabs are so tacky. They are the world's nouveau riche.
Tacky, tacky screens.
See what fellahin buy when they get money?

what happened to my up-to-date engadget???
Didn't your girlfriend tell you that finishing first doesn't mean you're the best?
just think of the heat output from this. I know its LED, but still its got to produce a fair bit of heat.
Suntan from 1.5k away?
Your tax dollars hard at work.
maybe if i were a taxpayer in dubai....but i live in the good ol US of A....where my tax dollars are wasted on other things...but i wont get into that on this great gadget blog....
FAIL, Dubai is tax-free
The UAE does *not* have personal income taxation... no tax wasted.
Or are you implying that your gas money is going there? Because the Emirates are more known for trade and tourism.
i wonder with all the high-risers and all, would the ad still be visible once "everything" is completed? wouldn't all the biggest, largest, tallest be blocking some of the view, in some way, from pretty much all the angles?
Theme song for this bad boy: 'frank's 2000 inch TV' by Weird Al Yankovic
Come on! Let’s just be glad this stuff is going on, in real life instead of some movie. It might not be here in the states like we all want, but this tech will be out there and will eventually make its way here. Let them spent their petro-dollars that just one more cool city we could visit one day, what’s so bad about that?
Let's play halo 3. now we need the speakers to match this screen.
That's where most of the gas money goes...
And not to mention about the ventilation this piece of crap needs, the frequency for replacement, the heat and waste it generates...
Brilliant idea on advertising your brands and showing off while at the same time supporting the destroy of our world~
could that thing GET any bigger???

This reminds me of SimCity a little.
Try to grow a city too fast, and it collapses. Do it too slowly, and people will move out.
How will Dubai look in 50 years?
So many funny comments. This is one of the reasons I visit this site. You guys crack me up. Especially the comment about exchanging the panel because of dead pixels. Imagine how much more enlightening this site would be if there was some way to pass all the highest rated comments along with the article text to RSS readers.
this is awesome however it's WRONG.
One question for engadget, why aren't any of the other Gulf Countries hot news ever mentioned. I for one have submitted a lot of news.
That is NOT the world's biggest screen. That's only 33 floors high compared to the one in Doha which is 600m tall!
Oryx Tower which announced a FULL LED board like this a good two years ago!

The Philippe Stark Building with interactive LED screens in Education City.
RFID Mail (first in the world) in Qatar
Or how about the Tornado Tower which is completely covered in animated LEDs?

For the ones talking about energy consumption of lights. Flourescent bulbs use less energy if left on 24 hours a day than if they are turned off and on. They also have a longer longevity. Starting them up burns away one of the chemicals used on the starter.
Go the Arabs!!
I think Dubai IS SETTING A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF GET'R DONE and their leadership is better then our leadership! I'm a proud veteran and war sucks almost as bad as a childs hunger. But the fact is, our LEADERS/POLITICIANS.................SUCK!
Every 10-20 years someone makes some dire prediction about worldwide famine/starvation/nuclear winter/overpopulation/energy shortages, etc. And when the dates that they say these things will happen come and go, nobody calls these people out for their mistakes.
So, some Nobel Prize-winning scientists predict the end of the world as we know it in 2070. Yawn.
Time to develop nuclear power plants from sea to shining sea.
WTF! There's a place called "Dubailand"? Awesome!
OH! LED SCREEN! .......
wow it would be so cool if i could play x-box on it lol
this is why the saying "what makes the world go round" is going to stop at each country, continent, island etc.and their won't be a big brother to help anyone out.
aah .. my petrol money.
i wonder what the 3 year extended warrentee costs ?
It will dispaly advertisments kilometers away .... until a tall building is build across the street. :-)
I can see a dead pixel!
Come on that screen is just begging for a game of Tetris!! It just has to be done! I suggest a worldwide Tetris DS tournament to decide who gets to play on it.
Wonder what the resolution will be...
