RIM said to be toiling away on BlackBerry super-phone, Storm successors
So the BlackBerry Storm hasn't even made it onto Verizon yet, and in flies word that RIM is actually doing something other than resting on its laurels (and contemplating buyout offers from Microsoft). The Boy Genius has it from two independent sources that RIM is currently hard at work on a "super-phone" of sorts, complete with a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera, 1GB of memory and a "near-HD quality screen." In all seriousness, it's not too shocking to hear that the outfit is working up a formidable opponent to go against HTC's Touch HD / T8290, but it's not stopping there. We're also told that a second and third-generation Storm are already being whipped up in the design room, but it's pretty safe to say you won't be seeing those in the flesh for a good while. Regrettably, that's it for the details, but you can rest assured that we'll be keeping an ear to the ground for more.

TRAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All i want from RIM is a better freakin web browser.
The current one is painful, and Opera Mini isn't much better.
Am I missing one that's available?
...is Opera Mobile 9 available for BB OS? If it is, you should get it, it's amazing. I have it on my HTC Vogue and I love it.
If it's not available on BBs, then I guess you are stuck with opera mini for now.
No, it's not. It's for windows devices only.
...oh, well...then your SOL I suppose....
Correct me if i am wrong, but doesn't os perfrmance take a hit with a higher resolution display?
This may not be a big deal for regular operations but web browsers are very memory intensive and thus the browsing experience may suffer.
What's the deal? Anyone?
"is Opera Mobile 9 available for BB OS? If it is, you should get it, it's amazing.."
Just one question: Have you used iPhone's Safari browser? Opera mobile 9 doesn't come CLOSE in smoothness and responsiveness, at least not on ANY device I've used.
And the OP is right.. Check out the Storm v Iphone comparison video. The Storm doesn't even have graphics acceleration -- the browser is slow, choppy, and unresponsive with you try to scroll, pan, and zoom around a webpage.
How is this news?
Why is everyone constantly surprised that a company is working the successor to their latest product either before it ships or just after?
this is *normal* folks!
Excuse those who aren't industry insiders who would undoubtedly know this incredibly well known and logically obvious fact.
I never really found Blackberries to be very appealing to be honest but these new generation phones are really nice and I can only assume they can get better from here on out. Maybe my next phone will be a Crackberry... Or maybe it'll be the next iteration of the iPhone. Only time will tell whether either will be decent enough to pick up, but Apple needs to get it's shit together with the next iPhone: high res screen, updated native apps ("like such as" the Youtube app with new functionality to few profiles and comments and add your own), and a decent, at least 3.2mp camera with flash and autofocus & a front-facing camera with ability to record video and upload directly to your Youtube profile. That'll give RIM a run for their money next generation too.
all I want is a phone with internet multimedia capabilities.
FLASH and JAVA.
I don't care who makes it.
The only reason I bought an iPhone was because it had Youtube.
I do like my iPhone because taking a photo and sending it to an email contact is easy (though phone to phone pic messages are absent). I also like the ease of synching my contacts from iTunes to Yahoo.
I want to be able to go to Flash websites and see them. I want to be able to join chat rooms if I ever felt like doing that again.
5Mpix and 1GB! That's a real superphone, folks. I guess it is to Americans and their RAZR's.
Gee keppo, i can hardly read your post. I guess that's because you tried to make a wise-crack about the greatest country on earth. ;-D
I had a Cingular Blackberry 9xxx.
BEST PDA I'd used up till that point, but the large flat body made talking on it awkward and made it neccessary to have bluetooth or a headset.
Synching contacts for me was difficult because I perfer to use Yahoo or Outlook to manage my contacs.
The 9000 series phones have not come to At&t/ Cingular yet and BlackBerries sync with Outlook almost by default. Are you sure it was a BlackBerry?
Haaa, that's going in the right direction. 3 years ago I was dreaming of a device that could maximize the screen up to the edges. This and the HTC HD will almost meet my dream.
Buy HTC HD you got more apps and options/accessories... you have choice of 3 desktop grade web browsers... Opera 9.* NetFront 3.5+ and IE6.* ( its desktop grade in latest builds of WM6.1) IMHO: PC is becoming Personal again with these devices..
@ FI*R:
Suggestions to "get the HTC HD" are irrelevant to North Americans. There will be no Touch HD with North American bands.

