everything's becoming media-centric....wow
not to mention everything is getting Coverflow...
I know some people don't like it, but I actually can't wait. Although, I guess I'll have to wait...unless anybody wants to help me blackmail Microsoft to get them to release it early. :P
Anyone really unexcited about this? From what I have seen, it makes navigating slower, and does not really offer anything new (aside from the game installs).
On my 20GB Premium, it will allow me to install 1 game, big whoop. From what I see, it gives a very marginal increase in speed (10 secs GTA IV bootup time), but takes an hour to install.
Sure there is lots of hype, But I can't see why, they are just copying Sony/Apple/Nintendo..
Sorry but last time I checked Sony/Nintendo don't have 8 person private chat, or the ability to stream Netflix. Come to think of it neither of the other two companies have a marketplace to rival XBL Marketplace...or even a network of users as big as Xbox Live. The only community I can think of bigger than Live's is maybe the WoW community. Get your facts straight before you say they copy everything. Thanks :-)
(I tried posting this earlier but I don't know if it went through...if this double posts sorry.)
I can't wait for this! http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&link=ournextgame
@Mike "they are just copying Sony/Apple/Nintendo"
lol, how did Apple get thrown in there? So now no matter what anyone does in any industry, it's copying Apple?
I am actually excited, and the whole entire experience will be new.....The whole market is based off of ideas and concepts, and when someone comes out with something new, the only thing you can do is copy or improve or youll get left behind.
I believe MS is trying to reach out to a multiple consumers, Wii hearted ones, and I personaly believe that, just because the front of the box looks different that whats inside wont change, the games will be the same and really, how much time do you spend on your Dash?? not much, so will this really matter if your a gamer? Probably not, this is only gonna bring new nubs the scence of a fight that we can curb stomp with pleaseure.
Nonetheless its your Opinion, have at it.
I downloaded the play on media center, and now my ps3 has netflix and hulu, I have both systems.
I was always talking trash about how the ps3 just sits there and collects dust, however for the past month my xbox has not been able to connect to my pc. It used to work exceptionally well....

@Cody: Both Sony and Nintendo are going to have multi-party chat, Nintendo even going the route of room to room chat. As far as a marketplace, Nintendo definitely has more gaming titles though MS has movies and the like. Xbox Live's community is not as large as the Battle.net community nor WoW, and I'd go so far as to say there are other PC gaming communities that are larger...not that any of it really has anything to do with this dashboard update. Having more of something doesn't mean they're innovating.
What people are getting at with the copying accusations are Sony's Home Avatars, Nintendo's Mii's and Channel Dashboard, and Apple's simplified menus that even the Wii is compared to.
if it reduces the NOISE of the disc drive, I'll be really really happy! I have an elite (120gb) so i can load up the games i play the most.
@cody,
Sony has 6 person video chat with the PSN. So, MS is trying to catch up to what Sony had when they launched the PS Eye.
NUH NUH NUH NUH NUH NUH NUH NUH BATMAN!
How insightful...
Did you just respond to yourself?
Indeed I did.
not nearly enough "NUH"s. you need 16.
if you do it twice. nvm.
no i think there's 16
ill be way to busy with Gears 2 to make an avatar...
Afraid to waste 60 seconds of your life with us?
i need every second i can get with gears and judging by the article, i don't really want to "prep for serious avatar creation"

damnit internetz what the hell man
WOOT WOO...
Aw, I forgot... my Xbox got stolen. :(
Well, even though I am buying a PS3, I am still an Xbox 360 fanboy at heart. It's just that, when your Xbox gets stolen, and then exactly 1 month later they break in again and steal the rest of your games, you want a fresh start. But at least those bastards left fingerprints!
I'm sorry, you guys prolly don't wanna hear about that. But I will say that this new dashboard looks better (and cleaner) than the current Xbox user interface.
same thing happened to me. Finger prints and all, I even got a description from a witness...three black guys. Never did see any of me stuff.
Hey now, as a (half) black man, lets try to keep the color commentary to a minimum, okay?
But still, I know first hand how rough a loss in the gadget family can be, so I'll cut you some slack.
I think he was just trying to relate the further disappointment felt after receiving such a needlessly a vegue and unhelpful witness profile.
"Yes, it was any three of 20,000 people within the city. Have fun finding your equipment, gotta go play my Xbo- ...my coffee maker. I love that game. Bye."
Also, vegue is the new vague. Got to stay hip, right?
Looks like an XMB with photos. Way to be innovative again MS.
