Sony has a PS3 controller charger, let us show you it
Even with today's wireless video game controllers, you can't stay untethered forever. After a few hours of gaming on the PlayStation 3, you'll have to plug in that SIXAXIS or DualShock 3 USB cable to charge. Starting December 18th, Sony Japan will offer an AC adapter intended for PS3 controllers at a price of ¥2,800 (just under $30). Like third party solutions we've seen, it has two USB ports so you'll be able to do two controllers or toss in a Bluetooth headset. Nothing yet on availability outside of Japan, but if we get word we'll be all over it, 'cause we feel slightly guilty for leaving the PS3 on overnight to charge -- what with the world's dwindling energy supply and all.

lmao I was thinking the same thing. Is he a new editor or has he always been here?
Stiv @ Oct 10th 2008 8:40AM
It was obviously intentional. Made me laugh. Well done, editor!

@Stiv I'm not an English native speaker. Could you please enlighten what the pun is?

It's called a meme, guys...
Andy @ Oct 10th 2008 7:10AM
Can't you use any USB charger already?
Xlar @ Oct 10th 2008 7:24AM
I use my RAZR's phone charger whenever I'm not playing and I've never had to charge it when I'm playing.
blizz419 @ Oct 10th 2008 7:32AM
Xlar, if your seriously charging it whenever your not playing your charging it way to much and you are gonna kill the battery, you need to let rechargeable batteries die, or close to it before charging it as often as possible, or your gonna build up the battery's memopry and it wont hold as much of a charge and the battery's life will wont be anywere near as long as it should be
jared @ Oct 10th 2008 7:43AM
Andy: I use a $0.99 cent charger to charge mine just fine, and have never had any issues with it.
Blizz: Also, I thought lithium ion batteries did not have the same memory issues that NiMH batteries did, and you didn't have to worry about letting them fully discharge before re-charging.
blizz419 @ Oct 10th 2008 8:08AM
hmm not sure that maybe be true Jared to an extent anyway, i'll have to look into, but still see charging as constantly as he does could only have a negative impact on the batteries maybe just not as severe
John B @ Oct 10th 2008 8:17AM
I just use my PC. The USB cable for my MP3 player works perfectly.
John B @ Oct 10th 2008 8:19AM
Damn it, Blizz! Let's review this again...
Your != You're (You are)
CosterMonger @ Oct 10th 2008 9:59AM
that extra long USB A to Mini B 5-Pin cord that comes with the PS3 HDMI combo pack works pretty good when you forget to charge your controller. (though it could of been a tad cheaper)
zack @ Oct 10th 2008 1:19PM
Wow...the 'new' comment system is starting to have an effect on me - I totally missed Blizz's post until someone (I'm too lazy to look back up) corrected his grammar with the whole "Your != You're" thing (which I second, that stuff bugs me too :P )
Though I'm not sure what's worse, the fact that I'm commenting with something so unrelated to the post, or that this is so relatively unnewsworthy (I make up words...shuddup!) that this is all I have to say :-\
Anydoodle (oooh there's another one!), carry on with YOUR day :P
(Too much caffeine, I apologize)
Wwhat @ Oct 11th 2008 7:31AM
If you simply get a powered USB hub it would also supply power if your computer is off, you'll have a hub plus a free charger.
J. Evans Turner @ Oct 12th 2008 8:43AM
CosterMonger:
That's actually a licensed product from BD&A, not an official Sony product. BD&A make licesnsed products with package designs that deliberately dupe people into thinking it's a first-party product.
I hate them.
Ed @ Oct 10th 2008 7:11AM
Instead of leaving the PS3 on just to charge the controllers, I tend to just plug them into my MacBook or iPhone wall charger.
Conversely, if my iPhone battery is dead I sometimes plug it into the PS3 if it's on.
I've never had any problems and I won't be needing this slightly clunky looking adapter!
Ebzy @ Oct 10th 2008 8:18AM
My thoughts too
Why is this more expensive then any other say 4-port generic powered USB Hub?
Ignatius @ Oct 10th 2008 1:28PM
Obviously you haven't seen who branded it and what it's 'intended' use is.
Max M. @ Oct 10th 2008 7:11AM
You don't have to feel bad about leaving your PS3 on, as long as your folding ;). Interesting though, wouldn't pay $30 for it.
Brian @ Oct 10th 2008 9:35AM
My thoughts exactly, as long as my PS3 is "folding", my conscience is clear about my PS3 being a power hog all night. Think of it as carbon-credit.
GenBanks @ Oct 10th 2008 7:25AM
I already have enough clutter in my room... do not need more wires, plugs, usb thingies chargers etc!
Niels R. @ Oct 10th 2008 7:31AM
Just plug your controller(s) into your lovely torrent-downloading-box :)
My Shuttle sits near my couch and a longer USB cable is way cheaper than $30!
ipubs bastard child @ Oct 10th 2008 7:40AM
I dont have a ps3.. cant you plug it into the erm.. ps3 itself? like on the xbox.. ?
Biomech @ Oct 10th 2008 8:00AM