@Jake + ConvertOST:
I agree that the HTC HD is the foreseen best pocket device. I'm confident that it'll come to my carrier by the time (dec 09) I'll be eligible for a 500$ device cash back on 3 year contract renewal :) (Telus).
Desktop grade? Haha not quite. No "desktop grade" browser currently exists on ANY phone. Of course this comes down to what you consider a desktop grade browser to be, but I imagine FULL Java, FULL Flash, and FULL Shockwave, (I'm sure I missed a few) support would make the list. "Mobile versions" exist for just about every one of those but the last time I checked "mobile version" and "desktop grade" didn't fit in the same sentence.
I'm sure this new super phone will sell well during a worldwide economic meltdown ...
Seriously RIMM, 1 GB is the storage you'd put in a "Super Phone?" Try a minimum of 16gb, or by the time this actually comes out, closer to 32gb. Unless this thing will accept compact flash or SD cards, HD content won't do much good with only 1gb or storage.
I think maybe 16 GB might be a bit much, I mean the iPhone has that much because it's a music device. But I do agree a paltry 1 GB is ridiculously small. I was surprised the Bold and Storm has just 1 GB, I figured at least 4 GB! As the price continues to fall, one would expect the size of a "super phone" in the next couple of years would have more than the small amount of memory in current or "when the crap will this land" smartphones. But yes, 1 GB is a joke.
The Storm first-gen already accepts MicroSDHC up to 16GB now; probably 32GB with an update (once both the card and the phone are available). It is in fact bundled with an 8GB card installed (so that's 9GB right out of the box).
And how many HUNDREDS of dollars is a 32GB card? I'm sorry but thats pathetic you need to buy the phone and then spend just as much on storage for it.
I believe the 1 GB is system memory, not storage space. I think some of you guys need to read a bit more closely.
I smell Zuneberry's!
Wow...I sure do hope that the Storm successor will also support the cut, copy and paste feature since I believe that every phone should have that kind of capability -the capability that most people need- to survive and winning the market.
Haha.. well thanks for letting everyone know how little you know about the market. Here's an assignment for you: Tell me why the iPhone is dominating EVERY other phone one-by-one WITHOUT those, needed to survive, features?
In that case, here is an assignment for you:
Tell me why Apple only has 0.03% of the cell phone market share and Nokia actually has 57.55%?
That is world wide, if you just want to talk about North America then it changes to Apple=0.02% RIM=3.13% and Nokia=20.35%.
Before you start arguing that you we are only talking about smart phones, remember that Nokia makes smart phones too. However, I will go to a specific model level for you too. Apple iPhone=0.02% BlackBerry Bold 9000=0.04% (Not even released in the US yet) BlackBerry Pearl 8100=1.28% and Nokia N73=0.91% (Keep in mind that Nokia really doesn't offer phones running the Symbian OS here in the US and it still beats the pants off the iPhone in sales)
So much for the iPhone World Domination Tour.
Quit being such a hopeless iFanboy.
Deet... deet... deet deet... deet... deet
THIS JUST IN (from the best reporting team on television):
Apparently, Microsoft is working on a followup to Windows Mobile 6.1. Also, in related news, Motorola is working on a follow-on to the RAZR that will utilitize new and expanded technologies in an attempt to appeal to a new generation of users. In similar news, Apple is working on a follow on to the iPhone 3G that insiders have said is "amazing". And ASUS is apparently hard at work on follow-ons to all its products. As are all the other manufacturers. Except Toshiba.
1gb is the system memory, it comes with 8gb mini sd card!! you need to read more closely instead of the i think it should be a 4gb minimum crap ya be posting
Please stop beginning entire sentences, paragraphs and even THOUGHTS, with the word "So". It shows a huge lack of education and laziness.
i cannot wait to punch you in the face.
Now, if they would only release phones on a timely manner...
I have 6 users at my company waiting for the Bold. C'mon RIM/AT&T, release the freakin' phone already!!!1
A "huge lack of education and laziness"?
@ GETYOID
Yeah, I agree with those who are saying 1GB of storage is pretty lame for a so-called "super-phone." BUT...
The BGR page says it will have 1GB of RAM!!!!! Not memory as in hard drives and SD cards, memory as in RAM!!!! That's random-access memory!