Last I checked the XMB goes horizontal...this goes vertical. :P
XMB is just windows media center. MS is just following their own model really.
Do want!
GET!
About time...
I have a feeling i'll be using my PSP again this November...
I like Microsoft.
But, I love Microsoft.
Microsoft loves our money!
Besides the 8 person party thing, I couldn't care less about the NXE.
The 8 person party thing is real awesome.
But avatars just lookw wierd, they're not as cute as Miis or as cool as the Home people.
Fiver says playstation will change it now XBOX has
I thought they already said last month it would be in November, right?
Probably the biggest complaint I hear, both at home and in the office, about Microsoft Office 2007 is that the changes that Microsoft made in basic user functionality was a 10-year step-backwards condition. I have to wonder if this "let's make it different, not better" approach is going to take shape on the dashboard approach.
It takes a bit to get used to it, but I'd say 'the ribbon' interface is better & faster for 98% of all functions within the office suite. The most used functions are found with a right click, vs hunting through menus.
Autodesk products are all rolling out ribbon menus this year too. So other companies seem to agree.
I don't like it. It looks gay and childish.
But I don't care anyway...cause I don't own an Xbox360.
"I don't like it. It looks gay and childish."
This brings up too many childhood memories?
they should allow some free online play for silver membership, now I prefer to buy ps3 version of MUL platform games because of that ,since I have little time to play online but I still like to do so once in a while.
if you can't afford to spend 50 dollars a year on a xbl subscription i suggest you go and mow lawns or get a job of some sorts.
wow, it's going to be chaos on November 19! I wonder how many red rings of light will be reported on that day. I think i'm going to wait for like a week before I update. lol
I am excited for this as well. I think it will be pretty sweet however I have a feeling I am going to miss the old dashboard, it's pretty much perfect :P.
Bow Poo, that's when you put a bow on poo to pretty it up. Not to be confused with Poo Bow, where you put poo on a perfectly fine bow.
So can I "pirate" games from my friend?
sure ye can, as long as yer matey be havin' a parrot on his shoulder. Otherwise, that be illegal. ARRGGGHHH!!!
Looks like the XMB on the PS3 is finally getting to them...
Lets not forget the Wii's influence.
Just got a 360 (a month ago). Didnt like the "old" dashboard, so looking forward to this one.
Have a PS3 and must say, that the XMB is more sleek IMO. But in the end it dosent matter much for me, as long as I have great games. Both consoles are great at that.
Sorry El Taco no pirating you need the original Disk in the drive to launch the backup from the Hard Drive. Besides please support the company, by the original.
Did I see right in the Lips demo video that you can plug up your Zune and use it as a Karaoke? If so then DAMN that will rock.
They better nail Zune support with this update. I mean the two need to work like they come in a box together.
This whole thing about Sony and Nintendo having a multi-person chat too, perhaps even switching chat rooms. To be perfectly honest, I think this is ridiculous. You can't be as popular as to have several parties going on at the same time, and having to switch between them to catch mere snippets of conversations and not even get the full story. It's like when Americans (no offence, but in the UK we don't actually have this) switch phone chat in movies, it's like, "hold on, I've got someone on the other line - hi, yeah, yeah, right i'm in the middle of a call, one moment - sorry about that, it was work; what were you saying? Uh huh, yeah, oh I see, one moment, I've got another call coming through ..."
The whole thing would just get ridiculous, at least with 8 people in a party all having a conversation, and not even the 8 person space being filled, everyone can get a word in edgeways and understand what's going on and who's opinions are who's, and perhaps make some arrangements.
And yes, how DOES Microsoft start copying Apple with the whole Xbox thing - are they starting to think that they should maybe bring out a gaming console too? 'Cause if so - you have that the wrong way round, that would be Apple copying Microsoft or Sony or Nintendo or whatever other console manufacturers there are out there. And I'm telling you now, if Apple does bring out a console they will be receiving no support from me whatsoever, Apple will just lose its originality and innovation and will be seen as jumping on the bandwagon.
One last thing - how the hell can you prefer a PS3? Sure, the online is free and it has a "built-in web interface", but they're trying to make you think you're getting a bargain because you paid so much god damn money for the console in the first place. I pay a fiver a month for my Xbox Live and it doesn't bother me one bit. My Xbox was relatively cheap for all the use I get out of it, and it's a mere five pound extra per month to play online.
Xbox 360 is clearly the way forward. I don't think I'll bother installing my games onto the HDD anyway, that would just make the common disk obsolete.