Err yes, how do you think people have been charging it for all these years...
ben @ Oct 10th 2008 8:09AM
Shit... i thought the damn things were disposable.
nxp3 @ Oct 10th 2008 8:09AM
That's too expensive for a usb charger. Get the pelican charging stand. It'll dock your controllers, 2 of them, and it has two additional usb ports for whatever else you need like a headset...or the new keypad when it comes out. Same price.
lawrra @ Oct 10th 2008 1:28PM
I thought the whole point of this charger was so you could play while the controller is charging... Using another dock might, it just might, defeat the purpose here.
Darkfire @ Oct 10th 2008 8:15AM
"After a few hours of gaming on the PlayStation 3, you'll have to plug in that SIXAXIS or DualShock 3 USB cable to charge."
More like 18 or so hours. I've played an entire day on one charge for sure. I've left it on overnight, woke up and it was still half battery. The battery last a long time in my use.
SteeleWeiner @ Oct 10th 2008 10:47PM
Yeah i generally get a few days of gaming out of my controller
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Oct 10th 2008 1:59PM
God I'd hope so. I haven't used a PS3 much and rarely play my own XBox 360, but my play 'n charge 360 controllers last virtually forever. If one dies I just grab another and use that one until they're all dead. I only charge the controllers once every few months.
Jash Sayani @ Oct 10th 2008 8:36AM
Just a mini-USB port. Even my O2 XdaII mini charger can work with this! Nothing great to show!!!
MichaelLC @ Oct 10th 2008 8:49AM
I use my Comcast box to charge, since it's always on. Guess that's the curse of non-propritary devices. We don't have to buy OEM equipment to run/charge them.
Which, btw, "thank you, Sony!" I really do appreciate them making it mini-USB and Bluetooth.
And as Darkfire said, it's not "a few hours," Samuel. I get 18+ out of one full charge.
Bjsfreaked @ Oct 10th 2008 9:29AM
I think the guy obviously doesn't own a ps3.
Although saying that - has anyone noticed you get a longer charge from the new joypad to the original one with the box?
original one lasted ages but the one with the rumble pack last a few more hours.
EndHaiku @ Oct 12th 2008 9:37PM
I have two USB-to-Mini USB plugged into the USB ports on my TiVO HD to do the same thing. It's great for interchangeably charge PS3 controllers, some of my phone and my PND. I figure with your Comcast box, you're charging AND making it useful for something at the same time. ;)
ZaxCG2 @ Oct 10th 2008 9:02AM
Thanks for yet another attempt to rip us off Sony! :D
Ntw1103 @ Oct 10th 2008 9:06AM
This thing looks great. I don't have a ps3, but I really like the psp charger, and this looks similar, but with usb. Earlier today I was debating modding another power supply because I don't have enough usb chargers. too bad it is so far away... oh well. back to the modding I go...
Dmitri @ Oct 10th 2008 9:10AM
wtf? I didn't realize you have to leave your ps3 on to charge the controllers....360 charges them in while it is turned on, didn't realize sony was so stupid to make it that way.
Bjsfreaked @ Oct 10th 2008 9:23AM
your confusing with your comment.
You don't have to have your ps3 on to chrage the controllers. You can have it on and charge it through the machine or other ways like mini usb cables.
Morac @ Oct 10th 2008 9:22AM
I get more than "a few hours" off a fully charged DualShock 3. It's at least 10 hours.
As for charging it, I use my Wii. Blasphemous maybe, but it works.
Bjsfreaked @ Oct 10th 2008 9:24AM
I charge mine through a little dual controller holder from madcatz on the side of my ps3 which cost me like £7 and its good for me.
Why waste money buying another thing when there so many cheaper versions on the market.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Oct 10th 2008 9:26AM
Does this, like other Sony PS3 products, come without a USB cable (in this case without two of them)?
htd @ Oct 10th 2008 9:30AM
I have three USB charger with mini-usb connector, one from my htc touch cell phone, one from a mp4 player, one from a psp battery charger, also I can use my garmin car charger if I need to charge something in the car with mini-usb... I am glad more things are using this outlet... I really dont need another charger like that, especially when it's THIS expensive.
Derek @ Oct 10th 2008 9:50AM
I just use one of the many cables I have collected for PC Device use and plug the controllers into my PC's usb slots.
Spence @ Oct 10th 2008 10:04AM
The USB in my DirecTv DVR is always hott! MAkes a great charging machine....
Nomi @ Oct 10th 2008 10:20AM
Why don't they just release a dock that charges controllers and that new bluetooth headset coming out?
Gokie @ Oct 10th 2008 10:34AM
The inability to charge while the system is on standby is such a stupid design decision that I'm still baffled by it. Unless they wanted to push $30 worthless accessories in the first place.
Jeff @ Oct 10th 2008 2:42PM
Not sure you're really comprehending the concept of "standby"...
